Carolyn Keene has written many Nancy Drew mysteries including “The Secret of Shadow Ranch” each book has a different theme the theme for this book is always keep your head in the game and persevere. The author has many examples of this in her book which makes me think this is the theme. First Nancy Drew proves she can keep her head in the game during a situation like the one she had in the airport. Nancy had just met up with her two cousins in a cafe when she noticed something. The girls were talking about the mystery of shadow ranch when Nancy noticed the man next them was keenly listening to their conversation. By keeping her head in the game Nancy assessed a situation and has already started to solve the mystery. Another example is when Nancy persevered. When Nancy got to the ranch many of the ranch hands didn’t like here and tried to persuade her to go back home believing that she couldn’t solve. But by persevering she solved the mystery and showed everyone who she was. Lastly Nancy never gave up and kept her head in the game. When she was in the deserted mining town by listening to the clues and using her head to deduce she figured the criminals were after her. When Nancy was on the run during a rainstorm she persevered by crossing a dangerous river. These examples prove that the theme of “The Secret of Shadow Ranch” is to keep your head in the game and persevere.
