The stunning conclusion to the Portal Wars trilogy…

Jake Taylor and his cyborg soldiers have fought their way from one Portal planet to another, moving steadily homeward with one thought in mind. The utter destruction of the corrupt rulers who sent them to hell to fight and die as pawns in a dishonest war, one started not by the alien enemy, but by Earth’s own UNGov, as a tool in it plot to seize total power.

And now, after the fighting, the suffering, the bitter losses…finally, it is time. Time for the final invasion of Earth. Time to liberate their homeland from the totalitarian government that controls it utterly, to find those responsible for all that has happened…and to kill them all.

Jake and his warriors are hopelessly outnumbered, but they are determined to battle to the last, to sacrifice all for any hope of victory, however small. But Taylor and his soldiers are not alone in their fight, for in Earth’s shadows, in the rotting slums and the remote countryside, in dark corners and crumbling cellars, a spark of defiance has survived and grown, men and women who remember liberty, and are willing to die for the chance to regain what they lost a generation before. They are preparing…and waiting. Waiting for the chance to strike a blow for freedom.

But those who cling to power will not give it up easily. Indeed, the politicians who run UNGov will see Earth a charred ruin, the dead lying in unburied heaps before they will yield their positions. The battle is about to begin…and it cannot end until only one side remains.

Is Jake Taylor willing to go all the way, to fight to the end, do what he must...to accept nothing less than death or victory, whatever the cost?

I read the first to books in this series sometime ago and then kind of forgot about it. At that time, I knew there would be a third book, but there was no announcement of when, so I moved on. Then I found this third and not necessarily final book in the series. It is a very enjoyable read in that Jake Taylor accomplishes what he set out to do so long ago on Gehenna, the portal world where he was sent to die.

As you read in the first two books, Jake is now not a normal human in the sense that he has been surgically altered into a superhuman. He and about 10,000 of his fellow soldiers were subject to UNGov’s experiment to make them more lethal against the Machines, a.k.a. the Tegeri Then, Jake was captured by the Tejeri and told he truth. Their enemy for the last thirty-years wasn’t really their enemy at all. They were a peace-loving race of aliens who had come to Earth to make friends and share their advanced technology. UNGov saw this as a threat to their power so they started a vicious lie about the Machines and that started a terrible war.

UNGov is an oppressive government where most of the Earth’s people live in poor to very poor conditions while the political elite live in unthinkable luxury. They have rounded up all the dissidents and sent them through various Portal worlds to act as an army against the Machines. These people were lied to and many thousands have died for no reason. Jake Taylor has learned the truth and has spread that truth throughout the army on Gehenna. They now see Jake Taylor as their leader of the Army of Liberation (AOL).

Jake sent several of his key Generals to other portal worlds in hopes of convincing those armies to stop fighting and join his revolution. He intends to return to Earth and destroy UNGov. This book is about that struggle and its culmination.

The author does a lot of writing through the journals of the main characters. You will read where Jake talks about things that have happened and his regrets on they way they happened, but also the necessity. He is losing his friends in this struggle although they would do anything to help his cause. It’s frightening to realize that people do tend to believe what they are told by their government and few try to find out if it’s true or not. On this Earth, UNGov controls all the media so their message is the ONLY message that goes out to the population. That’s not much different on our Earth except we have the news media controlling what we see and hear and who knows what is true!

Ok, so even though Jake does what he set out to do, barely, there is a warning from the Tegeri about an unknown darkness that will soon be falling over this galaxy and it will take both the Tegeri and Humans to stand and defeat this terrible new enemy. That’s why the Tegeri first contacted humanity. They were in hopes of forming an alliance against the coming dark. It has taken them longer than they thought to get the humans to understand they are not the enemy and now that Jake Taylor is in charge, maybe the Tegeri and Humans have a chance. We’ll see in the next book.

This is the third (and currently last) of the Portal Wars saga. This review will cover all three books. The first volume begins on the planet Gehenna, an arid, desert world where conscripts from earth are fighting an enemy known as The Machines. The soldiers arrived on the globe through one of several portals on the planet. Little is known of the Portal system and humans are generally searching and finding them individually. Most lead to other planets, all overrun with the enemy Machines. When conscripted, the soldiers are never to be allowed to return to earth and will fight until their eventual death.

The government structure on earth is centralized in Geneva as a one-world governance. Of course, any situation such as this means that a group of elite people will rise to positions of power and rule. In this case, it is an evil government, quite similar to that of the novel 1984. The trilogy spends a great many pages in exposing the dangers of such a political system, though in no way slowing down the plot.

Back to the first volume—the hero of the tales, Sgt Jake Taylor, becomes aware of an unbelievably wicked plot against the people of earth and the armed forces. Taylor spends the next two volumes taking the fight to the true enemy—UNGov. There is an additional plot point that circles through the novels that will open up a second trilogy (or more) when the author has time for it. These future volumes, for me, are very much desired.

