Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards]

Dan is a professional ghost hunter who's never actually found a ghost. But his newest case is promising: a cursed Russian rifle (allegedly) haunted by a demon. According to legend, anyone who touches the antique weapon dies within 24 hours. But for Dan, it's personal — he's still mourning the death of his fiancée Adelaide, and he's desperate to find proof that spirits exist. At any cost.

As the clock ticks down, Dan's paranormal investigation quickly twists into a mind-bending nightmare. He is stalked through time and memory by a terrifying (and very real) demon. And as for his lost love, Adelaide? She might be the only one who can save him . . .

From Amazon best-selling author Taylor Adams, "Our Last Night" is a roller coaster of a ghost story with a bruised, beating heart.

Great for people who love Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Peter Straub or David Wong but really a book like nothing you’ve ever read!

This was unexpected. Exciting, very fast paced. But the subtle underlying idea presented by author, and after having thought about it a little while before writing review, I really love it actually. You'll have to read it, for that to make sense;)

Crazy story too, that should have been more of a silly book, but this author gets it done well and makes it work.

So far, in early 2019, I've read 11 books. Including 2 books by this author, this book and "No Exit". Best 2 books by far. I'll be reading another book by this author soon.

4 stars.

This book was a surprise. I admit I'm not a huge fan of horror, but I am curious about the genre, so I was at the same time excited and dreading reading this book.

So, this is horror, but it's also prominently supernatural. It is also a love story.

There's two tales happening at the same time. There's the race against time to stop stop evil and save oneself, and there's the slow understanding that everything may look perfect when you look back, but that's just one's mind choosing to remember only the good.

The book a little to find its rhythm, but when it found, it made it impossible to put it down. As a result, I went to bed 3:30am last night. I couldn't wait until the next morning, I had to know how it ended!

Also, I think the book dragged at times, a few scenes were unnecessary plot wise. I didn't skip any of them, though, afraid I'd lose a hint or a sudden development, and trust me, they were there, not everywhere, but the twists and hints were there, and they helped build an exciting and surprising narrative. Also, I should mention there's some gore and violent imagery, but if you're a fan of horror, you're already expecting it.

This is book is an excellent read for fans of thrillers and supernatural. The love story is also well written, not annoying or too sugary, and true as the layers are peeled and more is revealed.

I'd like to thank NetGalley, Joffe Books and author Taylor Adams for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dan is a ghost hunter but the only thing he is haunted by is loss and grief. When he purchases an allegedly haunted rifle he is aware of the tragic ends the serious buyers have faced, he just doesn't care. Either he will prove ghosts don't exist, once and for all, or he will pass to the other side and finally be at peace. The rifle might have other plans for him, though.

This was strange, creepy, and unsettling but also tragic, poignant, and sorrowful. I initially thought the reverse timeline would become repetitive and uninteresting to me as I dislike 'Groundhog Day' type reads but Adams kept everything feeling fresh, even when the same ground was trampled over again. Tense is the primary adjective used to describe this read and it was a heart-pounding experience that has become my favourite of Adams' impressive works.

Good old fashioned haunting with an evil entity attached to an inanimate object with an interesting plot !

Brilliant

A very different book this would make a great movie.
Dan is a ghost hunter even if he doesn't believe in ghosts and a heartbroken one at that who is struggling to get over his fiancee.
Dans buys a gun that is said that every owner kills himself within 24 hours.
Strange things start to happen blackouts time travel (yes time travel) can Dan save himself before the 24 hours is up.

Thank you to the author netgalley and Publisher for a chance to read this book.

Taylor, here’s what I think. You and your buddies had a drunken contest to see how outlandish a book could be and whether you could get it published. Mission accomplished (and I actually read every page), so congratulations. But next time, could you come back down to earth a little bit? Maybe a more believable plot? And characters who are all alive? Thanks.

Loved the psychological horror aspect of this book! It was also very visualizing throughout the entire read. It felt like I was right there in the room with the characters. It was a great love story as well as a horror.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

The narration by Scott Merriman was decently performed...I just found his voice easy to tune out...he didn't keep me in the story...even when I had ear-buds in. This is most likely just a personal issue for me, though. Unfortunately, when you constantly fall out of a story it leads to not always knowing what's going on and less enjoyment of the story overall. Especially when a story has a lot of technical time-travel-y jargon. Plus the pacing was so intense...it was almost too intense to keep up with at times.

Despite all that, the potential for a five-star rating is there and plenty of others have given that. There are a lot of elements at play in this book...and the concept alone is intriguing enough to recommend this book...maybe, I would suggest reading over listening, but again, you may really like the narration...it is available as a Read and Listen on KU...so that's always a great possibility for trying both mediums.

