4.5 Understanding Your Reality Stars

We all have our own reality. Yes, there are Society customs, rules and regulations...There are family obligations and then the oppressive drive to fit in...It is this "fitting in" which can be the biggest obstacle in our lives...
Because who are we trying to be? The one's we are "supposed to be" ...or the one's we are directed by advertising, social media and every other force out there "to want to be"...
Or have we finally come to terms with who we truly are.... The person who is finally able to feel emotions; to understand what is important and share themselves fully with another...knowing deep in their soul...
They Are Enough.
This book with its perfect, pretty, pink bow is surprisingly deceptive. Don't let the cover fool you in thinking this is a frothy, light romance of friends to lovers and "won't that be fun for a couple of hours' time..."
This is not a light weight story. It has wonderful light fun moments, for sure...But this takes on real life issues head on and handles them in a way which will make you sit up and take notice. I tell you this not to scare you off but to encourage you to dig in...because if you do, you will be highly rewarded.
The set up is not unusual; Emma, a perfectly lovely gal, is friends with Rarity and her brother Riley. All three of them share a loft in NYC. Emma works as a personal assistant for a top attorney in a huge law firm. She met Rarity - her BFF- while attending an upper-class, tony school. Emma's immediate family i.e. Mom and Dad are middle class but Grandmother had money. She left a scholarship for Emma to provide for her education, thus how she was in the fancy environment to meet her friend and brother. Since their first meeting, Rarity and Emma have been joined at the hip. Ryan has been friendly growing up but not really involved with Emma. The deal now is they all live together as roommates with Riley bartending at night... so he and Emma don't hang out at all. They just sort of pass in the hallways and say hey, every so often.
Rarity and Ryan are tight. They have been united practically from birth as a means to protect themselves from their horrific parents. People who use children as pawns and have no parenting genes to speak of. Both kids were raised by nannies and were expected to fit a certain mold. God forbid, they should have a mind of their own or wishes not to conform to the parental wishes...
Both kids have pushed back... the threat of trust funds which they are due have too many conditions tied to them...Both Ryan and Rarity have made their own way...with very little of a safety net...Both have worked through what they feel is important and seem to be centered.
Rarity has a professional career as a photographer; she has had her work published in Time Magazine and is commissioned regularly for all sorts of jobs. She is gay, has a wonderful partner she loves and the only weakness is she hasn't come out to her parents.
Riley is in a holding pattern. He is the fella you check out when he walks in the door... not because he is trying to be... but because he doesn't...He is extremely charming and although he has had his share of women, he never has had a relationship. Times were all kept as friendly hook ups. As to future... Riley has no five year plan... or even a one year plan right now. He knows there needs to be some sort of purpose... but right now... it is doing his thing.
We meet all of these character as Emma is entrenched in living out her childhood fantasy... planning her fairy tale wedding. Only for Emma, would Rarity put up with non stop wedding arrangement chatter. It is like torture to both Rarity and Riley. Emma is as girly girl as Rarity isn't. Emma is this female who has dreamed of the storybook wedding with all of the trimmings...and she is about to have the Gown she has picked delivered at the loft. The buzzer goes off just as Rarity was about to loose her mind over the discussion of the color Coral...Ugh...
Instead of receiving her gown...Emma was delivered something very different...Her fiance telling her he has been in love with a Goldie for sometime and is calling off the wedding. Emma is in shock...She is about to go through all of the stages of loss...Rarity takes her by the hand and leads her away. Riley has never seen anything like this and doesn't know what to do...
After six days of weeping, consuming Riley's personal ice cream stash and planting herself on the couch...Emma is no better. She has existed there...non-watching the TV, skipping showers and allowing her hair develop its own zipcode. Rarity has a big shoot and has to leave for a week. Riley is the only one who can stop Emma from doing something stupid, like texting or calling Becket. Rarity stresses to Riley to just be there for Emma and it should be ok.
Riley sees this woman, Rarity's friend and tries to stay out of her way. Emma seems to be sleeping with the TV on, so he thinks is would be safe to enjoy his one day off from the bar and slip out. As he grabs his keys, Emma calls out to him...and soon he is sitting on the couch holding her as she cries in his arms. Now this is something unusual...not only because he never had any contact with Emma that way... Rarity's friend and all... but because hugging and holding, really hugging isn't something Riley grew up with...warm comforting holding wasn't something he ever had in his life ...ever. In order to break this strange, comforting but not experience, Riley suggests getting something to eat.
From this point, we are given insight to what men- particularly Riley thinks...and alternately Emma, too. Their type of banter said with the internal thoughts are priceless. Riley nails a lot of the things he has experienced with women and anticipates what Emma will do...This pattern works throughout the book and I was hooked from the first time.
As friends to lovers go... Both Riley and Emma become friends over this week Rarity is away. Riley has such a firm understanding of who he is... and what he thinks is important...it opens Emma's eyes to what she was mourning on the couch...it wasn't that Becket was the love of her life...it was the idea of completing the mystical dream of marrying and it being this perfect wedding vision. It is a turning point.... because in recognizing what that represented... she also saw how tied up in knots she was to fit the perfect mold she thought she had to be...Seeing all of this with Riley's help...was liberating and freeing...and also allowed her to feel again.
Riley is feeling things he never had before...and all of them are about Emma...her softness... her curves and how they would fit so nicely with his hard edges...Both are feeling this pull towards each other and don't know if the other is into it or not...When they realize they both are on the same page....fireworks happen. Riley is the sweetest, sexiest man...and the two of them are perfect together...but they decide for a bit to keep it between the two of them... they aren't sure Rarity would be on board.
This works out because it gives them a chance to see how this all works... it grows and develops roots...and finally it is out in the open and we get some of the sweetest, cute stuff mixed with sexy times. Yum. What works is the deep relationship of knowing each other. We should all be so lucky to have this type of love in our lives.
Then Life Happens.
Yup, real stuff which can scare the shit out of you. The stuff that lives up to all of the cliches... where it separates the men from boys ....where God doesn't give you more than you can handle stuff... Bullshit...
This book approaches so much... a way to educate and open minds to what is happening in our world. The discussion through fiction of today's' needs is always a tricky subject... Is it too heavy handed... or is it just thrown in to make a point...Neither of these issues happened with this book. Instead everything was woven in with purpose to the essential story.
All of the people in this story grew. If you let it, this book may help you grow, as well. It give you a a perspective of seeing what is important between two people. It shows how to be there for one another... and to understand You Are Enough, Always.

