***easy-to-understand guidance about positive & negative effects of a strong will***

“A Woman of Strength and Purpose,” by author, teacher and well-known Seattle speaker, Cynthia Ulrich Tobias concerns strong-willed women. After thirty years’ experience as a strong-willed woman she describes the positive and negative aspects of a strong will and encourages women to channel their strong wills appropriately. Otherwise, she writes a woman with a strong will, is a force for “great destruction” as well as “great good”

She begins with why such women are often described as determined, domineering, self-sufficient, tenacious and difficult to deal with. Yet, she writes, the quality of a “strong-will, in and of itself, is a positive trait.” In addition, “strong-willed” is not a neutral term and women with strong wills often invite extreme positive and negative reactions.

Cynthia writes from the perspective of a woman who has learned the positive and negative effects of a strong will. After she chose to submit to God and add godly inspiration to her strong will learned to “harness the gift of a strong will” and go on to powerfully influence and “impact the world for good.”

She also believes strong-willed women are unique and there isn’t a typical characteristic or profile to describe them, other than they are generally bold and unwilling to take no for an answer. However, when strong wills aren’t kept “in check,” she warns, they become a “destructive force” that results in a “struggle between their dark and light sides.”

Her target audience is strong-willed Christian women and her arguments are supported with extensive use of Scripture. Chapters include surveys, discussion questions and practical tips to identify strong wills strengths and weaknesses and even a checklist to determine “How Strong Your Will Is.”

Chapters end with “Profiles in Perseverance,” which are stories of strong-willed women who learned to submit to God and allowed Him to work in their lives. Their stories illustrate Cynthia’s wise counsel on how to overcome “Three Stumbling Blocks to Surrender:” decision making, discipline and committment.

Filled with real-life examples Cynthia’s practical advice inspires women to surrender their wills to God and live for Him. She teaches how to be with God instead of without God because; she writes, “your strong will is God’s will!” for you. Written in an easy-to-understand conversational style Cynthia’s guidance is well-done, practical and applicable.

This was an excellent read for the woman who doesn't fit the "mold" - for the driven and passionate woman who needs to know that there too is an important place and role for her within the church and Kingdom work. The author does a great job at identifying those traits every strong willed woman finds in herself and the tension in harnessing them to be best used to glorify God. And, "Yes" you can be a strong willed woman and still bring glory to Him! I can't believe wait to r as her book on the stein willed child.

Hands down the best applicable book I have read in a long time! The author provides great examples in everyday lives of other SWW and examples in the Bible that causes the read to think and make sure they are grounded in God and His word! I wish I would have read this book as a high school teen as I grew up thinking something was wrong with me. Thank you for your leadership and guidance. I will treasure this book, my notes and highlights until I pass it on to my 2 SWD ( strong willed daughters).

I stopped at Cynthia's booth at the Homeschool Convention in Fort Worth this year. I had never heard of her, knew nothing of what she was promoting, and immediately saw this book! The cover screamed "I know who you are! Read ME!" I feel like Cynthia and I are kindred spirits. :) This was a good book to read for this SWW. It would have been wonderful to have read it years ago, before I figured out that my strong will is a blessing from the Lord, but it was a good reminder for me. I will defintely recommend it to other ladies I know who fit the "not-so-much" of a mold of the SWW.

This was a pretty good book on how to harness your strong will to work for God, and how to tame it so you can listen to God's will instead of your own. I do wish there was more scriptural support for Cynthia's points, though.