Overall these are marvelously plotted stories, with hints posted throughout the novels that do not become apparent until later in the books. Their are tremendous battles with hundreds of thousands of fighters, yet Allan keeps the stories focused, easily understood and thrilling to read.

Now I will move on to the current series that seems to be most important to Jay Allan at this time: Blood on the Stars. If these books give me as much pleasure as Portal Wars did, it will be time well spent.

OMG! Not a cliffhanger!!

So ends this trilogy. But is everything wrapped up in a neat package with a nice little bow on top? NO! It's not. No details, no spoilers from me though.

This is the kind of book that was hard to put down. New and unexpected allies are gained but we also lose old friends in the battle to regain control of the Earth. I hope the next book in the series is coming soon!

A fitting end to the Trilogy. Though the end (i know you are cueing up the next Triology) could have been better. The way its been setup in the epilogue leaves a lot to be desired. But everything before that is on par with what we expect from Taylor, his doubts and pain on what he is doing is just on mark.

This third installment in the Portal Wars trilogy was the best of all. Now I'm ready for the follow-on trilogy Portal Wars: The Darkness when it's available.

Good Story

Enjoyed the book. There were some typos. Interesting subject with the current political climate here in the US. I will have to look for the next trilogy.

Last book of the trilogy. Good romp, a little too touchy-feely in some parts but still worth the read.

More of the same

The main character is getting weirder. His introspection is supposed to show his depth of feeling and commitment to saving humanity at all cost. He hasn't been particularly concerned with rescuing The support personnel, including the women who are sex slaves for The armies. He's a real caring human being.

The armies are ridiculous in composition, size and have a mission that makes no sense.
There are not enough troops to make sense and no provision is made for everything from supply, transport, artillery and the thousands of other de facto slaves that are the human armies.

The author hasn't been trying too hard to create a plausible universe. The thinking and interactions among the alien factions seem weak. That fits into this story and the aliens still make more sense than the humans. He finished as he started, lazily.

I'm not sure why I expected more from Allan. I know that I read something worthwhile from Allan but can't remember what. I'll think twice before I read him again.

My Book Review Number 118:

This review is on Homefront, Portal Wars: Book III, by author Jay Allan. This is the third story in the series.

General Jake Taylor and his troops leave the last battlefield on an alien planet to return home to Earth using an undiscovered Portal in Siberia. Many have died in the struggle to fight the UN Government that has lied to its people and forced thousands of men and women to die on alien planets fighting the Tegeri Machines and now UNGov forces sent to stop Taylor. Taylor’s forces now number 60,000, but it may not be enough to win the battle on Earth.

The Tegeri are helping Taylor fight the UNGov forces by retreating on some planets and providing supplies to Taylor. The UNGov forces have been shattered by Taylor’s forces on other planets and many have now joined Taylor once they learned the truth about the war.

UNGov propaganda has created lies about what Taylor has done and caused many civilians to resist Taylor’s troops by attacking them. Taylor is sick of all the killing, but he is set upon seeking revenge for all that the UNGov leadership has done to him and others. He plans to fight to the death or until the government is overthrown.

In this story, we are introduced to some new characters who are fighting in the resistance on Earth. They learn of Taylor’s invasion and decide the time is right to overthrow the government. Unfortunately, the current Secretary-General of the UNGov, Samovich, is a ruthless dictator and will do anything to stop Taylor with devastating results.

The final battle between Taylor’s forces and the UNGov causes massive losses on both sides and the near destruction of Earth. It is never clear who will win the battle until the final moments of the story.

I give this book Five Stars because the story is well written with good action scenes and great characters. The struggles of Taylor to free Earth are heart wrenching and filled with emotions. The suspense builds until the very end. The secret that Taylor carries with him learned from the Tegeri will certainly provide more sequels to this story.

Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author.

A very good read

I really enjoyed this series. From the beginning he created good characters and developed them. The continuity thru the series made you want Taylor to live and win. They also left it open for the next story. I do wish they would proof read better. There are too many mistakes both in spelling and use of the wrong word.

Wonderful! The best author in his field ever! Never disappointed. The true greatness of any author is the deep understand of human condition and the ability to express it. It set Steven King as a man apart. It does not fail here either. And it takes one who has lived it and suffered to understand it. There is a greatness there too.

It took me a long time to finish this series. Jay Allan has had many different projects going and most of them are worthy reads. This one suffered a bit from a lack of editing. The overall story is good with an excellent balance of drama and action. It also brings the trilogy to a sound completion.

Narrated very badly by Liam Owan. Story may have been OK but narrator sounded like he was transcribing instructions on how to assemble a book shelf. 10 minutes is all I could take.