This is the first review I’ve ever written that I didn’t give a summary of the book. You can read a perfect description in the author’s synopsis. Instead, I want to tell you what I thought about La Vie En Rose. I read a lot of books but I’ve only read a handful that spoke to me. This is one of those stories. Have you ever felt, after reading a book, that you were meant to read it at that particular time in your life? Well, that’s how I felt after reading La Vie En Rose. What an absolutely beautiful, compelling story! Some stories can make us laugh, some can bring us to tears, some can scare us, some inspire us to take action, and some teach us something new. Every once in a while, an author is able to do all of these things. Lydia Michaels does all these things with La Vie En Rose.
The characters of Riley, Emma, and Rarity were so human, so authentic that I felt like I was reading about my friends or family. I couldn’t help but empathize with them and felt like I was traveling their journey right along with them.
This story will lead you on a roller coaster of emotions. In the first part, I was laughing hysterically. The dialogue was so snappy, so say-able, that it made the story that much more realistic. The pet names Riley had for Emma had me giggling. In the second part of the story, I was crying, unable to believe that this precious couple was having to go through this ordeal. In the third part, I cried some more but it was more of an optimistic and hopeful cry that these people would have the life they deserved.
There are so many messages to glean from this story but what spoke to me was the message that all we really have is “this”, this moment, right now. You can’t worry about what the future holds or how others perceive your choices. All you can do is, as Emma said, “live life with abandon”. This was so well demonstrated as I watched the characters of Riley and Emma evolve throughout this story. I will be reading this book again and again whenever I need a good reminder of that message. This is my first Lydia Michaels book. I can’t wait to read more of her work. Ms Michaels, thank you for writing this beautiful and moving story. La Vie en Rose: {Life in Pink} by Lydia Michaels is an impressive story that I will read again!
This is a wonderful story. Words can't express how moving it is. It's more than a romance. I love this couple's journey and the message it shares about the power of love and how it can see you through the devastation of a life-threatening health crisis. I'm so glad I read this book. It made me grow as a person. I am still reflecting upon this story days later. It's one that will stay with me a long time.
The story starts out with a funny, likable, young couple with a sweet "friends to lovers" theme. Emma is trying to get over the shock of her perfect engagement and wedding plans going down the tubes because her fiancé falls for another woman. Emma shares a loft with her best friend, Rarity, and Rarity's brother, Riley. Rarity has to go out of town, so that leaves Riley to keep an eye on Emma during this devastating time. They have never really been friends, but he gets sucked into trying to help her recover from the broken trust that has knocked her self-esteem to an all time low by using his teasing humor and a hidden soft heart.
When these two start spending time together to lift Emma's spirits, little do they know that a courtship has actually begun. Emma asks Riley to help her start over with some male advice when she decides to go out on the prowl for some "companionship" to boost her flailing ego. This was never going to happen once Riley and Emma get to know one another and realize how comfortable and enjoyable it is. Riley realizes Emma shouldn't be jumping into bed with just anyone to get over her hurt. She is too special for that. Through Riley's eyes Emma is figuring out that what she lost was nothing but a made up illusion of what she thought perfection in a relationship was supposed to be.
