Born Dhanpat Rai, he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to "Premchand", while he is also known as "Munshi Premchand", Munshi being an honorary prefix. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists") by some Hindi writers. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi.
Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.
Several of his early works, such as A Little Trick and A Moral Victory, satirised the Indians who cooperated with the British colonial government.
In the 1920s, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and the accompanying struggle for social reform. During this period, his works dealt with the social issues such as poverty, zamindari exploitation (Premashram, 1922), dowry system (Nirmala, 1925), educational reform and political oppression (Karmabhumi, 1931).
In his last days, he focused on village life as a stage for complex drama, as seen in his most famous work Godan as well as the short-story collection Kafan (1936).Premchand believed that social realism was the way for Hindi literature, as opposed to the "feminine quality", tenderness and emotion of the contemporary Bengali literature.

यकीन नहीं होता, सच्चाई के इतने करीब है ये कहानियाँ.

"क्या बात है!" प्रेमचंद जी की इन मर्मस्पर्शी, हृदय को छू जानेवाली कहानियों को पढ़कर यही अल्फ़ाज़ मुंह से निकलते हैं।
मानसरोवर नाम सुनकर मास्तिष्क में सिर्फ दो ही चीज़ें आती है, और वे दोनों ही मन प्रफुल्लित कर देती हैं - मानसरोवर झील व प्रेमचंद जी का यह अद्भुत कहानी संग्रह!
मैं तो कहती हूं कि जिसने हिंदी भाषा का ज्ञान रखते हुए भी इनकी लेखनी का चस्का नहीं लगाया, उसका जीवन ही निरर्थक है!
क्या कह सकते हैं उस महान लेखक के विषय में जिनकी लेखनी व भाषा जिस स्तर पर हैं, उस स्तर पर पहुंचने का खयाल भी हम जैसे तुच्छ मनुष्यों के लिए पहाड़ तोड़ने से भी अधिक कठिन है? क्या टिप्पणी हो सकती है उनकी, जिनकी स्याही का एक भी कण कभी व्यर्थ गया ही न हो? अरे, ऐसे महापुरुषों के चरणों की धूल की बराबरी भी हम नहीं कर सकते!
बस इस महान व्यक्ति का शत बार नमन ही किया जा सकता है। और वही मै करती हूं। 🙏🙏🙏

Premchand is at its best. I have read both mansarovar 1 and 2. These book are collections of short stories. All stories are work of fiction but gives great insight in the village life of contemporary india in which premchand lived. Some stories shows good side of the village setup whiles others shows dark side of the village life. Stories takes into account various problems faced by the people on those days. Most stories gives moral message at the end. Premchand has very well thought style of writing where he raises many important social issues of his time in humorous and some time in sad way. Every story has different way of writing. In these two books reader may find 8-9 different style of writing as it may seem as stories are from different writer. Premchand gives minute details of main character and other minor characters are left to the imagination of reader. Many stories are ended in a such way that it gives reader much food for thought. Mansarovar can be best enjoyed if reader pauses for sometime after each story and tries to think about character and the message story gives. I started with casual reading but after few stories I realise stories have much deeper meaning in them.
Here I share some of my favorite lines from Mansarovar-2
One about Adulthood:
"जवानी जोश है, बल है, दया है, साहस है, आत्म-विश्वास है, गौरव है और सब कुछ जो जीवन को पवित्र, उज्ज्वल और पूर्ण बना देता है।
जवानी का नशा घमंड है, निर्दयता है, स्वार्थ है, शेखी है, विषय-वासना है, कटुता है और वह सब कुछ जो जीवन को पशूता, विकार और पतन की ओर ले जाता है।"
One about Parenting:
मैंने अपनी चोरी की पूरी कहानी कह डाली। बच्चों के साथ समझदार बच्चे बनकर माँ-बाप उन पर जितना प्रभाव डाल सकते हैं, जितनी शिक्षा दे सकते हैं, उतने बूढ़े बनकर नहीं।
One about Child psyche:
बालकों का मन कितना कोमल होता है, इसका अनुमान दूसरा नहीं कर सकता। उनमें भावों को ज़ाहिर करने के लिए शब्द नहीं होते। उन्हें यह भी ज्ञात नहीं होता कि कौन सी बात उन्हें विकल कर रही है, कौन सा काँटा उनके दिल में खटक रहा है, क्यों बार-बार रोना आता है, क्यों वे हृदय मारे बैठे रहते हैं, क्यों खेलने में मन नहीं लगता? मेरी भी यही दशा थी। कभी घर में आता, कभी बाहर जाता, कभी सड़क पर जा पहुँचता। आँखें कजाकी को तलाश कर रहीं थीं। वह कहाँ चला गया? कहीं भाग तो नहीं गया?
One about old age:
परंतु बुढ़ापा तृष्णा-रोग का अंतिम समय है, जब सम्पूर्ण इच्छाएँ एक ही केंद्र पर आ लगती हैं। बूढ़ी काकी में यह केंद्र उनकी स्वादेन्द्रिय थीं।
One about Casteism and hypocrisy:
ब्राह्मण-ठाकुर थोड़े ही थी कि नाक कट जाएगी। यह तो ऊँची जातों में होता है कि घर में चाहे जो कुछ करो, बाहर पर्दा ढँका रहे। वह तो संसार को दिखाकर दूसरा घर कर सकती है। फिर वह रग्घू की दबैल बनकर क्यों रहे?

The stories written by Premchand depict the reality of life. It presents a canvas of our social realities, human aspirations and human values. These stories although written in a different era but still even today truly reflect our society. It's no wonder that our country is still grappling with same issues of women empowerment, caste based distinctions, inequality between rich and poor etc. which are elaborated in detail in the works of Premchand written almost a century back.
This is a collection of stories. Most of the stories depict the true realties of our society and are easy to read and understand. I felt some stories we're abruptly ended and left to the judgement of readers to justify their ends. Some are so abruptly ended that it gave me a sense of disappointment as I couldn't derive any sense out of it. Still, it's a good read and some stories are very good.

प्रेमचंद जी की कहानी अपने अंदर बहुत कुछ समेंटे हुए हैं। पन्ना -2 ऐसा लगता है जैसे न जाने कितने गोते खा कर लिखा होगा। ज़रूर पढ़िये।

Missing your village? Here's the perfect book to take you there. This includes some of Premchand's popular short stories like ईदगाह, बेटों वाली विधवा, etc. The ones that are not so popular are equally good and some might even surprise you with the topic it highlights or the narration technique it uses. So, yes, this book is definitely worth your time. Do give it a read.

Another gem of collection of short stories fro the great Premchand. Quite realistic short stories and not all stories have happy ending, which makes the stories quite realistic.
