A Top 20 Amazon Bestseller & over a million copies sold...
When there's someone mad in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? (Nah, not those four dudes in grey outfits.) You call Alice Effin' Wonder, in a white straight jacket from cell 14 in the London Lunatic Asylum.
My name is Alice Wonder. I'm locked up in an asylum. I don't remember who I am.
I know one thing
When Supernatural Monsters threaten the city of London, I'm the one to call. Why? I guess I'm as bonkers as the monsters themselves. Little do I know, that I'm about to embark on a journey to find love, who I really am, and the secret history of Oxford University itself.

Unfortunately finishing this box set became a chore. This is just three of the 11 books in the series. While I enjoyed Alice in Wonderland I am not a “super fan” of the book. I am skeptical of retellings but this intrigued me because it starts with Alice in a present day England as a patient at a mental facility and she is allowed day passes to work with Mr. Pillar on solving a crime involving missing girls. The suspect…. Wait for it…. The Cheshire. That’s just the beginning it twists and turns from there like Nancy Drew trying to solve crime while come to grips that she herself might be this Alice from the Underground (changed to Wonderland when Carroll originally published) and so many other strange “persons” are also “topside”. If your a big fan of the original this might be for you, but I am stopping at book 3.
Who can not love a retold Alice in Wonderland fairy tale?! I purchased the books via Kindle - the price was cheap I figured even if I didn't enjoy it, that I wasn't out that much.
Book 1 was AWESOME. The characters were easy to get into as was the story line and Pilla the Killa was just a hoot all the way through. A hookah smoking caterpillar who is also a detective and a serial killer -- and like Indiana Jones, he can strangle people with his hookah hoses.
I laughed through about half of the book and really enjoyed it.
Book 2 was good. Still a good storyline, with more characters brought in and a bit more of the overall storyline brought in...less of the caterpillar and a bit grittier to read but still - retold fairy tale stuff and had me wondering who was who and what was what.
Book 3. - My least favorite of the trilogy. Pilla was mostly on the sidelines or not in the story at all. New serial killers to catch and even in book 3, Alice not sure she is Alice so she had issues she should have worked out by now...I would think.
Not a lot of laughing in Book 3 but a lot of looking to see how much I had left to read and hoping the ending was going to make a big shabang to make it worth reading all 3 together,
The storyline began jumping around as the time frame in the storyline began jumping around ...and again, my least favorite of the book.
Then I saw that there are additional books to this series - which I will not buy.
Great beginning, mediocre middle and less than stellar ending.
Book 3 needs more work to bring it up to speed with the other 2.
{My thoughts} – {date entire series completed} – {12.13.2018}
I’m not sure if I have ever listed all the reasons that I enjoy {fairytale} like books. I am one mega fan of them. I love each and every retelling I have read at this point. {Cameron Jace} has become one of my favorite authors over the years because of his {unique} ability to spin {classic} tales into something {new} and {incredible}. I have read these particular books in the past and enjoyed them. However, I had not been able to complete the series. I am going to {attempt} to play {catch up} on this series. I have {decided} that since I am going to {read} them again that I am going to re-write my past {reviews}.
– {Book 1: Insanity} – {11.14.2018} – Alice in Wonderland has been a beloved classic by many over the years. Cameron Jace has taken this classic and turned it into something new and something fresh that readers young and old will surely be able to fall in love with over and over again. This book is chalk full of information about Lewis Carroll. It also contains in a round about way characters, descriptions and more from the Alice and Wonderland book series. I was rather excited to see that I am able to access this series through Kindle Unlimited seeing as I had lost my original copies of these books when I had a hard drive crash.
Alice Wonder is introduced as a modern day lunatic that is a current underground resident at the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum. She has been a resident since she was seventeen years old and had killed all of her classmates and her boyfriend in a bus accident. Once she had been tried for that crimes she was sentenced to the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum until at which point she could be deemed sane again.
When Alice was a child she’d slipped away from her older sister and some how had become lost. When she had found her way back she was telling a tale about a place called Wonderland. She attempted to hold true to her story that Wonderland was real throughout the beginning of her stay at the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum. After a while and many shock therapy sessions she began to think that she was indeed insane and that Wonderland was a hallucination and was never a real place.
It wasn’t until she met Pillar that things had started to change for her and her personality. He finds a way to smuggle her in and out of Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum so that she can help him solve crimes that are happening because of a War with Wonderland monsters. In this particular book it is up to Alice to save a young girl from the Cheshire Cat. The Cheshire Cat has been on a recent killing spree and it is up to Alice to help the Pillar figure out why it is happening and how to stop it from continuing.
If you want to know what happens to Alice, what her mad adventures are and what kind of person she has become, it’s a good idea to read this book. I promise you won’t be disappointed if you enjoy classic fairytales being retold in a different style. I have not personally read the original Alice in Wonderland story – I think I just may need to after reading this insane adventure that Cameron Jace has written.
