A heartwarming holiday tale from the author of A YEAR ON LADYBUG FARM Paul and Derrick have hit their stride with the Hummingbird House Bed and Breakfast, a destination of distinction in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Guests are coming from all over the country to enjoy a Christmas weekend extravaganza, featuring sleigh rides, champagne suppers, holiday concerts and spa treatments. Of course there are a few twenty Christmas trees to be decorated in less than a week, an absentee massage therapist, and--perhaps most distressing of all-- the unexpected presence of three school-age children in the Hummingbird House, courtesy of their saucy young housekeeper Purline. While Purline tries to teach her children, as well as her bosses, the true meaning of Christmas, the lost and the lonely-- often disguised as the wealthy and the privileged-- are drawn to the Hummingbird House. Among them The author of a famous book on miracles who has lost his faith A family secretly on the verge of disaster A husband and wife facing their last Christmas together With the help of a Harley-riding stranger, a series of unexpected events, and the innocent good intentions of their hosts, healing comes to the wounded and miracles unfold, proving once again that at the Hummingbird House you may not always find what you expect, but you’ll always find what you need. “Full of comedy and sentiment” --Kirkus reviews on THE HUMMINGBIRD HOUSE
An absolutely wonderful book! While it had a few difficult and sad moments, it was also heartwarming and uplifting. The children and background stories were additional surprises and pleasures. All that we need in these troubling times to give us hope! Enjoy!
Cozy Christmas book - with interesting characters. Derrick and Paul, the owners of an inn, are preparing for their first Christmas at the inn. The guests are paying a lot to stay at the inn and they are planning a full schedule of activities for them. They are both great at entertaining and welcoming guests....but not as good at doing all the behind the scenes work that is necessary to run the inn. They have an eccentric group of helpers that assist them in running the inn.
The guests arrive and they are "characters". Some have serious problems and have planned a trip to the inn to escape their problems. Others are interesting people who arrive at the inn for various reasons.
It is a nice warm story with a sense of humor and a Christmas spirit!
I recommend this story to readers who enjoy light cozy Christmas stories.
It is Christmas at Hummingbird House and the house is full of guests. Paul and Derrick are their usual over the top selves. The guests seem to need some cheering and on Christmas Eve miracles do happen and wishes do come true. There is even a real live angel to help things along. The book was a quick easy read.
it is Paul and Derrick’s first Christmas offering at their new bed and breakfast, and they want it done right. But the collection of people who check in will give these two inn keepers a challenging time to maintain the holiday spirit in the elegant way they envision. Funny and heartwarming, an easy reading novella with a bit of Christmas magic thrown in.
I have loved the Ladybug Farm novels. This novel features the friends of the Ladybug Farm women who have opened a bed and breakfast called the Hummingbird House. The owners find themselves in over their heads, as usual, but in the end everyone enjoys a merry and memorable Christmas.
This small novel is much more than it seems. Underlying stories emerge and help develop character depth with the overall storyline leading to an uplifting conclusion.
Heart meltingly beautiful and sentimental Christmas story that binds the stories of several guests and reaches back to the Ladybug Farm ladies. This was lovely and touching.
Such a wonderful Christmas read and a great addition to the Ladybug Farm series. I've been waiting quite a while for another Ladybug Farm book and was no disappointed in the latest addition.
As always, Donna Ball's characters are fun, good hearted, friendly and thoughtful, exactly the type of people most of us would like to count as friends. That's one of the main things I enjoy about Ms. Ball's books, her characters are "real" and very good people, for the most part. Derrick and Paul are such fun, always planning things to the nth degree and wanting things to be just so, but then they usually find out that something has again gone wrong.
I loved the spirit and feeling throughout this entire book. It is an enjoyable Christmas read and if you like novels about good friends, Christmas cheer and just the overall love of the Christmas season, you will certainly like Christmas at the Hummingbird House. Even though this is part of a series, I really think they can be read in any order because where some back story is needed, Donna Ball provides that in a short few sentences that give just enough information without ruining any of the other books.
Growing up, Christmas was a time filled with family and friends, a time for telling stories and reliving long-ago memories. As I've gotten older, Christmases have changed as loved ones have come and gone. This funny, kind and sweetly written story reminds me of those lingering, after-dinner talks, of my grandmother's cooking, of friendship and love, of endless possibilities, and of the magic and miracles of Christmas. The characters in this book don't only feel like family and friends: they are family and friends, and I will miss them dearly. I truly hope that someday there will be another book in this series. But if not, I'll be coming back in future Christmases to relive the memories of "Christmas at the Hummingbird House," just as if it were my own home I was coming back to.
