Gargoyles- Stone statues depicting hideous monsters that are said to chase away evil. What if the legends are closer to the truth than anyone knew? The Obsidian Guardians lived in daylight as statues of their spirit animals and stalked the night in human form. Created by witches as protectors to those families who were entrusted with magic. Families born only to keep balance in nature and save humanity. Audra Ketchum moved to Integrity three months ago to escape her past and find anonymity. Her hopes and dreams for finding a fresh start were not in the cards of fate. After starting college and finding employment at an antique shop she finds herself thrust into a world of magic, conspiracy, passion and murder. Castile, an Obsidian Guardian appointed with protecting Audra, feels that he is always on the verge of failure after the deaths of his last charges. Loyal to a fault, and naïve, Castile hopes that his Troop will find their way back to the true purpose of their nature. To protect the Chosen. Ultimately, Audra and Castile must face their respective pasts in order to secure their future. Working together, can they find love and move closer to freeing the world from the Dark Ones, demons and horrors hell bent on destroying humankind and stealing magic for their own nefarious purposes?
It's rare that you find a novel where gargoyles take center stage, and I really enjoyed the interesting take on them and other mythological beings in the book. As has been noted in other reviews, the book is a little slow getting started, and there are some obvious grammatical errors, but, the originality and premise of the plot, and its engaging characters do go a long way for making up for these flaws. I think if the book could be re-edited, it would help with clarity and pacing, and, I would definitely increase the number of stars I give it. Once in, the book does pick up the pace, and I genuinely loved the closing scenes and finale of the book --- I can't wait to read the next one in the series!
Integrity is a very well written book by a very talented writer. I was engrossed from the first chapter. J.B. Coates was able to make me care for the characters and I feel I could hear each of their voices and I was able to imagine locations quite easily. It is refreshing to see a book where gargoyles take center stage. I am looking forward in reading the rest of the series, and I hope there will be many more books to come.
So I just want to start out by saying, ohhhhhh my goodness! Great story!! I started reading and couldn't stop. I finished the book within 24hrs! Mind you, those 24 hours I had to sleep, eat, and I totally procrastinated on some chores on my day off from work. I can't wait to read the rest of the series! Supernatural type novels usually always center around the same old storylines featuring vampires, werewolves, etc; this book was such a breath of fresh air. This story would even be amazing as a mini series or a movie! Hollywood could definitely use an original idea once in awhile!
I received a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
For me, Integrity took a few chapters to get going and once the backstory started to be revealed, the plot still moved quite slowly.
I really liked Audra and Tracy's characters and would have liked to have seen more of Olivia. I felt there was some character development for Audra - she was definitely stronger at the end than she was at the beginning. I just hope her reliance on Castile doesn't hamper her character in future books.
There were quite a few editing issues dotted about e.g. is rather than his and her rather than here. "The beautiful day that greeted Audra had past." Should have been passed. "They had left Livy at the school to finish up what so things she had to do." Made no sense. "Half way thru..." Rather than through. But all of these are easily fixed.
I really enjoyed Integrity and would definitely read more books in the series!
I was going to give Integrity 4*, but sod it - the promise of better to come! 5*!
