Kate Becker flees the big city chaos of San Francisco to return to her hometown for the same peace and quiet she had hoped to escape from not too terribly long ago. But there’s an opportunity for her to do some good as the local public defense attorney and of course, there’s Blake, her high school sweetheart turned fiancé. As one of sheriff deputies in Whispering Pines, Blake’s job is pretty laid back, so Kate foresees nothing but a lifetime of simplicity and wedded bliss for their future. That is until the local ghost town is picked to be the site of a major new resort, with two developers bidding for the rights to build there.

The residents of Whispering Pines are none too pleased by the prospect of a garish resort, and just as Kate decides to join the fight to save her town, one of the developers is murdered — right on the gaudy gallows he had erected weeks before. Most of the townsfolk are immediately convinced that the crime was committed by a local, and somewhat legendary, homeless man, but Kate knows that Rip is innocent, so she goes about solving the case in a quirky, comical, and slightly clumsy manner. Naturally, Blake is on her side and helps as much as he can, but it seems that nearly everyone else in town is out to railroad her investigation so that the problem just goes away, but Kate is determined to find out the truth regardless of the consequences.

It’s all very cute and sort of whimsical, and I adore how much Kate loves Blake. Their romance feels genuine, and the mystery aspect of the novel is also well-played, keeping the reader guessing until the end. Overall, while I’m not too sure that a real attorney would be so actively involved in an investigation — whether because of ethics or a slew of legalities — this book was a pleasant read.

This was a decent mystery set up in a small mountain town with a plot that centers around a large land development deal in the works for a local ghost town. The characters were developed and the plot was paced well. Overall, this was a decent fast reading cozy. My only negatives were that there seemed to be a lack of a spark between the two main characters and at times the dialogue felt stilted and a little rough - however this is the first in a series and I would read more to see how the characters develop.

Great start to a series

I honestly found this book really funny, I had no idea what to expect when I first started. However it is amazing. I really love the character development, and how smooth the mysterious. It’s not super dark and yet it has a lot to offer, I also I’m looking forward to reading more in the series and can’t wait to find out who the landlord is.

Great read

I love books that keep me reading, this one had romance, humor, mystery and ghosts. Humans that actually make mistakes, know their flaws and laugh at themselves.

Ditzy

I think this is trying to come across as a light hearted mystery with a couple of twists at the end but it was just annoying to read such a ditzy main character

Funny and smart

Dakota and Blake's relationship is full of sparks, laughs, and obvious commitment. It works to their advantage as they "have each other's back". while solving the murder from different directions.
Toss in some paranormal bits and western myth, and you have a heck of a read! Several proofreading errors kept my rating lower.

Ghost Doings

A clever and amusing read!!! The town is built near a busy fault line in California and acts like another character in the story. Kate, our heroine, acts before she thinks at times but somehow comes out victorious---bloody but unboxed. Will certainly recommend Kate and Blake!

A surprising ghost town

What would you do if you knew someone didn't do the crime they were accused of? Kate jumps in with both feet pulling Blake right along with her. A great quick read with intrigue and humor.

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. Kate and Blake are a great team. The action was fast paced and exciting.
Matador the duck was a nice bit of comic relief.
I look forward to the next book. I am interested in learning more about the mysterious Landowner.

Positives - Cute characters.

Negatives - Meh. There were so many times while reading this I thought... what the heck is happening? Parts felt so disjointed. And the ending just sort of happened.
