I had really high hopes for this book - and they were mercilessly dashed within the first 50 pages.

As this is a collection of three stories, I decided to stick with it to see it through to the end, and although it improved marginally with the second book, Charmed, I was still left feeling extremely disappointed.

As a fan of fairytale reimaginings, the premise for the book was really intriguing: interconnected retellings of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, with a few more classic fairytales sprinkled in-between - what’s not to love, right?

But the stories were bland, the interesting twists and changes too few and far between to redeem them, the sex scenes interspersed through the three books clunky and mostly irrelevant to the plot, making it look like they were forcibly shoehorned in just for the sake of it.

Unfortunately, the characters do not fare much better; although some of the initial ideas showed real promise, they were not developed on, falling flat into unlikeable half-baked tropes instead.

And then there is the writing. Grammar and punctuation are a pet peeve of mine; if I spot errors over and over again in a book, it is enough to put me off the story altogether. And the author of this book should really, really go read about the correct usage of commas, as this kind of syntax is something I would expect from half-passable fanfiction, not from a published author. Too often the sentences run into each other, to the point that one has to stop and re-read them a couple of times to make sense of them.

There is a sentence in the third book:

“After the fierceness of the storm damp lingered on every surface and the trees glistened green as water dripped from their branches, but although there was a light breeze it was not cold.”

The use of 'but although' aside, there really should have been a comma between 'storm' and 'damp', and another between 'breeze' and 'it'. And maybe I am nitpicking here, but this was done throughout the three books, which I found very off-putting.

At the end of the day, this was not a good fairytale retelling, nor was it a good book; if you are in the mood for something along these lines, I would recommend going for A Court of Thorns and Roses (which puts a lovely fae-centric twist on Beauty and the Beast), The Wrath and the Dawn (my favourite version of Arabian Nights yet) or any of the Twisted Tale Disney novels.

Two stars, reluctantly given.

I highly enjoyed the book. I got it because of the absolutely beautiful cover but in the first two pages you realise this isn't a fairytale book for kids. So dark and twisted, I had to go grab the other books by this author from the library immediately. I don't think I can ever watch Snow White without blushing again. The downside was the fact that it was the same prince in all three stories. I feel like he wasn't a character that I connected with enough to want to read about in all three stories.

This book is horrible, I've never finished it.. It is cringy as hell. I'm sorry for those who liked it but I hated it.

I love the idea of this story but the target audience was a bit questionable to me. Some parts were VERY adult and others were a bit immature. There were also a few weird plot holes, stiff dialogue and boring characters.

This is one of those books that I have had for longer than I care to admit to, or remember. I bought it when I was a little obsessed by fairytale retellings. I still enjoy them, but this was not quite what I was expecting.

This volume is made up of three separate novels: Poison, Charm and Beauty. They can either be read as standalone novels, or as a trilogy, with characters sometimes featuring in more than one tale. For retellings, and fairytales in general, I prefer mine when they have a darkness to them. For this volume, this is where the problem lay for me.

There is a darkness here - a trigger warning for some would be that subjects such as rape are portrayed - but I didn't feel that the darkness was authentic. By this, I mean that there were times when the atmosphere of the stories was actually quite light and child-like. But then there would be a switch, and you have themes such as rape coming through. There was also a jarring with the characters - there were times when feminist themes came through, but there were also times when the female characters were incredibly stereotypical (Cinderella was perhaps one of the most annoying, but it was interesting to see how the members of her family were portrayed).

There were some interesting ideas here, and interesting ways of turning the tales around. Sadly, and it could just be that I bought this volume so long ago, but this just didn't turn into a great read for me.

Poison

8 years after reading Charm without knowing it was book 2 of a trilogy 🙏 good god am I a slut for fairytales retellings and this one is so high up the list 😍 not only did I get Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, I got Belle, Rapunzel, Little red riding hood and Rumplestiltskin🥳 didn't NOT except the casual orgies but can't say they disappointed.

also!!! how did I not know she's the author of Behind her eyes 😭😭 she's a legend for having such different writing styles

Sarah Pinborough tackles fairy tale retellings. These aren’t modernized; instead, they’re deliciously twisted takes on the originals.

Poison

Having much of the story told through the point of view of the Queen (Lilith) is a brilliant and enjoyable narrative choice. She’s not a one-note character; she’s got a depth to her and is much more than a jealous, pretty face. She may be cruel, but she must be so to consolidate and retain her power in a male-dominated, misogynist world. No one in this foreign kingdom loves her, so she chooses to rule by fear.

