"As if you can see right through me, into my heart... Always, out of nowhere, you... just show up."

This series is fantastic, and while I have some ideas about where it might go, I'm not sure where I want it to go or whether I don't want it to go in the direction I think it would.

I enjoy the thought of Kosei being able to guide people further into the "intertwining" of music performance now that he has overcome his own personal anguish. It's good that the aim of music isn't personal glory or celebrity, but rather the connection it creates with others.

You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.

”this cruel boy tells me to dream one more time. i thought it was enough; my dream had already come true. i had given up. but you gave water to my dried-up heart. and i’m greedy. you’re making me dream again. dream that someday, i’ll play a waltz…with you.”

oh my gosh this one was so sweet. kousei playing a duet with nagi to show kaori what’s up!! kousei and kaori have completely switched roles! the irony of it all. kaori is the pessimistic one now and kousei is the one to tell kaori to keep playing. kousei’s the one asking to play with her one last time.

I FEEL SO BAD FOR KOUSEI OH MY GOSHHH!! actually both kaori and kousei but kousei seeing his mother in kaori is heartbreaking. this whole story is actually 😥 not ready for the next volume at all..

p.s. my library ebook app only has up to this volume so this might be the end of your lie in april reading for a while ☹️ hopefully they get it soon!!

”why are you saying that? after all your yelling at me, beating me to the ground, dragging me kicking and screaming onto the stage. after all the…all the scenes you engraved in my memory that i never want to forget.”

Nevermind. I regret my words from the review of volume 8. That scene between Kosei and the “new villain” was so beautiful. I promised myself I wasn’t going to cry but my heart is breaking so much. I don’t even have to hear the music to appreciate the artistry of this manga. It’s so beautiful.

The best parts of this series are the sequences when the protagonist plays piano and we jump from character to character -- on stage and in the audience -- as they think about what the music is expressing or revealing about him and, in this case, the girl with whom he is playing a duet. It's heavy-handed and manipulative as the author basically tells us how to feel, and I'm sure it won't work for everyone, but it hits me directly in the right spot.

Also, the love rectangle is firmly entrenched and ready to drive the drama of the final volumes.

I like the idea that Kosei, having overcome his own personal sadness, is now able to lead others deeper into the "intertwining" of music performance. It's nice that the point of music is not personal triumph and stardom, but the connection it brings with other people.

Review for the entire series.

Naoshi Arakawa's Your Lie in April is a finely crafted work that will draw a steady stream of emotion from the barren crust of a calcified heart. It is a tearjerker, but it's actually a well-balanced work of humor, drama, and romance. At its heart, this story is a tragedy and a love story as well. It is a love story about life; and the tears it brings, whether from joy, sorrow, or delight.

I recommend you read this story alongside the musical accompaniment it suggests in its notes. It will increase your enjoyment by tenfold.

Volume notes:
This volume contains my favorite performance in the series; a piano duet between mentor and pupil. It also a joy to see how Kosei has come since returning earnestly to music.

Ok I am so nervous to finish the series. I liked the duo but the question is are they going to be a couple? I mean they are only 2 years apart…

Note: I am watching the anime now! This book got me into manga and anime. Don’t worry I am reading the books first.

''The chilly....dry, still air. The freshly laundered sheets...make his presence softer. This cruel boy tells me to dream...one more time. I thought it was enough; my dream had already come true. I had given up. But you...gave water to my dried-up heart. And I'm greedy, you're making me dream again. Dream that someday, I'll play a waltz with you.''

After an unfortunate start with Kaori, things get somewhat back to normal again with the Kuru Festival. It's fun to see Kosei in this confident role of teacher now. Passing it on, as it were.

I rate this 4.5 stars.

I knew it, almost every volume is making me cry or at least close to it in some cases😭

It starts with Kosei dealing with what Kaori told him at the end of the last volume (although they don't tell us everything she said until later on). I cried a little, but that's to be expected by now when it comes to this series.

I'm surprised with the character growth when it comes to Watari and Tsubaki in this volume. I'm impressed with those two. Tsubaki's trying to be more mature about Kosei going to a school in another prefecture and not being in love with her, even she can see that he likes Kaori.
Watari actually gave good advice to Kosei on what to do. Sure he's still a womanizer but he has his moments.

The performance goes well, I will listen to it in the anime episode in a bit. Kosei is finally going to enter another contest and this time he's a whole different person then before and both Takeshi and Emi are excited.

I can't believe it, I'm almost finished this series, just two more left!😲 On the one hand, I NEED to keep reading, but on the other hand, I don't think I'm ready, Kosei!😭

Like Kosei I didn't understand exactly (at least at first) what the point was in his taking Nagi as a student. Now that he's figured it out we see what a great teacher can do for a willing student.

The duet is perhaps one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, and wish like crazy I could have heard them play it as well. Though I know I can probably look this up from the anime though, I hesitate because I could hear the music at least somewhat in my mind this is so well drawn. I don't know how many people appreciate how much we learn from these images and text. I feel their pain and suffering, experience their efforts and trials, and then bend in to listen to the music on the page.

This is one of the most perfect manga I have ever read. I continue to be impressed.

I might not know how music competitions work but I didn't like how Kōsei puts his partner on the spot, I know his intentions were right, I also see how it all worked out for her but what if it wouldn't have? It's too big a what if for me to ignore. And that other kid, I kinda feel bad for him and it just reminds me how Kōsei did kind of steal his biggest moments too especially when it wasn't even a competition. But in a way there are all really young so you can't really blame him as well for things. They are all in the range of 13-15 I think so I can overlook these small things that keep bugging me.

With this volume, we find ourselves back on familiar ground inside a concert hall, which is undoubtedly where the story shines—just as Kosei and the other performers do. I’m so close to the end now and can’t wait to see where this journey leads. I’ve finished most of these volumes in the past 24 hours, as I’ve found them impossible to put down. Despite having chronic fatigue, I rest and sleep, and as soon as I wake up, I’m right back to reading and filling in my journal. I’m going to miss these characters and the warm feeling I get when I see them perform.

So happy for Kosei to conquer his trauma and not being afraid anymore. And Nagi is just the cutest thing ever. I am being to find this rivalry Takeshi has with Kosei very silly, especially when it’s very one-sided. Like, boy, get over yourself. Emi, I’m curious to see what happens with her.

Hopefully, both Takeshi and Emi get told off by this rivalry they with Kosei, because he doesn’t notice it or care enough to.

This series is so great, and while I have predictions of where it might go, I'm not sure where I actually want it to go and if I don't want it to go where I predict it is heading.
Will finish the series tomorrow.
