A mysterious footlocker washes up on Livvy McKay's shore. Minutes after recovering it she is assaulted by an intruder. Wounded and unable to give chase, she is startled by a knock at the front door. A stranger is looking to rent a boat from her business, McKAY'S CHARTERS. Livvy doesn't believe in coincidences. Especially when the stranger is wearing black−just like her assailant.
Jack Morell is a desperate man. After receiving a cryptic phone call from his uncle−a call spiked with the sound of gunfire in the background, he is frantic to locate his uncle's ship. Warned to use discretion, Jack opts to rent a boat from McKAY'S CHARTERS for his search.
A defiant Livvy grills Jack, but deems that he is not her assailant. In fact, she learns that the trunk belongs to his uncle. Together, they uncover its contents, and now they are being hunted.
Someone doesn't want the world to know what is in that trunk. Someone who is well-connected.
Unable to trust the authorities, Jack and Livvy have only each other. Will it be enough to survive the Atlantic's frigid clutch?
USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller worked in the software industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat and safety glasses, hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines. The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those lengthy airport layovers became writing.
Maureen’s first novel, Widow's TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination in Romantic Suspense. After that, she became hooked on the genre. As hooked as she was, childhood fantasies still danced around in her head––little voices calling for her to write the young adult science fiction BEYOND series. To her, it was still romantic suspense…just on another planet!
Maureen is a wife. A mother of a crazy Corgi. A lover of mozzarella. And she truly believes there is a portal to outer space somewhere in her house.
MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5-4 Stars. This was my fourth book in Maureen A Miller’s Blue-Link series. I discovered her as an author a bit ago and am enjoying her Contemporary Suspense novels, some of which carry gothic tones. I have 1 last book to complete in this series and have enjoyed them enough that I will most likely reread these again in the future.
(1=DNF/What was that?; 2=Not for me; 3=Ok; 3.5=I ENJOYED THIS; 4=I REALLY LIKED THIS; 5=I really loved this! 5 is rare for me). I frequently reread books rated 3.5 or more.
October, the Maine coastline ~ Four days earlier Warren Pennington geological oceanographer, CEO of Pennington Marine Science Center and host for a fringe reality television series urgently calls his nephew and business CFO Jack Morell. Whispering, Warren desperately warns Jack that their research and filming ship is being attacked at sea; he suggests government involvement. Over the phone, Jack hears shots fired and then Warren, the ship and the crew disappear. Jack suspects the worst. He heads to Maine’s coastal area where the local water currents often bring surviving flotsam and various ship debris. Jack needs a boat quickly and believes he knows where he might obtain one.
Olivia McKay, 29 & on her own for the last nine years, owns and operates McKay Charters off Maine’s Atlantic coast. One morning Livi is attacked by a stranger. She manages to fight him off and shortly afterward Jack arrives. Two tall, stern-faced men in one morning raises the hairs on the back of Livi’s neck and, now carrying one terrific black-eye, she wonders what put her in the crosshairs of such violence.
Comments ~ 1) Since I discovered Miller’s writing, I have been enjoying her various Suspense Thriller Romance novels (some of which have a Contemporary Gothic-tone). I appreciate the action/adventure/mystery content and particularly the slow-burn romance, a refreshing change from most Romance Suspense books I run across today. MIST, published in 2018, is bk2 of a 5bk series, Blue Link. It can be read out of order, as I did, and it has held up well over time. 2) I am not a fan of main (particularly female) characters who take impulsive & unnecessary risks. Olivia is an independent person but thankfully she was more help than hindrance in the conflicts that arrived (using unusual objects at hands for defense). 3) Danger/Proximity is one of my favorite tropes. I especially like remote settings with water and/or isolated hazards. Couple it with strong characters who fight to the last breath, pooling their strengths in the face of adversity and I am in for the ride! MIST included several such scenes and I was pulled in from the beginning pages. It read quickly because I wanted to see what would happen next. (The fast pace I prefer slowed down a bit in the middle but soon picked up again, until the very end). 4) I enjoyed MIST. I was pulled into the story and identified with the main characters. I appreciated that the questions lingering in the background were dealt with in the end so the readers weren’t left hanging without answers. I recommend the BLUE LINK series to readers who enjoy: > Action.Adventure, Intrigue.Suspense Romance novels with settings in wild and remote places. > Proximity Danger trope novels > Novels with minimal relationship angst. > Plenty of action. > Strong and independent male and female characters. > Slow Burn Romances with HEAs & minimal/no sexcapades. > Quick reading fiction (possible to complete in a day). > Seasoned male and female characters who have persevered through life’s obstacles to get to the other side.
READER CAUTIONS ~ PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used. VIOLENCE - PG-13. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - No. Kissing & hugs. The romance in the end has a scene which fades quickly to black. No open door intimacy.
