After the death of Logan last year there was certainly quite a bit of debate over who would take up the cowl. Well, a successor has emerged, and it's one that didn't surprise anyone: Logan's clone/daughter Laura Kinney puts on the cowl in All-New Wolverine #1, and Taylor hits the ground running.
Probably the biggest fear fans had was that Taylor would forget everything that made Laura unique from Logan, and not only does Taylor reassure us that won't be the case right in the very first issue, there's a great flashback scene between Logan and Laura where he even addresses it directly. It's a wonderful little moment made even better by Lopez's artwork, who includes a neat little touch of Laura and Logan having many of the same facial ticks.
Taylor does an excellent job picking up on Laura's continuing development and evolution, and she's written better here than she has been in a LONG time (I'm looking at you especially, Bendis). He even manages to make her relationship with the time-displaced teenaged Angel enjoyable, with an adorably awkward moment that also helps demonstrate just how far she's come since her debut a decade ago.
If there's a weakness, it's that we don't get much context of what led up to this moment, but this can be forgiven both by the promise of more information to unfold in future issues. It also helps keep the action and story is nice and tight, which AGAIN comes as a welcome relief from Bendis's wheel-spinning dragging out plots interminably. The script and art keep the fights dynamic and fluid, and Lopez does a superb job depicting Laura's athleticism. The twist at the end may not catch the genre-savvy readers by surprise, but still puts a nice wrinkle in the story, while also serving as a nice callback to her origins.
All-New Wolverine hits the ground running. Ignore the haters: the Wolverine is back, and Laura is perfectly-suited to wearing the cowl.