Once they become friends, it is easier to be more honest than a dating couple would be. I loved the dual point of view about dating men and women. Riley shares what men are actually thinking when women say or do things that confound them and Emma reciprocates. This leads to some humorous and charming banter that carries throughout the book. Even when these two are at odds, I appreciated that the author allowed the characters to eventually admit their faults to one another and apologize because they know they have something too special to be petty about mistakes or disappointments. This couple actually talks it out when there's a crisis or hurt feelings. It doesn't drag on for days or weeks. Imagine that!
When this new relationship gets to a comfortable place, Lydia Michaels takes this sweet story and puts a huge roadblock in their way. This really makes you think about how unfair life can be, and yet how empowering it can become if you fight to make it to the other side of adversity. Fighting for her life in Emma's case is not easy or pretty. Many times Emma's lack of control over her body, her sexuality, and her emotions is heart-wrenching. It is cruelly realistic, but very well done. There are a lot of ups and downs, but both of these characters do not let frustration or disagreements defeat them. They learn the importance of forgiveness and understanding when they realize how precious their time together may be.
Underneath all that charm and humor, Riley is a truly terrific guy that any woman would be glad to have in her corner, especially during a crisis. He is funny, sexy, loyal, and strong. Even during the worst times, he never wavers. I love Riley! He helps Emma face her demons of self-worth and loss. You feel the frustration and anguish when he has to watch something horrible happen to someone he adores. You experience the heartache when Emma can't take Riley's pain away when watching her suffer. But you also see their successful fight as a unit through all this sorrow. Whatever happens, it happens to both of them as a team. You really feel that throughout the book.
Emma is a real hero in this story. I was amazed by her realistic, heart-wrenching struggle to cope and survive at the young age of 24. The lessons Emma discovers along the way are things it takes many of us years to realize. Through her adversity Emma figures out some big questions about who she wants to be as a person, in her career, and in her relationship with Riley. In the end, she figures out that she is "enough" for her man just the way she is. The bucket list of things that this couple wants to do to distract themselves during the hard times was fun. And yes, they have some hot, smexy times along the way!
Another compelling character in this story is Emma's closest friend, Rarity (love the name). She is Emma's long-time friend and adds to the flavor of the book with her quirky personality, sometimes blunt truths, undying loyalty and love, and fighting spirit to do anything for her best friend. (I see you Lydia Michaels!) There were some humorous and awkward moments when Rarity's best friend and her brother fall for one another. But this couple couldn't ask for a better line of support when they need it the most. And it is a wonder that Rarity and Riley turned out to be such great people when they grew up with such demanding and judgmental parents. Thank goodness they had one another and Emma's support to figure out what they want out of life!
Amongst the humor, romance, and this couple's journey of growth individually and together, this book contains sorrow and a harsh reality that many women are facing every day. If you take the chance, the story will be highly rewarding. There were so many "awww" moments when Riley steps up over and over with his investment of time, integrity, patience, and devotion to Emma. There are laugh out loud moments and arrow to the heart moments of truth. There were so many quotable lines that I wanted to remember in this book that I was highlighting all over my kindle. Despite the devastation such a new, young couple faces, they come out of it stronger, more devoted, and more in love. They show what is really important in life through their hardships, and it made me like them and the story even more. I commend this author for interweaving a difficult subject with a couple finding a lasting love and faith in one another. She writes a delightful and deep love story that manages to educate while giving an underlying message of hope and a romantic, happy ending. Well done, Lydia Michaels!