I was right! I loved ”No Exit”, so read ”Eyeshot” and they were so fast-paced and action-packed that I had a feeling ”Our Last Night” would be a winner! It was. Where the other two books by Taylor Adams took place in cut off, limited areas with no escape, this one is moving rapidly from place to place. And very different. As before I cared about the characters and burned through the pages. I won’t say more. Read all three!

Thank you, Netgalley and Taylor Adams for providing me this book. It took me too long for the review but it’s better late than never, right?

One Last Night is about Dan, a ghost-hunter who have never seen a ghost! He badly wants to see one so he tracked and purchased a gun that when touched will shorten your lifespan into 24 hours. Well, he touched it. He’s desperate to see spirits now he’s desperate to survive.

Oh holy cow. I think the gif summarized everything.

This was such an amazing book! I was engrossed to read the book just because of its introduction. I LOVE everything in this book: the characters, the plot, the scenery, the writing. EVERYTHING.

I can’t really say it’s visually pleasing because the scenes were terrifying!

Like there would be a jump scare any moment. My heart was beating so fast. SO FAST! Oh my god. Not to mention the countdown. The freakin' 24 hour countdown! Oh my gosh.

I have to admit, this was supposed to be a 4-star rating because of some dragging scenes. But since I loved how it made me feel enthralled, I gave it one more start. Also, the we’re-about-to-die-but-I-really-need-to-make-a-joke type of humor? Hmm. THE BEST. I was frightened but I cannot help but laugh at those scenes.

This book is a perfect read for those who love thriller and some gory scenes and the freaking time travelling. Hmm. Yes.

OMG. An absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. With serious twists and will keep you guessing. I just couldn't put it down. Not until the last page. And wow. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley

I’m not much on time travel books, or fantasy killer characters. This book has both. Dan and Addy’s trek is confusing at times. I struggled to know where they were, and what significance it was to be there. Often, I did not understand what was happening. Prose like “Echoes whispered in the darkness, cobwebs of memory. Like walking through rainclouds of half-remembered dialogue.” The words seem nice, but what does it even mean. I can’t get a mental picture of what he is trying to convey. There are many examples like this. The author tries to keep the pace moving at break-neck speed, but it only creates more confusion. Several times I almost quit on the book, but because ‘No Exit’ and ‘Eyeshot’ were so good, I forced myself to keep going. This book didn’t hold up to them at all. This story is just plainly too bizarre to make up for eloquent writing.

This book is a crazy, fast paced, horrifying thrill ride. I would say it is a is mix of horror and sci-fi. Dan is a ghost hunter that doesn’t believe in ghosts. After losing his fiancé he buys a cursed gun with a long reputation of death because he needs to believe in ghosts and that his fiancé is out there somewhere. What happens next is a mind bending race to overcome the haunted gun and the curse it brings with it.

It is a page turner no doubt, had me hooked from the very beginning. Found the story to drag a bit in between and felt that some chapters could have been removed. Found the ending to be a bit of a let down. The protagonist was dreaming all right. replaying memories and receives a post from his dead wife towards the end which means the dreaming was real too. 4 stars from me. Definitely will read other books of Taylor Adams.

Great ghost story/thriller. Romantic and humorous too. A haunted rifle that causes its owner to commit suicide is the catalyst for this wild ride. Taylor Adams is now one of my favorite authors.

How do I convey my thoughts? This is the second Taylor Adams book I have read in the space of two days. Both 5 star reads filled with so many elements and reflections on life.

Dan is a ghost hunter, he hasn’t actually found one. But he is. He goes to purchase a Russian rifle that allegedly has been the cause of many deaths, all within 24 hours. He has researched the history of this weapon - along with the last incident. Dan’s plan is to document 24 hours with this rifle and use it to finally prove that ghosts exist. However as the time ticks by very strange paranormal events happen in which time travel, facing ghosts of your past and trying to save others from the demon that is within this weapon comes to a head. Can he survive? Can he save others from this weapon?

Dan is a character that is grieving the loss of his fiancée Adelaide. I think what is so interesting about this story is that once the shit hits fan, he has to return to memories and relive them (almost like a ghosts of Christmas past situation). To relive those moments couples go through - arguments, ruining a family get together, the in laws being difficult, the words we use in moments of frustration. So realistic and they really help to feel this connection with both of them. These are all reflected as we journey with him to different years and periods where his fiancé was alive. He clearly is in a rut, willing to risk his life for the sake of knowing. The reflection of grief and life after is something I truly appreciated. I feel the author has been through loss, there are elements in this book that wouldn’t be understood by someone who hasn’t suffered such a loss.

