Unfinished Business #2

Face in the Frame

Rate this book
Private investigator and ex-policeman Brodie Macbride's business is unfinished business, getting justice for those denied it legally.
Homeless people are disappearing in Glasgow. When one homeless man just prior to his disappearance tells Brodie that the devil wants his face his suspicions immediately land on Lucas Thorne, an artist who is in the city with his Face in the Frame exhibition, displaying frighteningly realistic faces he claims to have sculpted himself.
Brodie sends in Cass, his second-in-command and long time secret crush to scope Lucas out. However, to Brodie's chagrin, she falls for the charming artist and the two begin a relationship. Brodie becomes more frustrated when homeless people continue to disappear and no one will believe his wild theory.
Brodie also has to contend with trouble in the form of the McVays, the most powerful criminal family in Glasgow. They're about to go to war with a renegade section of the family and Toni, the great McVay matriarch, insists on dragging him into the fight.
While fending off unwanted attentions from a group of psychotic gangsters, Brodie goes on a one-man crusade to reveal the truth about Lucas Thorne, a truth that could potentially put his beloved Cass in great danger.

Contains violence and strong language.

Author of over seventy books so far. Living on the beautiful west coast of Scotland with my husband, twin daughters and a cat called Mavis, although I am originally from Lancashire in the north of England.

My tastes in all things are eclectic, which extends to my writing. Although I primarily write crime books - especially gangland thrillers - I also write gothic historical romance and fantasy. I publish on Amazon Kindle and some of my novels are available in paperback too. I also have a traditional publishing contract with Boldwood Books.

When I'm not writing - which isn't very often - I enjoy reading Daphne Du Maurier, Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson, MR James and the Brontes, among many others. I also enjoy swimming, walking and spending time with my family.

Fantastically Braw!

Scottish Noir laced with a fair amount of the Glesga Banter, what more could a Glasgow girl who loves a gritty psychological crime thriller want? I'm sure those not from the area may struggle with some of the unique language but don't let that put you off. As I discovered from a Welsh friend who gave up on trying to do just that, instead he drew his own conclusions as to what some of the Glaswegian words meant and we both found that although sometimes he got it completely wrong, his version of translation was just as hysterical as the real thing. So bare that in mind and don't be put off, failing that just google it lol.

This is the second book in the series and I made the mistake of thinking that as I had just finished book 1 and loved it, that I would just read a chapter and as it was 3.30am, then settle down for sleep. Hah!! I tried. I attempted sleep a few times and finally gave in. The plot for this book had me totally hooked.

"The Heids" (the heads) as our unlikely hero and lovable rouge Brodie, affectionately called them and the whole idea of an artist who skins the faces from his victims and displays them as unique animatronic works of art, to the unsuspecting public was just genius. The author paints a vivid picture of the exhibition and I couldn't help but visualise the temple in Game of Thrones with the many faces of the faceless.

Bravo Heather, finding a unique story line is increasingly hard in this genre. The same goes for the charachters, Brodie and his side kick and secret love Cass are refreshingly brilliant charachters. The story hooks you from the start and I found it impossible to put down. The pace continued throughout steadily building with not just a crazy and creepy serial killer, but the awesome and fantastic added bonus of Toni, the Grand Dame of Glesga Gangsters. Both plots running side by side just added to the tension and intrigue, not to mention the laugh out loud patter between the charachters.

So glad I stumbled across this series, love it and moving swiftly on to book 3. X