This is a wonderful story. Words can't express how moving it is. It's more than a romance. I love this couple's journey and the message it shares about the power of love and how it can see you through the devastation of a life-threatening health crisis. I'm so glad I read this book. It made me grow as a person. I am still reflecting upon this story days later. It's one that will stay with me a long time.
The story starts out with a funny, likable, young couple with a sweet "friends to lovers" theme. Emma is trying to get over the shock of her perfect engagement and wedding plans going down the tubes because her fiancé falls for another woman. Emma shares a loft with her best friend, Rarity, and Rarity's brother, Riley. Rarity has to go out of town, so that leaves Riley to keep an eye on Emma during this devastating time. They have never really been friends, but he gets sucked into trying to help her recover from the broken trust that has knocked her self-esteem to an all time low by using his teasing humor and a hidden soft heart.
When these two start spending time together to lift Emma's spirits, little do they know that a courtship has actually begun. Emma asks Riley to help her start over with some male advice when she decides to go out on the prowl for some "companionship" to boost her flailing ego. This was never going to happen once Riley and Emma get to know one another and realize how comfortable and enjoyable it is. Riley realizes Emma shouldn't be jumping into bed with just anyone to get over her hurt. She is too special for that. Through Riley's eyes Emma is figuring out that what she lost was nothing but a made up illusion of what she thought perfection in a relationship was supposed to be.
Once they become friends, it is easier to be more honest than a dating couple would be. I loved the dual point of view about dating men and women. Riley shares what men are actually thinking when women say or do things that confound them and Emma reciprocates. This leads to some humorous and charming banter that carries throughout the book. Even when these two are at odds, I appreciated that the author allowed the characters to eventually admit their faults to one another and apologize because they know they have something too special to be petty about mistakes or disappointments. This couple actually talks it out when there's a crisis or hurt feelings. It doesn't drag on for days or weeks. Imagine that!
When this new relationship gets to a comfortable place, Lydia Michaels takes this sweet story and puts a huge roadblock in their way. This really makes you think about how unfair life can be, and yet how empowering it can become if you fight to make it to the other side of adversity. Fighting for her life in Emma's case is not easy or pretty. Many times Emma's lack of control over her body, her sexuality, and her emotions is heart-wrenching. It is cruelly realistic, but very well done. There are a lot of ups and downs, but both of these characters do not let frustration or disagreements defeat them. They learn the importance of forgiveness and understanding when they realize how precious their time together may be.
Underneath all that charm and humor, Riley is a truly terrific guy that any woman would be glad to have in her corner, especially during a crisis. He is funny, sexy, loyal, and strong. Even during the worst times, he never wavers. I love Riley! He helps Emma face her demons of self-worth and loss. You feel the frustration and anguish when he has to watch something horrible happen to someone he adores. You experience the heartache when Emma can't take Riley's pain away when watching her suffer. But you also see their successful fight as a unit through all this sorrow. Whatever happens, it happens to both of them as a team. You really feel that throughout the book.
Emma is a real hero in this story. I was amazed by her realistic, heart-wrenching struggle to cope and survive at the young age of 24. The lessons Emma discovers along the way are things it takes many of us years to realize. Through her adversity Emma figures out some big questions about who she wants to be as a person, in her career, and in her relationship with Riley. In the end, she figures out that she is "enough" for her man just the way she is. The bucket list of things that this couple wants to do to distract themselves during the hard times was fun. And yes, they have some hot, smexy times along the way!
