Dancing Backward: An Adventure in Male Submission

Rate this book
Kelly was rich, beautiful, spoiled and born bossy. For Christopher, she'd decided that absolute submission to her will was the destiny he secretly craved. In any case, it was the destiny he was going to get.

From the moment Chris sees Kelly across the dance floor, he is as helpless as a marionette in her hands...

At a distance, she was impressive; close-up she was lethal. She reminded Chris of Tinker Bell all grown up, with her pixie-cut, white-blonde hair and a tight-cinched lime sweater dress that emphasized reckless curves above and below...

"I'm looking for a guy who will follow my lead--not only on the dance floor, but in all things. How do you feel about that?"

Little does Chris dream what lies in store for him when Kelly makes him her dancing partner--that this is only the first baby step in what will be a prolonged descent into complete and utter submission.

I used to think I was the only guy with a superior wife. Gradually, then, I started noticing that all the other wives in our social circle were also superior to their husbands--far superior--in all the ways that really mattered: charm, grace, social sense, common sense, judgment, wisdom, spirituality, financial acumen, playfulness, dependability, nurturing--you name it!

Gradually the obvious truth dawned--that women are simply the superior sex. I have now learned to celebrate this revelation in every way that I can and to take my proper place proudly at the feet of our ruling goddesses. DANCING BACKWARD is my small fictional and somewhat fanciful tribute to female supremacy, and I hope to add future titles in the coming months.

I enjoyed this book a good deal. Dancing Backward is, as much as anything, an exploration of the power exchange within a dominant/submissive relationship. Kelly holds the power in her marriage with Chris, and both of them like it that way quite a bit. What makes the story particularly effective is how the author switches back and forth between their points of view. We get to see her enjoyment in taking control of their relationship through her eyes, and then we get to see his enjoyment in yielding control to her.

Although enjoyment isn't exactly accurate. They both experience misgivings and uncertainty, particularly Chris who struggles with questions about his own masculinity in being a part of a female-led relationship. This adds a great deal of depth, particularly to him. I found his fight with his own inner desires to be extremely compelling and even pretty hot.

Another interesting aspect of the book is the fact that the power dynamic between the couple is not initially rooted in BDSM. While they follow some of the aspects of a kinky relationship, the play of pain and leather and all that is not really a part of what is at work here. Instead, the book truly focuses on Kelly's hunger and demand for Chris to follow her lead, and his desire to go there.

With this in mind, the book delves into the idea of our sexual appetites and their own power of each of us.

A well written story with despicable characters

If you are into female dominants who despise the men who serve them, or male submissives who take no pride in their service; by all means buy and read this book right now. I prefer dominant women who actually like and care about men. I also like submissive men who have some pride in themselves and in their service.

This book is well written and edited but the female supremacist tone and the characters that I came to despise made for a less than enjoyable read. It's not my cup of tea but if those elements of character and story appeal to you by all means grab this book.

The glut of books currently on the market about naive young ingenues being introduced to the pleasures of being stalked, controlled, tied up, and flogged is fascinating and, I argue, not without a strong feminist/pro-female element (stay tuned for more thoughts on that, or check out my reviews of Sophia Scarlet's Absolution series), but some of us can't help but think that, faced with the insufferable smirking of these strutting heroes (I'm looking at you, Edward and Christian!), any self-respecting woman's first impulse would be, not to melt into a puddle of sexual pleasure, but to grab the little twerp by the scruff of his arrogant little neck, throw him over her knee, and...

But I digress. What I meant to say is that the basic thrust (hehe) of these books is of an (often insecure) woman who finds strength, self-control, and empowerment through sexual submission. Which is fine, except that the gender roles never seem to be reversed. Even in what in my humble opinion is the absolute pinnacle feminist BDSM-tinged literature, Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series, pretty much all the "good" women who engage in that sort of thing are submissive masochists. Which again is fine. Except that the only really "good" dominant characters are male, and, and, and...

And so I was thrilled to stumble upon this little gem of a book about a couple in which the naturally take-charge, dominant character is the wife. Successful, "bossy" career woman Kelly has an arrangement with her shy, unambitious husband Chris: she makes the money, and he keeps the house. Only he's been slacking off more and more of late: instead of cooking and cleaning, or keeping up his art skills and looking for a job as a graphic designer, he's been watching tv and not taking care of Kelly. When he forgets to pick up her at the airport one evening, she decides that she's had enough--actually, they both decide that something has gone wrong with his behavior--and starts training him to become her devoted, completely submissive slave.