– {Book 2: Figment} – {11.28.2018} – There is a lot going on in this book, however, not a lot of it is quotes you want to remember kind of material. Alice seems to go for awhile without hearing from the Pillar and it makes her think that she hallucinated every encounter she’d had with him. She then starts to question her own sanity again. Honestly in her situation, I think I’d be questioning my own sanity on a regular basis.
Eventually, Pillar summons for her and they go on another adventure together. This time, it’s to try and stop the Cheshire Cat and his newly acquired accomplish in murderous rampages The Muffin Man. It’s an interesting story to read about The Muffin Man and his family within the pages of this book. It is also rather interesting to read about Pillar and how he and Alice piece together little clues here and there in an attempt to try and bring The Cheshire Cat and The Muffin Man to justice. It would appear that the two of them working side by side have some type of unofficial detective gig going on when it comes to finding out what the Cheshire Cat is up to and why he continues to murder.
I learned a lot about Alice and her boyfriend Adam in this book, that I didn’t otherwise know. I think that that information is going to help set the stage for how I will be able to imagine the story in my mind, from this point forward. The thing I love most about books is that they allow you to decide how you want to see the story unfold within your imagination. This book series definitely allows for one to use their imagination in order to envision what is assumed to be the authors masterpiece written within the pages of this book.
I look forward to reading on to the third book in the series. I honestly don’t remember what had happened in these first three since I read them so long ago. I am thoroughly enjoying reading them again. In all honestly it feels like it’s the first time I have ever read them and to me that helps to keep the magic of the story alive!
– {Book 3: Circus} – {12.13.2018} – There is so much to be learned about Miss Alice Wonder in this book. The title of the book has true meaning to the plot of this book. It also helps us to better understand Alice and her back history. I know I’d read these three books before but I honestly couldn’t remember anything about them other then they were a retelling of the Classic Alice and Wonderland story. When I’d started reading this book I was thinking that it had to do with an actual type circus kind of plot. Once I’d gotten further into the book I remembered how wrong I’d been to be thinking that in the first place.
Alice really questions her sanity in this book. I know that is to be expected given the situation. However, some of the things she is forced to endure throughout the book would make even a sane person wonder if they were or were not insane. It’s kind of crazy to think about, but the adventure she goes on with The Pillar in this book is for fetched and kind of on the insane side as the book originally entails. As far as I can tell this series is set to make Alice choose whether she’s a good character or a bad one. She is faced with some impossible type situations and those situations even though morally she seemed to be making the right choices, I’m not sure those are the choices I’d have made if I were in her shoes. I’m not saying this in regards to every instance, only some of them.
I also think that for a rather insane girl she shows a crap ton of courage. I don’t think I’d be able to display even an ounce of the courage that she is able to show in these first couple of books. Even though the world seems to be completely and utterly against her, it appears she still has courage to try and stand up for herself, but most of all to stand up for other people. I’m really enjoying getting to know Alice and I am looking forward to seeing where she is going to be going with her story in future books. I am also very much interested in learning more about all the other Wonderlanders that have been introduced so far and hope to be introduced to many more.
This is definitely a series that I am looking forward to trying to read through to the end! It is brilliantly written, it is captivating and it really leaves the reader wanting more at the end of each book! I’d definitely a must read series for any individual that enjoys retelling of Alice and Wonderland.
Hooked by the first chapter. Such an unusual but riveting story. Love how it draws you in so you want to keep reading more. Such an exciting series of books. Can't wait to start book 4.
Insanely addictive and amazing! I love the way it draws you into history with real facts about Lewis Carroll, the seamless integration of Wonderlandian psychosis’s and the ‘saner real world’ madness, and I am STILL quoting Professor Pillar! It is immersive reading at the less and more interesting than not, you start to feel that your own little quirks that are not so sane, seem perfectly acceptable.
I bought this because it was being sold a something the late, dear Terry Pratchett would have written. Couldn't have been further from the truth and I was very disappointed. The storylines are simple but rambling. The overall premise has potential but the execution leaves something to be desired. And then very sad to find that the story doesn't wrap up at the end of the third book. this is really stretching it too far.
I love the "Grim Prequels" this series falls flat for me. I respect the efforts by the author to tie in the ubiquitous tale of A!ice and her friends, but just could not get behind this project. I "bought" the first three books for free, and was glad that I did. Now I know that Cameron doesn't always hit it out of the ball park with me.
Amazing series. Written excellently. I can't believe how much of the behind the scenes like places and addresses, are real. A lot of work has gone into it and I can't appreciate it more. WE'RE ALL MAD HERE!
Through the first three and on to the fourth and so on. Who doesn't love Alice in Wonderland and want to see it modernized? Is Alice actually Alice!? Is she just plain mad!? Are we all!? Who knows? I'm certainly hooked.
Worth every penny spent for the books (n then some) Adventure, madness, and !mystery that keeps you on your feet as you go along with the incredible characters. I can't wait to read the next book!!
So happy to know my definitions of sane and insane are shared by more than I!! Maybe the reason I've not "grown up yet" but I am always on the side of good, as is our matchless heroine in this series. I must have it in hard copy...
This was an amazing adaptation of life after Alice in wonderland and who knows it could be true. Alice in wonderland is one of my favorite stories. Lights up the imagination and this series does as well. Can’t wait to get on with the fourth book!!
