Catch as Cat Can is definitely a four paws and tail up novel! Shadow brings an air of mystery and delight to his person, Sunny, and to Kittery Harbor. He is the epitome of a cat who owns his person! Sunny is a sleuth extraordinaire and has a close relationship with Will, the Chief Inspector for their little town. In the cold of winter, Sunny’s boss Ollie, who owns the neighboring storefront, asks her to check with Neil Garret from the seafood shop and collect the rent he is late to pay. Neil has regularly given tidbits of fish to Shadow whenever the sweet little beggar had opportunity to cast pleading eyes to the fishmonger.
Sunny, who usually brought her cheerful personality to each person she met, couldn’t cheer Neil up, however. When she heard the gate going up to Neil’s shop one morning and went to meet him, the first thing they noticed was how cold the shop was. Neil walked part of the way through the shop, he opened the custom-made walk-in freezer and saw a dead man lying in frozen blood. He and Sunny spent much longer with the local police that day than either wanted to. Sunny’s natural curiosity and Shadow’s natural desire to keep a food source nearby, send them into a vortex of mayhem and more murder that they didn’t see coming. We see why, with Shadow, that cats need nine lives! Even if he is trying to protect his primary food source, he does love Sunny.
While there is a handful of mystery series with a cat in a role almost equivalent that of its primary person, Shadow’s role is almost greater than Sunny’s, with whom he shares top billing. He is a cat with a memory for his own past and an ever-evolving attachment to Sunny, all the while retaining his right to kitty-cat around the town to solve his own curiosity. I enjoy reading the portions from Shadow’s point of view, including his nicknames for people!
Sunny and her father Mike are both very well-defined, not only by their conversations and actions but by their thoughts that are shown. Ollie, Sunny’s boss, and Will, her boyfriend, are defined as needed for their roles, as is Helena, Mike’s lady friend and neighbor. The peripheral characters are described only as needed for their more limited roles.
The author has a gift for plotting and writing cozy mysteries, and offers us another delightfully riveting read. Descriptions of the setting are so well written that one can almost feel the bite of the wind and snow! It is a rich toboggan ride of humor and suspense that could almost give a cat-about-town grey whiskers. When Will’s old ‘friend’ Val, a US Marshall, came to town and began riding around town with him, and the dead man in Neil’s freezer had no ID of any kind, things were strange indeed. Just when it seems the reader knows who the bad guy/ gal is, another plot twist occurs and the reader changes direction along with Sunny and Shadow. I highly recommend Catch as Cat Can for older teens and adults of any age who enjoy their cozy mysteries with humor and with nail-biting moments, cats, and a bit of romance.

Shadow's and Sunny's adventures always keep me entrain. This book did not disappoint. Shadow is an escape artist when wants to do something. He has found a new fish store, next to Sunny's office It is irresistible and he often manages to find his way to the store. On day while waiting for it to open, Someone grabs him by his neck and he is in grave danger of losing his life. The tale takes twist at this point we have federal marshals in town to protect an important witness. The Russian mob is involved, there is gun running incident and smuggling to maintain your interest. Yes, Shadow plays a significant role in the action. Sunny and Will Price affair continues and he is now a homicide detective for the sheriff's office. I am already looking forward to their next escapade.

Another enjoyable tale from author Claire Donally.
Fans of kitty cozies are really going to like the Sunny & Shadow Mysteries. Not only does the series follow protagonist Sunny, readers also get to hear cat Shadow’s thoughts on things. It’s a fun twist for a series to let us in on what the pet is thinking.
CATCH AS CAT CAN is another delightful installment to the Sunny & Shadow series. With a well written and thoughts out plot, I second guessed myself a couple of times before I made it to the reveal. (I was still wrong)

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Claire Donally’s Sunny and Shadow Mystery series until I picked up book 5 series, Catch as Cat Can. Shadow is a great snarky counterpoint to even keeled Sunny. There is a great deal of humor in Shadow’s thoughts about the behavior of all the two legs in his life. This mystery involves witness protection, gangsters, loan sharking, and more in the small fishing village in Maine. Mike, Sunny’s Dad, is still a recurring presence in Sunny’s life and the series, along with her boss, Ollie, and boyfriend, Will. A great cozy, particularly for cat lovers!