I can't say that this is high-style literature, but it is well done for what it is. The narrative switches back and forth between Chris and Kelly's points of view in a very effective fashion, with the focus on their mental states. Chris and Kelly are crazy about each other but still dissatisfied with how things are currently going between them: both of them are aware that Chris is wasting his potential as an artist and failing in his duties as a househusband, and that he needs direction in his life and (quite literally, as it turns out) a kick in the pants. Kelly, who has always been controlling but in a maternal, loving way, is both disturbed and thrilled by how exciting she finds acting out her sadistic impulses. She's also conflicted by the effects of her treatment on Chris: she loves his total submission but can't help find some of his behavior infantile and a touch...unmanly. Chris, meanwhile, is even more conflicted: he can't imagine his life without Kelly and he knows he needs her (or someone's) discipline to help get his life in order, but he's shocked by her cruelty and ashamed of his own spinelessness. He dreams of being a gallant Knight serving his Lady, not a cringing slave sobbing at the feet of a cruel mistress, but he can't seem to pull himself together enough to make that happen.

This is not a long book (it breaks off at a most exciting moment, with promises of a conclusion to come), but it manages to present the complex dynamic between two characters in an unconventional (or IS it????) relationship with humor and sympathy. Readers should know that it focuses more on the psychology of the relationship rather than the sex, but the punishment/sex scenes are not for the super-squeamish. However, if you're looking for a book with a man's take on male submission (the author is a man), this is a great choice.

Quite an adventure.

This is story of male submission brought on by a guy Chris who usually only though of himself first. Then by chance his wife Kelly returning from a business trip and not finding Chris and becoming angry. Kelly sees a woman kick a guy in the ass for not doing his job good enough to shoot her starts her wondering what it would be like to be a dominant woman with Chris serving her. While at the gym the next day she sees a man who is serving another womans every need like having a towel ready after each set of exercises. Kelly befriends this lady (Carmen) who gives her the advice she needs to train Chris and make him into her slave .Before you know it Chris is a complete submissive to her. My only complaint is this book is divided into a sequel and leaves you hanging on what is to happen next.

This is a thoroughly written slow-paced story with enough time spent on build-up and characterization. And the way it started, I felt I would be rating it five stars and would call it a masterpiece. Later on I adjusted my intentions to four stars. By the end I decided to give it three stars. Let me discuss the reason in detail.

First of all, the author either misunderstood his own characters, or had intentions of writing a different kind of story when he started writing it. Because, numerous of the later part actions do not match how they are characterized. Neither wife nor husband. And even though the story is written in ultra-slow paced (it's pacing is also a big issue actually), it still fails to make their transformations logical or realistic.

Even more irritating issue with the story is it's omission the most important detail. The story starts three years into their marriage. We're told how their relationship started and we're told this is an FLR of a breadwinner wife and a househusband. We're not told about the true extent of the current dynamics between them. In fact, in the earlier chapters open up as if they have somewhat a vanilla marriage with only the roles reversed. When the story of the current situation moves, these details are provided and showed to us they already have a pretty one-sided relationship. And we're given those details in most uninteresting ways. No scenes. And not even proper details. Some of the crucial details are left on us for guessing.

Due to this the story has actually skipped or skimmed many of the extremely important scenes. Only in the last quarter there are a few scenes that can be truly considered BDSM or FLR scenes. Instead, too much time was spent on secondary characters (probably for the future parts of the story).

This doesn't mean it's a bad book. My 3 stars rating is for the books that I recommend reading. It's just that it has failed to deliver to its full potential, because the author indeed has great skills of writing. He just created wrong outline for focusing the flow of the story. But overall the story is good and worth reading.

Female supremacy at its best

Readers of FLR, FS, or Femdom literature know the scenario well enough. A male falls for the alluring, sexually dominant female, not suspecting the dangers he is getting into because he is so in love, in thrall to this divine beauty. This is the study of how he becomes her slave and how she and he deal with the issues that come up. And there are serious issues that a domme has to consider in her relation to her slave. This also deals with the slave's feelings of how far does one go in one's devotion and are there limits. Excellent book that helped me understand how a slave thinks about the punishments he is given, and how you survive.

A good and lengthy femdom story based on female supremacy. I'm not a female supremacist devout but I don't mind having my femdom reading tainted with it. It's well written, with vivid descriptions and rich characters.

I didn't rate it 5 stars as I thought it suffered a bit of purple prose, especially at first but it got better as the story advanced. Also, the story is based on a very common and widely use premise in the femdom genre. (A wife is disappointed of his husband's nonchalant behavior, and the relationship suffers. She decides that a change is essential, and goes to a friend who's involved in a femdom relationship to get guidance. Acquired tips and knowledge is then applied to the relationship.) We, readers are witness of the ensued evolution. Like I said, the storyline is very common, some fluff is added to make it feel...different, but the essence of it is the same.

This is the first part of a 2 part story, and I'm looking forward to read the second part as soon as it's released.

You'll find in this story : female supremacy philosophy, femdom, discipline, humiliation, service domination and more.