Another compelling character in this story is Emma's closest friend, Rarity (love the name). She is Emma's long-time friend and adds to the flavor of the book with her quirky personality, sometimes blunt truths, undying loyalty and love, and fighting spirit to do anything for her best friend. (I see you Lydia Michaels!) There were some humorous and awkward moments when Rarity's best friend and her brother fall for one another. But this couple couldn't ask for a better line of support when they need it the most. And it is a wonder that Rarity and Riley turned out to be such great people when they grew up with such demanding and judgmental parents. Thank goodness they had one another and Emma's support to figure out what they want out of life!
Amongst the humor, romance, and this couple's journey of growth individually and together, this book contains sorrow and a harsh reality that many women are facing every day. If you take the chance, the story will be highly rewarding. There were so many "awww" moments when Riley steps up over and over with his investment of time, integrity, patience, and devotion to Emma. There are laugh out loud moments and arrow to the heart moments of truth. I was really happy for the chance to read this book. I've read many of Lydia Michaels' books.
This starts off kind of emotional. Emma gets dumped by her fiance' Becket- while she's been planning their wedding. Emma's confidence is shaken. She stays home from her job and cries almost constantly. Emma's best friend/roommate Rarity has to go out of town for a week. She tells her brother Riley to keep an eye on Emma. The three of them share their NYC loft apartment.
While Rarity is gone for a week, Emma and Riley spend more & more time together. Riley
is a crack up. He has so many funny lines. I thought I was highlighting the whole book.
Most of the jokes were at Emma's expense. They'd known each other since grade school so Emma took it better than I would have. As they got closer, the teasing was more loving. I thought it was cute that Riley was preoccupied with her "Hobbit toes" (Emma is petite and has small feet). They keep their budding romance secret for a while, but finally reveal it to Rarity. I really liked her reaction. I think that Rarity might be my favorite BFF & secondary character. All three of them have really funny and kind personalities. Emma & Riley are tied for my favorite book couple (I still love Frank & Maureen McCullough).
As they get closer, Riley really shines for Emma. He really lifts her up with his encouragement. Riley to Emma: " If nothing lasts forever, then I'm glad I was your risk. But I'd rather be your nothing and last forever".
The 'I love you' comes early in the book- before the 40% mark.
So there's lots of time for their relationship to change and grow. I love it when there's a good amount of time spent on the H & h's relationship.
Wow Riley is so sweet to Emma-even before the second half.
Emma sees her ex with the ow when she's out to dinner with Riley. I was pretty disappointed in Emma's reaction-which was like a slap in Riley's face. Riley would have every right to run the other direction. He does explain that she's better than her ex and his opinion of her shouldn't matter to her.
Riley to Emma:
"Do you know how beautifully you wear your courage? I love watching your shoulders rise in the face of a challenge. It's not the delicate slope that turns me on, it's the language they speak when you're silent. Your whole face lights up when you hold your shoulders high. It's like you're fearless." Riley saying this is so ironic.
The 2nd half of the book is Riley and Emma growing closer in a way they never thought or imagined. I continued to love Riley, but Emma really shows her stuff in the 2nd half. She has to.
This book is about L.I.F.E.- real life. It's not smooth and perfect. I really appreciated what Emma and Riley had to go through. Rarity is awesome as best friend and sister to support them all the way.
The 2nd half of the book is every couple's worst nightmare. It was so emotional for me to read this.
Riley really shows Emma how much he loves her. I was right there hoping and waiting for Emma to get through this. Terrible things happen to young couples in love. It was not all pretty and happy for quite a while. Very realistic in my opinion. It this were a movie, my husband would ask: "Is this a true story?" Well, yeah! My Emma and my Riley! They're young (mid 20s) but are so great at meeting an conquering the (major) challenges in life.
Riley and Rarity do come up with a new career plan as a result of helping Emma.
When Riley goes to his dad to ask for money in his trust fund, it reminded me of "Love Story"- when Ollie goes to his dad (grrrr) to get money for Jenny. Riley's dad's name is Oliver too!
I loved the ending- so romantic and sweet. MORE highlighting here too.
What a beautiful LOVE story. **sigh** I think that this will be a (regular) reread for me!

