Rate this book
Detective Jamie Brooke must overcome her personal tragedy and work alongside museum researcher Blake Daniel to solve a series of shocking murders against the backdrop of a divided London. 3 full-length psychological thrillers with a hint of the supernatural.

DESECRATION

Her daughter is dying … and a killer with a fetish for body parts stalks London.

As Detective Sergeant Jamie Brooke copes with the daily pain of watching her daughter suffer through her last days, she is assigned to a macabre murder case. The mutilated body of a young heiress is found within the London Royal College of Surgeons surrounded by medical specimen jars.

An antique Anatomical Venus figurine is discovered beside the body and Jamie enlists the help of British Museum researcher, Blake Daniel, to look into its past.

When personal tragedy strikes, Jamie has nothing left to lose and she must race against time to stop the mysterious Lyceum before they claim another victim.

As Jamie and Blake delve into a macabre world of grave robbery, body modification, and the genetic engineering of monsters, they must fight to keep their sanity — and their lives.

DELIRIUM

“Those who the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.”

Devastated by grief after the death of her daughter, Detective Sergeant Jamie Brooke returns to investigate the murder of a prominent psychiatrist in the old hospital of Bedlam in London.

As she delves into the history of madness, museum researcher, Blake Daniel, helps with the case, only to discover that his own family is entwined with the shadowy forces that seek to control the minds of the mad.

As the body count rises, and those she loves are threatened, Jamie discovers that the tendrils of conspiracy wind themselves into the heart of the British government. Can she stop the killer before madness takes its ultimate revenge?

DEVIANCE

Who is the sinner and who is the saint?

Jamie Brooke is working as a private investigator in the London Borough of Southwark when the body of a priest is found in the ruins of Winchester Palace, his tattooed arms flayed, his mouth stuffed with feathers. Jamie begins the hunt for the skin collector with the help of museum researcher, Blake Daniel, who is haunted by visions of a terrifying past.

As violence erupts, leaving a trail of bodies in its wake, Jamie and Blake must find the murderer before those they love are taken down in the chaos.

I love dark, macabre writing, so this was right up my alley. I read the first three as an audiobook box set. The characters were very interesting and I was invested in what happened to them. If you like dark thrillers, you'll probably enjoy this!

Individual reviews of each book below. As for the box set itself: three intriguing books, beautiful formatting, and great value!

Desecration
After hearing J.F. Penn talk about her "dark" fiction on her podcast and in interviews, I thought I should finally give it a try. This definitely deserves a content warning – Desecration features physical violence, corpse "art," and extreme body modification. Not for the faint of heart. Luckily, I have an iron stomach, so I found the topics both grotesque and fascinating.

As for the book itself, it's well-written and fast-paced, with a strong cast of characters. My only critique is that the writing became repetitive at times, with the narration rehashing past action and/or characters' motivations and feelings. However, this does help keep the details clear and isn't too distracting from the plot.

Recommended for readers who like violent crime, the dark side of medical history, and a dash of the supernatural.

Delirium
This trilogy really hits its stride in book two. Penn gives her characters more depth, and I especially enjoyed learning more about Blake's past and his visions. The theme of mental illness runs throughout, providing both gripping entertainment and moments of deep introspection. I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to finishing the trilogy!

Deviance
A satisfying end to the trilogy. This was my favorite of the London Psychic books, because it gave the greatest characterization of the protagonist, Jamie, which I felt had been a little shallow in books prior. Seeing her cope with her grief and establish new relationships was very fulfilling. I also appreciated how Southwark itself acted as a character, through lively descriptions, a rich history, and interesting locations and events. My only critique of the novel is that the villain was revealed early on, and even so, their identity was not much of a surprise. However, the resolution of that plot still felt complete and contained ample action. Overall, a fun and fascinating read.