The author does a great job with Shadow's perspective and she has wonderful character development. Each book in the series is equally as satisfying.

Loved this latest novel in the series! Sunny is a great pet owner, as is her dad (in spite of his mumbling). I admire Sunny for returning home to help her dad, and Chief Inspector Will Price for his dedication to his job and loyalty to Sunny and her family - both two and four legged.
What I probably enjoy the most is seeing Shadow's perspective, as a cat who gets involved in every mystery and does what he can to help his 'two-legged' best gal. This author has watched and 'listened' to cats long enough to have insight into their behaviors.
The mystery is intriguing, and I appreciate Sunny's willingness to help her new neighbor - could it be due in part to her kind heart as well as Shadow's love of seafood scraps that Neil Garrett shares? In any event, in spite of learning about Neil's past, Sunny continues to look for the best in him and wants to help him.
The ending was satisfactory - even though I couldn't solve the mystery without the help of Sunny, Will and Shadow...so it is time to let the 'go-fast' sit in the carport and await the next novel in the series...hopefully soon!

Some series I buy 'cuz I just happen to love the characters. The Sunny and Shadow series by Claire Donally is one such series.
We finished Catch as Cat Can a few days ago and I want to review it here. Shadow adopts Sunny when she returns to her small Maine home town to care for her father after a heart attack. At first I did not like Sunny's dad 'cuz he was really mean to Shadow but they now have an amicable relationship.
Shadow is smitten with Sunny and she with him. I love the way the author tells the story from her point of view and from Shadow's. Of course, his point of view is the right one, even when it is not. He's the cat after all.
Dead bodies pile up around Sunny and she cannot resist the chance to help her boyfurriend, a local cop, solve the murders. This time the murder is downright fishy as a Federal Marshall arrives on the scene and it is clear this is not business as usual.
As always, it is a fast paced and entertaining read. With Shadow's help, Sunny unravels the mystery and the guilty pawty is arrested.
If mew are a fan of cat mysteries, as I am, mew will adore these books. I give it five purrs and two paws up.

Feel let down
The mystery itself was good. And it's Shadow that kept me going. I love cat's and I thought the part's in his point of view were amusing. However, the main character irritated me. There was a moment in the book where she made it very clear that she felt she was entitled to information that her boyfriend, a cop, had. However, if he had shared this information, a) someone's life would have been endangered, b) he would have been putting someone's life at risk, could have lost his job, never worked in law-enforcement again, etc. and c) put her own life in danger and that of the people she loves. And yet, she was furious with him for not telling her. I lost so much respect for her at that moment. And it's not a huge deal, but the author repeatedly uses a few phrases that make her sound rude and disrespectful (but most of the time didn't even apply.) Sentence endings after she's had inner dialogue, like, "she thought with her irripresible reporters instinct." Or, "that irreverant side of her added." And, "she added with her irrepresable smart-alec side." Those are not direct quotes because I can't remember the exact wording, but those words, were used. And this is actually in every book. It's extremely repetitive and so gets annoying after a while. Especially in the instances where it really wasn't a bad or dis-respectful thought that she had. But in the end, it makes her feel like an unlikeable character.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries, I definitely recommend this one.
I discovered "cozy mysteries" about 10-12 years ago. Didn't know that was a genre, until one (maybe?) turned up in my Amazon recommendations after buying a bunch of nonfiction books about cats and dogs.
Anyway, I'd always loved Agatha Christie when I was a kid/teen, so I read the first, then another, then suddenly my new "guilty pleasure" was reading cozy mysteries featuring cats in the plot.
The Sunny and Shadow mystery series came later. I read the first in 2012-13-14 era. Have read all except 1, that I can tell. Very enjoyable.
I save the Cozy Mysteries, which I call Cozy Cat books, for times when I want to chill out and just read for total pleasure.