The four-year age difference between Lilith and Snow White is excellent. It serves to highlight the bright line contrast between Lilith’s challenging upbringing and Snow White’s easy, luxurious one. Snow White is definitely *not* as pure as the driven snow.

The arrival of the huntsman and the ensuing seductions are illuminating. Cameos by the great-grandmother and Aladdin also enthrall.

The prince’s POV chapters seem a bit jarring—until they suddenly make sense.

The ending is fantastic—not at all what you’d expect from this sort of material, but everything you’d expect from the brilliance that is the mind of Sarah Pinborough. She is an amazing author who consistently fails to disappoint.

Charm

This one is quite different from Poison. The pacing is much slower in the beginning. The first book really jumps out at you, and this one is more of a slow burn.

Once Buttons and the Huntsman show up, things get quite interesting.

Bringing back Lilith is an excellent choice.

I did not realize how closely this one would tie in with Poison, and it works extremely well in that regard.

Learning Cinderella's backstory with her family is illuminating.

The ending is delightful in the most wicked way possible. I expected nothing less from Sarah P, and I was not disappointed whatsoever.

Beauty

Even though this is the third installment in this series, it’s actually a prequel to both of the previous stories.

This is essentially a mashup of Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel, and some others interspersed.

It is insightful to see the Huntsman’s point of view. He’s an excellent character, and having him around makes the Prince slightly less insufferable.

Rumplestiltskin is a surprise. The Beast is a masterful turn of heel, as is the reveal of Petra’s great-grandmother’s true identity.

The prose is beautiful, the characterizations are creative, and the plot twists remain unforeseeable. This one ranges from violent and bloody to brutal and sexy.

The writing is just brilliant. Only Sarah P could have me reading the retellings of fairy tales—and loving them.

An excellent collection of fairy-tales that cross over into each other. Fresh takes on Snow White (Poison), Cinderella (Charm) and Beauty and the Beast (Beauty) - adult versions very far from Disney with sex scenes and everything. Villains like the Evil Queen in Snow white and the Huntsman find their happily ever afters, heroes turn out not to be heroes, some villains turn out not to be villains at all, and the lovely princesses...not so princessy. If the first book in the collection - Poison - left me slightly alarmed at the ending, then Charm explained away a lot of the wickedness in Poison and Beauty made me pity the visuals-obsessed prince after three spectacular failures to secure a meek and simply pretty bride. Loved all the amazing illustrations! An entertaining and thought-provoking read for sure.

I agree with another reviewer - I'm glad I had this edition with all 3 tales together. I don't think I would have bothered to borrow or buy the 2nd Charm and 3rd Beauty after Poison. Poison is a good story on its own, but the 3 together are a satisfying trio that interweave very well. A curious mixture of some adult scenes (not enough to class this as erotic fiction but don't give this to children to read!) and moralising, and some great little twists. Loved the characters - what happened to Buttons though? And Petra & Toby? Definitely worth a read. Never can choose between 3 and 4 stars....

I couldn’t even get through the Snow White retelling. I found it boring, bland and I just didn’t care enough to see the ending and felt the same about the retellings of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty - I didn’t care enough to even give them a go.

This book has been sitting on my TBR pile for literally a decade, probably, and I kept putting it off because of how chunky it is. The length is not the issue with this book.

I read it every night for a week and I still don’t care and I can probably only name one of the new dwarfs.

This is definitely an adult retelling.

That being said, I enjoyed it, it found some characters and decisions unpleasant, or even less than. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and the concluding story was satisfying. In my opinion, don't let this one pass you by. It's worth (at least) one read.

Really cool (and dark and erotic) twists on a few classic fairy tales, such as Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood. The stories start separately but manage to get mixed at one point, connected by a down-to-earth enchanted huntsman and a perverted prince charming.
Definitely, recommend and definitely 18+.

I read this on the recommendation from the wife, well I'm glad she told me to read it, it was a brilliantly clever reworking of pretty much all the fairy tales we know and love, was actually surprised it had a fairly low rating but I'll put that down to snobbery, very enjoyable read

First, a word about the design of this book. It’s a beautiful little hardback. Mid-blue shading to midnight with a gold thorn hedge bordering the edges and a fairytale castle outlined in gold on the front cover. The font for the title and author looks a little like an old gothic font that’s started to grow out from the serifs. It’s lovely, and at a glance I would say it falls firmly into YA territory. My boss, who catalogues these books, was so convinced it was YA that she spent quite some time chasing down information about it to make sure it really should be in the adult section. She then borrowed it, read it, and came back with a firm “yes, it’s definitely an adult book!”

