It is 1935 and a rubber plantation deep in the Amazon jungle is losing its labourers one by one. Company agent Miller arrives to investigate the mounting number of those disappearing as well as the brutal killing of a fellow agent.
Sightings of a corpselike girl and a man who bears a striking resemblance to the dead agent soon have Miller on edge. And when night falls, and the humid air fills with the stench of rotting flesh, he becomes convinced he's found the nearest thing to hell.
They roam through the darkness, hide in the shadows and shun the daylight. But what are these deathly-looking figures?
As the sun sets over the plantation Miller's terrifying nightmare is about to begin...
It was the front cover that drew me to this book and I'm glad I picked it up. Wonderfully descriptive and creepy, this is a new take on the traditional zombie story. I really liked the story and found the descriptions of the reanimated dead particularly satisfying. I still don't know what was in that cave though... But I'm not sure I want to know...
This book had a vibe of a 1950's horror so much so the images in my head were in black and white! You could feel the humidity coming off the pages due to the evocative writing. Whilst technically it is a zombie book it isn't in the modern sense so only read if you enjoy 1950 style zombie movies such as white zombie.
This was a fun atmospheric read. It does not read like a horror movie script. The zombies in this one were a lot less Hollywood and a lot more Voodoo in their presentation and that made this one stand out for me.