2.5 stars. Several stars lost for being a drawn-out breast cancer manual, and overwhelming bouts of preachy lecturing about organic foods and products. I would have DNFd but I wanted to see if there was a happy ending, so I pushed through without throwing my kindle across the room.

From the very beginning of the book I was hooked. All Emma wanted was her fairy tale life of living in pink and pearls. A wedding and a lifetime of happiness until a day where it all came crashing down. Riley who never committed to anything found the only thing fighting for with Emma. When real life hits them they fought back hard and was able to overcome everything thrown at them. Once you start you won't be able to put it down. Another outstanding job by Lydia Michaels.

I thought this book was funny and at times I laughed out loud. I thought it was dearing how Riley pulled Emma out of her down times making her smile and laugh. You have a story inside a story from Emma’s ex to Riley family issues along with his sister’s secret. Riley is really like no man you have ever met at times he is childlike which makes him even more darling at times maybe not so much. This is a pretty powerful story about real life issues that a lot of us deal with today. Emma is a strong woman to have stood up when life could have been easier to have pitied herself. She has some very tough choices and then must face the fall out as her body and mind changes. Riley is what every women dreams of in a man always standing by your women even through the tough times. I myself am a very lucky women when dealing with issues of this nature I have a Riley in my life which I am very thankful for.
The author writes a very touching story that will grab your heart adding humor to keep you laughing through the tough times. This was very well written you can feel each emotion of each character and all they are going through. Life is tough when facing these issues you must decide whether to fight or lie down and die. Lydia Michaels is marketing La Vie en Rose as women's fiction. She has done this because she felt the novel didn't fall into the typical mold of the romance novel. What she doesn't seem to understand is that none of her novels are typical or fall into a mold. They are all as extraordinary as the women who writes them.
That being said, she is however right, La Vie en Rose is not a romance novel... it is a love story. Romance is the candy flowers on the cake icing. It's pretty, but it has no substance. It can't sustain you though life. Love is the big pasta dinner that serves the whole family.
La Vie en Rose showcases that love. The love of family, friends, and most importantly, the love that only the one that shares your heart can give, when life gives you the hardest times to face.
I can't tell you you who was the hero of this story, Riley or Emma. Because both faced equally hard challenges. Some may think my saying that is absurd. The person facing the illness is certainly the one facing the toughest challenge. But having stood by and watched someone I love face Cancer, I can tell you, not only is it heartbreaking, it is exhausting, gut-wrenching and painful. And as Riley discovered, so hard to be strong, all the time for them, because they need the ability to lean on you.
La Vie en Rose is a beautiful story, full of laughter, tears, the joy of discovering love, and learning to live past our fears and embrace life.

This book!!!! First off I am not a review writer usually, I just never know how to really express how the book made me feel. That being said, I have to try with this book because it is just that good! I love Lydia Michaels' work. I think she is an extremely talented writer who writes the kind of romances I want to read. When I curl up with with a romance I want it to be HOT and STEAMY and Lydia Michaels delivers!!!! But I also want the characters to be well thought out, realistic, likable, and compelling. Again Lydia delivers. What makes LaVien Rose extra special is how much HEART it has. It's a romance with a brain, it grabs you from the beginning and does not let you go!!! It is beautifully written and goes places most romances do not. The problems these characters face are real, heart wrenching problems. This is a story with a message, one I will not soon forget. BUY THIS BOOK!! I absolutely loved it and I ❤Lydia.

From the beginning, I loved Riley. The more I read, the more I fell in love with him. He was Emma's rock throughout everything. Emma is my hero!!! Everyone needs a Riley in their life. I laughed and I cried(A LOT). Once again, Lydia Michaels has nailed a perfect book!!!!

This was a real love story for the ages. So many people love to get lost in the typical love stort, myself included, but this one is not the typical plot. This book makes you really see what happens and what so many people try to ignore
Emma was getting ready to be married, when she found out that her fiance was in love with someone else. Now so many people go through the crying and dejected faze when you first come out of a relationship but Emma had something that so many do not, a roommate who although doesn't know what he is doing is still trying to make Emma feel like the wonderful women that she is.
Riley is a great guy but doesn't do relationships so when his feelings for Em starts to change he becomes a little panicked. But then the shots keep coming in the form of cancer.
This book shows both sides of when cancer happens to a person. It shows what happens to the actual patient and what happens to those that love the patient. You will not get out of this book without crying heart wrenching tears, especially if you have had or have known someone who had cancer.
Trust me I kept comparing Em's experience with my experience of skin cancer and I wish I had been as strong as her. This is a great read that can help so many find closure or really understand what it is like to go through this type of trauma.
This was a great read about the ups and downs of a real love story, about cancer, and about how to survive life and use the knowledge that you learn in order to help others.

La Vie En Rose {Life in Pink} dragged me in from the first page. I was hooked. But, this book wasn't what I expected it to be. It was much, much more, taking me on an emotional roller coaster ride that ended on the last page. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and cried again. My heart went out to Rulie and Emma as well as Rarity. Ms. Michaels deals with a number of sensitive issues in a straightforward manner. Excellent book. A must read for anyone who's ever had to deal with life-changing illness.

Oh, Lydia Michaels how I love thee and your stories. I absolutely loved this book. Ironically with the title I should have figured out what was coming but it was written so well that everything was still a surprise for me. And let me tell you if any woman has to go through a tough time we would all be so lucky to have someone as beautiful, thoughtful and loyal as Riley was.