The writing style is fantastic. With both books I could see the story unfold, almost like a film. Characterisation is on point, you get a full understanding of each character and they resemble people you would know in your day to day. The plot and pacing are consistent and everything builds over time. The thriller moments are truly chilling and I could feel my heart racing as the book continued. Both times, I felt I had to consume these books in one sitting. I couldn’t stop.

I would highly recommend this book, No Exit and at this point the author. It’s rare to 5 star two very different books.

Trigger warnings - a lot of horror elements so be warned, animal cruelty (a particular scene is brutal), grief and loss.

Dan doesn’t really believe in ghosts, god, or the paranormal, even though he’s the host of a popular ghost-hunting show. But when his fiancée passes away suddenly in an accident, he desperately wants to believe in something.

He seeks out a notoriously haunted Russian firearm, which is apparently cursed and has caused every previous owner kill themselves. Once he has the gun, the being that haunts it digs deep into Dan’s brain, chasing him through his memories.

This book started out great, completely pulling the rug out from underneath the reader. But after the initial shock, I could easily accept the strange rules in the world and all the tension evaporated. There are some cool connections between Dan’s memories and cases he’s investigated for his show, and the ‘gasman’ is delightfully creepy and threatening.

I was kind of disappointed by the ending. But the wild ride through Dan’s subconscious is exciting and makes this book a worthy read.

If you like ghost stories or paranormal thrillers, then you’ll enjoy reading Our Last Night.

“Grieving isn’t what I expected. You don’t see your loved one’s face wherever you go, haunting you on billboards and strangers. That’s a cliché. The reality is simpler, less melodramatic, and far worse. You just start to forget.”

I absolutely loved this book!

Dan Rupley is a professional ghost hunter who has never actually seen a ghost. Reeling from the death of his fiancé Adelaide, Dan’s search for proof of the paranormal leads him to purchase a (supposedly ) cursed Russian rifle, which is famed for killing anyone that owns it within the first 24 hours of the gun being in their possession. So yea, Dan isn’t exactly handling his grief well.

This book has it all: action, lovable characters, horror, romance, humor, time travel, ghosts, themes of grief, friendship, love and sacrifice. I am going to make it my mission to share this book with anyone that will listen and I’m sad it doesn’t get the hype of some of this author’s other books. If I had to compare it with anything, I’d say it fits in with Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. This was a wild ride that I shirked all responsibilities to read because I could not put it down. Beautifully written and will stay with me for a long time.

Trigger warning:‼️ pretty graphic animal death here, but to say more will give away much of the plot.

I've got to admit, that I did not expect much from this book even though I'm a big fan of the author's other publications, as I am no fan of horror or anything supernatural in books at all.
This book caught me by surprise by adressing grief and the grieving process pretty much like I am experiencing it right now (not going to get me a damn cursed rifle, though) and I started to like it pretty much from the start. The storyline is edge-of-your-seat, don't-put-it-down and maybe read while it's not pitchblack outside-ish so pretty much what I expected of a Taylor Adams book after reading the other two first.
I'm still a bit surprised about the turnout at the end but that is one reason why I so liked this book and the style of Taylor Adams in general. Humorous, dark and full of surprises.

No surprise here that Taylor Adams once again left me spellbound. While some of his newer stories may seem somewhat formulaic (don’t get me wrong, I love all of them), Our Last Night was conceptually on a different level. Adams is one of the smartest writers I’ve ever read, and this book was no disappointment on that front.

Adams has a tendency to detail things in such a unique way. There’s comedy, there’s romance, there’s horror and gore and ethical lessons to learn... Really I wish more of his books were movies, because they feel like they’re written for the theatre. Jealously I am so thankful to read his books and have the film versions playing in my own head, because once again—I find myself wondering how an author can be so creative and leave me caught in his web, wondering how I can escape with his characters.

One final note: I enjoyed the ethos of good and evil as a ribbon to follow throughout the story. I like that Our Last Night acknowledges evil’s existence around us, but ultimately good wins out in the end!

I can now say that I have read all of Adams’ novels, and he is easily one of my favorite writers of all time!

My fourth and least favorite read from this author. He usually does fast paced, suspenseful, anxiety inducing books so well, but despite the fact that this story took place ostensibly within 24 hours, it meandered for me. Books where you’re unsure of what’s real and what’s not, alternate timelines/universes are not for me.

The story of a ghost hunter investigating a cursed rifle, this quickly became something I wasn’t at all expecting, like a mix of It Follows and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It really shouldn’t have worked at all, but the author has a really strong grasp on writing tension and action, then combining it with character.

Takes place within a 24-hour span; paranormal; I started out super intrigued with the concept and enjoying the build up but I think it lost me with the time travel; while it was fast-paced, it dragged a lot, and it was hard to stay engaged; definitely a unique plot and approach though