Awesomely twisted tales! I love how he writes although sometimes it's quite graphic. I'm obsessed with this story and can't wait to read more! I love that Cameron Jace uses historical places that make me want to dig deeper and learn more.
The second two books of the series do help establish the characters much more. The cliffhanger was not unexpected but I do want to read the rest of the story.
I love the twists and turns and darkness in this mad world. I love the different perspectives and creative thinking... and most of all I love the characters!
A modern, darker version of the Alice tale. Alice Wonder lives in an asylum after killing classmates on a school bus. She helps a serial killer named Carter Pillar find another killer who goes by the name The Cheshire Cat, who is killing young girls. She solves riddles, mostly about Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, and uses references from the original version of the book itself, to find the next girl. As she gets deeper into the madness she wonders if Wonderland is real or if she's truly gone mad. By the end it mad me curious and I was thankful I got the 3 books together. In the second one, Alice and Pillar go after a killer who only called himself a Wonderland Monster. This time the crimes are kid's heads being chopped off and stuffed in watermelons. The end left me cheering and in awe. In the third book Alice and Pillar must find a bomb that is inside a white rabbit. The Wonderland Monster in this one calls himself the Mad Hatter. This one is also personal for Alice, as pieces of her past start to surface. By the end my eyes were wide and I was ready for more. Though watching so many crime shows and movies the ending was surprising and not surprising, but I still wanted more. I won't reveal any more than that, so those of you who have not read it find this review helpful and encourage you to read these books yourself. The author does a wonderful job with putting a modern twist on a very well known children's story. I was fascinated and wowed that ALL the places and facts about the original books, Lewis Carroll, and places were real. I ended up doing brief research of places of my own. As a lover of Alice in Wonderland, this was a fantastic read! I finished it in about 2 weeks. It was educational as well as interesting and maddening. By the end of the first book it left me wondering, is it be real, or has she truly gone mad? It sucked me in after the first chapter. It looks like a lot of research and love went into these books, and I encourage you to read the series.
Insanity: This is the first book in this series and bind up and it introduces the reader to Alice Wonder who wakes up in an asylum, in modern day America, with no memory as to why she's there to be told that she killed all her class mates including her boyfriend in a bus accident. She meets another inmate Carter Pillar who's a serial killer who is trying to convince her that she is indeed the Alice from Wonderland and she needs to help to catch all the Monsters from Wonderland including the Cheshire Cat & The Duchess. I loved the dual perspective of the story (Alice and Carter Pillar) because it was interesting to see how they saw the events as well as what they thought of each other. It also made it that much easier to connect with them. They were both well developed and multi faceted characters who were likeable and believable as were their relationships with the other characters. Although they and all the other characters were well developed because they were so multi-faceted it left room for them to be developed further in future books. The plot was so well developed and intricate that it kept you intrigued from beginning to end. It was written in a way that at times it made me feel like I was actually part of the story due the descriptions that were given. I loved the sensitive and thoughtful way that the author wrote about the subject of mental illness eg. By saying that the people outside the asylum are actually the ones that are mad not the ones in the asylum, but also because differentiation's were made between the levels of madness within the asylum. I would give this part of the bindup a four star rating because although it was a great introduction to the series and made me want to start reading the next Book in the series immediately.
Figment (Insanity 2/6) is the second book in the 6 book series and a great continuation on a really cleaver reimagining of Alice in Wonderland. I still loved Alice and the Pillar and it was interesting meeting the new characters as well as getting to know the supporting characters from the first book better. I found the exploration of what a figment of a persons imagination is and how to differentiate between a figment of ones imagination and reality. This book is aimed at young adults which is totally the right market although I would say that it's a book that will appeal to anyone who enjoys YA fiction as well as anyone who loves reimagining's of well known and loved stories/fairytales. The plot of this book was as fast paced as the first one although some of the the chapters were quite long which is why it took me a while to read the book, because the periods where I was reading the really long chapters I got to the stage where I was wading through quick sand so I had to step away from it. Now I have read and thoroughly enjoyed this book (part of the bind up) on the whole as soon as I finished reading it I immediately started reading the third book (part in the bind-up) in the series and am glad I did. It is for the reasons I have mentioned above that I have given the book a four star rating.
Circus (Insanity 3/7(Insanity: The Complete Books 1-3 #3)) this is the third book in the 7 book series as well as the third book in the bind up and a great continuation to a series that I am going to thoroughly enjoy. I flew through this book because the chapters were an average length unlike the first two books as well as the fact that it was fast paced which kept me interested through out. This book focuses on Alice solving the mystery of her life through the mysterious "circus" with the help of Carter Pillar. It was great learning more about Alice and the Pillar as well as the other supporting characters from the first two books and learning about new characters. I can't wait to see where the story goes in the future books in this series.
I am really glad that I purchased the bind up of the first three books in the series because it meant that each time I finished a book I could just go straight on to the next one. The books in this bind up are aimed at young adults although with the subject matter of the stories adults can also enjoy them as well.