Riley Lockhart was living his life as he saw fit. He didn't follow any rules. He worked. He drank. He had sex. He had friends. And he had a sister and a roommate whom was his sister's best friend. He was close to his sister but not particularly to Emma.
Emma Sanders is like most girls with a ton of insecurities but has always dreamed of love and happiness. For her she's living the dream planning her wedding until her fiance comes over and breaks it off for another woman. This new turn of events causes Emma to be heart broken and turns her into an ice cream thief.
"I feel . . . beautifully brave. But I'm sad."
Riley is not the most emotional guy and he just wants his life back but his crying, ice cream stealing roommate is changing everything. At first, he just wants to stop her from doing anything foolish post break up but instead he starts to realize that Emma is awesome.

They started as friends first hanging out but then all of a sudden both want more causing the once commitment shy man to fall head over heals for his sweet roommate. I absolutely adored these two together. At first I loved the corniness of Riley and Emma, but then I fell head over heels with Riley's sweetness at the same time Emma did. Emma had the potential to be one of the dreaded heroines where her insecurities take over and become the story instead they are just the part of her that make her real while she has to deal with what life is throwing her way.

I loved how the story was set up and how it finished full circle. I loved the content of the story and how it was told and dealt with. I loved the fact that Lydia was well researched helping to suspend belief by truly getting lost in the story. The way the three parts were set up helped tell so much more without over doing it. I also liked the educational aspect of the story. But I think my favorite thing was the beautiful story, which wasn't filled with unnecessary angst. It was a simple story about love, and hope. Gah! There are so many things I loved that I could go on forever, but I don't want to give away the story because it's a good one and needs to be experienced without knowing too much going in.

This was not the book I thought it was. I loved the first half, but knew something was going to happen as I still had a lot to go. Cancer, happened and I had to skip to the end to see if she survived. She did, so I went back and skimmed the rest. I always skip books with women that have cancer as my mother died when I was a teen. Stupid me the pink bows on cover didn't alert me. It was a beautiful love story and he was a dream man but cancer books are too sad.

Heart-wrenching, passionate perfection!
This book will rip your heart to pieces before putting it back together in the most incredible way. Lydia Michaels is a master storyteller who has created true beauty out of some of life's ugliest moments. Although it starts out light and humorous, this is no typical romance. Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotion.

I knew going in that La Vie en Rose was not going to be a typical romance, but the thing typical can be overrated. What this book was is a testament to hope, to life, to love and the willingness to fight with everything you have. Sometimes funny, sometimes crazy, sometimes sad and always courageous this is a beautifully told story.
Emma's world was crushed when her fiancé ditched her for his other woman and with her best friend and roommate going out of town, her best friend's brother and her other roommate is left to pick up the remaining pieces. It was interesting watching Emma and Riley really begin to get to know one another with Rarity out of town because even though they'd known each other for years, they'd never really been overly friendly. Without the buffer of Rarity these two really got to know one another and appreciated each other's uniqueness and see past their preconceived notions of one another. When things turn physical there's the potential for life to get messy, but instead both their lives become richer. Things are going really well when their lives are turned completely upside down and their journey becomes epic and the fight of their young lives.
There was such realism to this book and the journey Emma and Riley take is one that most people hope they never have to be a part of and they do it with amazing grace and resilience. Throughout this book Emma proved she wasn't the innocent little girl everyone thought she was and that she was a strong and tough young woman capable of fighting the toughest of fights. Riley shows his love day in and day out and throughout everything he refuses to give up hope, he never stops believing and he does everything he needs to do to make life easier for his Emma. There were many scenes and conversations that brought me to tears but there were equally as many that had me smiling, laughing or just rejoicing.
Some might say La Vie en Rose isn't a romance and to them I say then you haven't experienced a life of real love. This book is absolutely a romance but it is more than that; this book is knowing that love is more than romantic moments, it takes work, it is messy and in the end it is two people doing everything they can for that most important person in their lives and loving every minute they have together.

I love it when a book takes me on an unexpected journey. Where you think you know where you're going and --WHAM -- the author throws you a doozy of a curve ball and leaves you breathless. And the end result is something you never saw coming, but you are so damn glad you experienced the ride.
La Vie en Rose is that unexpected journey. At least for me, it was. I went in totally blind. I had no clue what to expect. So, writing this review is difficult. I'd hate to ruin the reader's own journey when they decide to pick up this book and delve into the unknown.
By definition, La Vie en Rose is NOT your typical hearts and flowers romance. It isn't painted with pretty images of perfection. It is ugly, rough, and honest, which gives it its own flavor of perfection. It is the definition of what it truly means to love someone. It is about the sacrifices we make for those who matter to us. It is the pain and struggles, the sorrow and the joy, the little things that make a difference, and the fact that no matter what happens---your partner stays by your side. Your family, whether by blood or not, will always have your back.
I went through a gamut of emotions while reading this book.I laughed and cried and thought about how I live me own life--the decisions I make--and experienced some much needed self-awareness.
Thank you, Lydia Michaels, for showing me the not so pretty picture of what true love is and writing such a thought provoking book. You never cease to amaze me with your courageous stories and beautiful words.