She wouldn’t give me any spoilers, but when I went to her after reading the first tale, Poison, and complained that I didn’t like it, she just smiled and advised me to persevere.

Me: “Well, I hope that bloody Prince gets a good kicking from Karma!”
Her: “Just keep reading.”

I had such a strong negative reaction to the first story that I stopped and did these reviews after each story.

Poison (Snow White)

I love fairytales, and I especially love fairytales retold. Got a new spin to put on them? Give it to me! I can’t get enough of them. So, I was mightily disappointed by Poison. It started off really well. It’s from the step-mother’s point of view, and she is not a happy lady. If only we’d stayed with her throughout.

I hated the ending. HATED IT! It left me feeling like the episode of Dexter that made me stop watching that series, and the episode of American Gothic that made me stop watching that series. You can see where I’m going with this, can’t you?

Some of the character motivations were muddy (Snow’s behaviour with the huntsman), and still felt that way at the end of the story. I hated the ending. I only hope this is resolved in one of the next two stories.

Charm (Cinderella)

I liked Charm much more than Poison, but I was still taken aback by parts of it. Buttons & Cinderella? Hoo! Didn’t see that coming, but I have to say I love the body- and sex-positive aspects of this book. The women know what they want and aren’t afraid to take it.

One of the best things about Charm was the character development of Cinderella. She starts out as pretty shallow and self-centred, and we see her gradually grow up through this story. I loved how she slowly became more self-aware, and more cognizant of the impact of her selfishness on those around her.

I LOVED the epilogue. I actually cheered. There may even have been a fist-pump. Loved it.

BEAUTY (Sleeping Beauty)

Oh man, I’m so glad I kept reading. And I’m glad I borrowed this omnibus edition from the library. I think if I’d picked them up as the three separate books they were originally published as, I would never have gone any further than Poison and I would have been missing out on a real treat.

Beauty goes some way to explaining why the Prince behaves as he does in the other tales. He’s still a dick, but he’s an understandable dick. I loved the special twist Pinborough gave to Beauty’s tale, and how it gave the characters a real moral dilemma to cope with. Would I have been as strong or as weak in their shoes? I hope I'll never have to find out.

---

So, taken together, the three tales are a very satisfying read. Pinborough manages to weave in other familiar tales without making you feel like they are shoe-horned in, or just there for lip service. Poison is probably the weakest in terms of a stand-alone tale. There are so many dangling threads it looks like a sweater made by someone who hates sewing in the ends (trust me - I know whereof I speak). The other two tales pick up those loose ends and weave them in so neatly. There are hints of other tales to be told, without leaving the reader dangling. It would be great if Pinborough produced more along these lines, but I won’t feel like I’m missing pieces of a puzzle if they aren’t forthcoming.

If you love farirytales, sex scenes, dark secrets and a little bit of blood this book would love your shelf.

First of all I picked up this book because of the cover. It gave me the vibes of YA contemporary retelling of fairytales but... I guess was wrong. After all a book is a product. Need to inform the customer about it. Cover needed to inform it's 17+
Imagine what if a younger kid brought it because of the cover.
(lesson - Never judge a book by its cover)

I have to say I thought the 'poison' was the most questionable one out of three. Other two were fine.
(spoilers awaiting for you...)

Poison
It was about Snow White. Story line was fine until she begged the huntsman to do WHAT???
Next the prince. Dwarves were cramping in their cottage but they never said ''NO" to their girl but to poor prince who was wounded, then set up his bed next to the coffin.
The twist at the end really amazed me BTW.
Honestly if there wasn't the other two stories I never recognize it was a series connected together.

Charm
This one is much better. It's about Cinderella. My problem was, if she was their favourite spoiled child how did they forgot her and treat her like a servant girl? Couldn't find any answer yet. The prince! Are you kidding me? The twist at the end made me literally frozen for few seconds. Didn't saw that coming. It's hard to forgive for that... Sorry Sarah.

Beauty
Retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Story was interesting and much more better than the first two.
Only thing that concerned me was grandma encouraging her one and only grandchild to go into the woods with two strangers. But at the end it serves it purpose but still... Never mind.

Good things I really enjoyed...
Character of Dreamy, Rose and huntsman (only in the 'Beauty').
We can see Aladdin and the lamp, Robin as Buttons, Rapunzel as the great grandma of Perta, the red ridding hood and the wolf (Tobey, which reminds me of a cat).
Thank you for reading this far.
P. S.-Reviewing a book is not easy as you read.
Lots of ❤