Mist by Maureen M Miller is a story that will have you shivering with suspense as well as the cold of the Atlantic Ocean. Jack and Olivia meet due to a suspicious attack on his Uncle’s research vessel. From the moment they meet they are on the run from a threat that they don’t even understand. As readers we get to watch the mystery unravel with the characters.
Miller can always be counted on to deliver an original story with great characters and edge of your seat suspense. Mist is no different. I enjoyed being taken out on the sea and learning about things new to me. It’s always fun to read about jobs or adventures that I would never find myself in on a regular basis. I might think twice about going out to sea again after reading this. 😉
Olivia and Jack’s romance was authentic and built with the story. There are no crazy love scenes in the midst of running for their lives because that isn’t them. They don’t rush into things but think them through. They made it more real and believable. It’s sweet.
The set up for the next book, Dusk, was done quite well. I can’t wait to find out more about Amanda Newton of Blue-Link and Ray!
Mist is an intriguing mystery filled with a nice balance of heart stopping action and calculated escapes so if you are looking for a well written romantic suspense, give this one a read. While it is part of the Blue-Link series, each book can be read on their own with individual plots.
MIST by Maureen A. Miller is the second in her BLUE-LINK series and was another hit with me. The twists and turns of the plot made me keep turning the pages until I was done. The action started in the first chapter and did not slow down until about the 84% mark but I think that was just to allow me time to catch my breath before I was off again with the story.
Olivia McKay is a strong and independent woman. I admired her grit and determination to continue the family business after losing her family. Jack Morrell is a softer Alpha hero than the usual types in romantic suspense but he is all male. He's a scientist with a military academy background which gives him the necessary experience to be the CSO of his uncle's research facility. Their relationship starts out rocky but as they get to know each other the attraction builds. That is something I appreciate in Ms. Miller's writing is that she develops the relationship between the hero and heroine slowly; and I always feel like they have a firm foundation before they disappear into the bedroom.
Amanda Newton is back, although from a distance. I am definitely intrigued by her and can't wait for her backstory. Ms. Miller also introduced a new character from BLUE-LINK, Ray Gorden and I hope she has plans for him in the next book in this series as he also intrigues me. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series.
Ms. Miller doesn’t disappoint in her second round with the mysterious company, BLUE-LINK. As a fan of the genre, I can tell you Ms. Miller always gets it right. Combining adventure, mystery and romance into the binding of a book is what she does best. However, in MIST I couldn’t help but notice that she has gotten a little soft on us. Jack and Livvy feel differently than many of her previous protagonists; there’s an easy kind of love and tenderness between them, which we, or at least I, haven’t seen from the author’s other couplings so soon. It was a welcomed change of pace.
From ominous scenes in Livvy’s home to those on the trawler, rocking off-shore in the cold Atlantic the plot is brilliantly written with plenty of suspense to keep you entertained up until the very last page. Both Livvy and Jack are bearing some scars of the past, which determine their actions going forward through this exhilarating tale. Livvy is strong and independent, without being overbearing. Jack is rugged, yet his actions are truly swoon-worthy. Ms. Miller takes the time to develop her characters into lovable beings for her readers, as well as set the stage for the chilling ride ahead. Every page is appreciated.
This isn’t the first Maureen A. Miller book I’ve read, and it certainly will not be the last. Keep 'em coming, Maureen!
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review free of any persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.
CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS
Olivia McKay, owner of McKay Charters, lives by herself in Sea Lantern Cottage. She is guardian of the lighthouse out on the peninsula. The lighthouse isn't currently functioning but she is working to fix that. As a result of a small locker, sea trash, washing up on her shores, she becomes the focus of an attack and a break-in. The same day, John (Jack) Morell shows up to rent a boat to scan the coastline for debris from one of his company's research vessels.
The people responsible for her attack believe Olivia and Jack are withholding information about what they found and will go to any lengths to find what they are looking for. The two are attacked, kidnapped, threatened, shot at .... the list goes on and on.
Meanwhile, Jack's uncle has gone missing along with the company ship.
Is Jack's uncle still alive? Will Olivia and Jack come out of this no worse for wear? What are the bad guys really looking for? Why is Amanda Newton of BLUE-LINK interested in any of this? You must read the book. Be sure to read Shadow (Blue-Link Book 1). I am really looking forward to Dusk (Blue-Link Book 3)
I loved it. This was my second book by Maureen A. Miller and I love her writing style. The imaginary Blue-Link appears but only as a concerned entity. Olivia and Jack make their own investigation mostly on their own. This is a good story with an intense mystery that plays out through the actions of Olivia and Jack. As with most good romance mysteries, there is a happy ending but you must read it to get the full impact. A very good book. I can't wait for the third book in this trilogy, Dust.