Tasked with the job of reminding Ollie Barnstable's tenant about his overdue rent, Sunny is shocked to go next door and find him in shock, the back door to his fish business open, and a dead body in his freezer. The body has no ID, doesn't seem to be from around the area, and was shot in the back. Sunny gets pulled into the case when her cat hitches a ride to town, almost gets taken, and escapes over to the fish store for handouts. Believing her neighbor and boss' tenant to be innocent, she tries to track down who really killed the person in his freezer. Her father's lady Mrs. Martinson's daughter comes for a visit and provides a great clue to the case. Then the storm-of-the-century hits and everything is put on hold, someone else is killed, and things become more confusing and tangled. Now firmly determined to find the culprit Sunny and Will follow leads and share information until the unpleasant but surprising conclusion featuring the heroic efforts of Sunny's guys.

I like this series and enjoyed this book. A dead body is discovered in the freezer of the seafood shop next door to Sunny's office; she goes to collect the rent for her boss and is present. She and Will work together and solve the crime. There are many twists and turns and a new character, Mrs. M's daughter from California.

A new fish store opens in Kittery Harbor. Sunny is glad for the business, and Shadow is glad for the treats. Then a man is found dead in the freezer of the store. Who was he and why was he here? Who killed him and why? Sunny and her boyfriend, police detective Will Price, are on the case. A fun read with interesting characters and a quirky town.

Definitely read the earlier books in the series first, but if you have, this one will entertain you. Some old characters return, some new ones show up, and two murders I thought would end up being unconnected (and that would be the twist) actually relate in a surprising and satisfying way. And Shadow gets to be a hero while remaining an entirely realistic and loveable cat.

Another wonderful installment in the series - and I'm just bummed because I can't find a book #6. Sunny, Will, and the gang are at it again. Shadow is his usual darling self and contributes to saving the day once more. I'm going to pass these books on to my library, but I will long remember and still love this series!

Good but not as much as earlier books in the series. Seemed to drag a bit. Also some puzzling issues with characters. Ollie was an old curmudgeon in previous books, but now he's an attractive guy? Why is Sunny dating Will when they rarely see each other and when they do it's 100% focus on various crimes.

This is the 5th in series and my favorite of the series. Shadow has a scary catnapping to start off and Sunny is on the case. This is a complex mystery of mob ties, revenge and danger. I love the crime fighting duo and how Sunny communicates with Shadow. This series is pure catnip for cozy cat fans. I look forward to the next in series.

This is the fifth and last book in the series but it leaves so many questions opened. The book didn’t disappoint and was an enjoyable read. I feel the writing has been better as the series continues. I just wish there were a few more murders to be solved and finish the relationship of Sunny and Will, and Mike and Helena.

This was interesting book and hard to put down especially with everything happening quickly. We get a small look at witness protection, fish industry, and her father's girlfriend whose daughter comes home for a week. Shadow is interesting as well and you can tell this author has cats.

Using a bad guy from the witness protection program with marshals popping in and out made an interesting story. I had to wait on a list to get it from the library a second time.

I read this book in basically one day-it was great!! I've read all 5 books in less then 3 weeks, I can't wait till the next book comes out - keep them coming!

I love Sunny and Shadow and especially how Shadow refers to the "two legs". The plot kept me interested so I read it quickly. I hope there will be many more in the series.

What can I say? Every once in a while I succumb to a cozy, especially considering what else is in my reading pile.

I've loved every novel of this series! The "Fantastic Fiction" website shares that, "Claire Donally is a pseudonym for the author of many other critically acclaimed cozy mysteries." As the 5th novel was published in 2016, I'm afraid the author and/or the publisher has decided not to continue the series which makes me quite sad.
There are many cozy mysteries that feature a cat(s) as a pet(s) and/or as an assistant(s) to the amateur sleuth(s) in the series but none of the cats speak directly to the audience as in the delight of hearing Shadow's direct commentary. I'm going to miss this little fur face. Shadow had quite a rough life before living with Sunny Coolidge and her father. As Shadow has relaxed "at home" he's been able to become even more adventurous since his days and nights are no longer spent foraging for food or looking for a safe space to nap or sleep.
Each novel in the series can be enjoyed as a stand-alone but part of the true charm of the series is reading of the ever evolving relationships of Shadow and all the individuals and furry faces that Shadow meets through living with (and sometimes following) Sunny. For some purr-fect entertainment, be sure to add this series to your to-read list.