I received "La Vie en Rose" to read and review and all I can say is--Wow! What a roller coaster of feelings. I laughed and cried over Emma and Riley’s story. Not just any story or romance novel, but a love story. At certain spots, I had to put the book down and walk away because the emotional ride Ms. Michaels took me on was hard to take. Not because it was bad, but because it struck such a nerve with me. I’ve been a caregiver for my father and mother who had similar experiences.
From the beginning, the story grabs you and I read it in two sittings because I read at night when the house is quiet. The flow is good, no plot holes at all. Everything makes sense which I appreciate in my reading--Authentic.
The main characters are plausible and likable. I rooted for them from the beginning. At times I didn’t know who was stronger against their challenges because Ms. Michaels shows each side of them through their actions. Good job! I was right there with them.
If you want to read a love story that takes you on a journey of ups and downs giving meaning to family, friends, lovers and more, take it with Emma and Riley. You’ll want more. I’d say more, but I don’t want to give away spoilers! Trust me, just buy your copy today.

I recently discovered Lydia Michaels as an author and have found her books to be very intriguing. This one is no less so! The story line is lovely, thought provoking, entertaining and interesting. It includes likeable characters, interesting twists and great love scenes! You are interested in the characters and what happens to them and with them- their struggles are real. You care about and relate to them. You see them grow and change- and you love them! This was a wonderful story which I will read again! Emma is a girly girl and Riley is a man's man- and both find things in each other they didn't know existed while bringing out qualities in themselves they didn't realize were there either.. excellent character and plot development along with a sigh inducing romance!

Very well written and edited stand-alone story with no cliffhanger.
This book was so much more than I expected, from beginning to end. A love story that seemed too good to be true, but truly just became richer and more profound. There are very few books that check the laugh-out-loud, steamy-dirty-talk, and heart-wrenching tear jerker boxes, but this one does.
Once I started, it was impossible to put this book down. I read all 380 pages in one day. I finished emotionally exhausted, but smiling and sad to see this lovely group of people go.
Strongly recommended for fans of second chance love, New York City and happy endings.

So I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I'd seen the 5 star reviews, but I see that a lot and never quit get why there 5 stars. Except this one I get. There are few words that can describe how emotionally tied to this book I was. I will be seeking out more by this author.

This review is going to be a bit different from my normal. This book is written in three parts, each part of this story is unique so I am going to write my review in three parts.
Part one:
In part one we meet Riley and Emma. We learn about them and watch as their relationship grows and changes. Roommate's become friends become lovers. It is beautiful, fun, flirty, and sexy. I loved watching Emma blossom and find herself. Watching Riley realize he wasn't as much of a bachelor as he thought might have been even better though.
Part two:
In a word is hard. It is real. It is ugly. But I wouldn't trade it for the world. If Riley hadn't already won my heart, he would have stolen it in this part.
Part three:
Is healing. It is beautiful. It is everything.
There were times I didn't think I wanted to keep reading this book. There were times I couldn't read fast enough. An absolutely incredible book with amazing characters.

It deals with betrayals, cheating, self worth, doubt, image, character, strengths, weakness, health, sickness, financial hardships, and so much more. Mostly, it's about true 💘, finding that one person who will stand & dance with you in the rain. A person who will document your journey be it pictures, music, journals, etc. Love you all the more. Warning an emotional ride inside the cover, well worth the trip. AJM.

Wow! Everytime I pick up a Lydia Michaels book I get hooked. This one was no different. Emma, Rarity and Riley are all roomies in an upscale loft apartment. In the beginning of the book I felt that Riley was a bit of a brat. After all he was really selfish sounding. Emma is going through a crisis with a huge life event that did not occur and Rarity is hiding something very important from her family.
This is a beautiful story full of love and family and laughs. But there is a bit of dama too and after everything we get a beautiful ending. This is another top read for me.