I enjoyed these books however I did feel that the first, Desecration, had a rather rushed ending. Almost as if the writer had got bored of writing and decided to end it s soon as possible. The other two books had better endings, although it was fairy obvious who the perpetrator was.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

It's an extremely engaging box set though the crimes Detective Jamie Brooke has to solve are quite disturbing (putting it mildly)...
All three cases involve morally ambiguous and controversial issues: genetic manipulations, insanity treatment and sex trade workers... Jamie herself is on the verge of an emotional breakdown in her personal life and there's also her "sidekick", dr Blake Daniels, blessed (or cursed) with the ability to "read" objects through mental visions...
It's not an easy set to listen to, as all three books take us where we normally don't go or want to go and they make us realize that certain stereotypes, views ingrained in our minds make us ignorant and oblivious to sufferings of those on the verges of what is considered "normal" society... It was a clever move on the part of Ms Penn to make her detective as vulnerable and in a sense so much an outcast as the victims of the crimes she has to solve - it makes her decisions and her need to act much more believable for the reader.
I also like the paranormal/spiritual element present in the books - dr Daniel's gift being an essential part of the investigations. Surprisingly, it doesn't make the books less credible; it just adds strength to the emotional layer of the stories...

Narration by Ms Ashford is really good, though maybe a bit slow - I did speed it up a bit. But she does the voices very well and adds life to the story.

DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Firstly, the narrator, Rosalind Ashford, does a good job of distinguishing between male and female characters. However, here narration falls down on one word: "Something". Although not strongly noticeable she pronounces it as "Somethink". This is fine for the voice of the copper but doesn't work for the aristocracy.

As for the book, Detective Sergeant Jamie Brooke is investigating a gruesome murder and enlists the aid of a reluctant psychic. Actually, the psychic plays such a small role in this book he is hardly worth noting. As for Jamie Brooke she is the quintessential single-mother of a sick child because her bastard of a husband left her. However, the child also doesn't really matter much in the book other than a convenient plot hook later on.

It feels like the majority of this book is taken up by descriptions of cadavers, mutilations, body modifications, and the like. The problem is that after a very short while these gruesome images are so common that they lose their impact and you just float by them waiting for the action to resume.

The conclusion is almost predictable though not disappointing because of that. I will try the next book in the series and hope that it is an improvement on this one.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write a review.

Although I felt compelled to finish this trilogy it wasn't really my type of fiction. I liked the first novel the most but as I continued to reads through the there two tales I felt I was increasingly required to suspend my belief in reality. I know many people enjoy these types of stories and if you like stories about paranormal events and people then I would certainly recommend the first story - Delirium.

The pace of the narrative increases as the novel progresses but each story starts off very slowly and takes a long while to become compelling . I am a pretty fast reader but if you are slower I am not sure you would be willing to plod through nearly the first half of the novel before you become invested in the plot or characters . I was supposedly reading this book for nearly three years, this is only true in so far as I decided to read it but then many other books intervened and I delayed both starting and finishing.

In summary if you enjoy novels about the paranormal then i think you might enjoy these but otherwise I would skip them.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.

This boxset consists of three books - Desecration, Delirium, and Deviance. Each of the books deals with a dark and many times unknown members of our society. These books are gripping, often times pushing the comfort zone, but still compelling enough that you cannot and do not look away. The stories are well-researched and written - not gratuitous or demeaning but creepy and at times, very evil. The MC Jaime Brooke is such a well-developed character that you can feel her personal pain and her, at times, disconnection with others that you root for her to engage [even if it's just for one dance of the tango]. Jaime's bond with Blake - a psychic who is so tortured that he must wear gloves to prevent himself from having constant visions - is heartwrenching.

Trigger Warnings: Rape of an unconscious woman, dissection of the dead, torture, abuse of the mentally ill

The narrator, Rosalind Ashford, is excellent and did a great job bringing the story to life.

These first three books in a new series by author JF Penn deals with prejudice on London in a whole new way generating sympathy and a simple understanding of the downtrodden and despised in life, i.e. the sex workers, the tattoo lovers, cadaver artists, same sex oriented people and the poor.
In the midst of all is detective sergeant Jamie Brooke, generally neutral and hiding her heartache what with the death of her fourteen year old daughter.
That is, till she met a man who has a supernatural talent but with a huge psychological burden of his own.
This box set made me look anew at my own, unconscious prejudices as Jamie sets out to solve murders that in the end only she could actually solve.
Hats off to author J.F.Penn for these dark psychological thrillers that draws you willy nilly into an almost nether world you never would have guessed existed.
Enjoy.

I saved up reading this boxset for the holidays as I had a feeling that it would grip me and then I would not get anything else done. And yes - lots of late nights due to the page turning aspect of this trilogy. I especially liked the obviously meticulously researched insight into worlds I knew little about - body art and extreme tattooing for example. A bit too gruesome for my liking in places, but always within context of the story. A little disappointed with the almost deus ex machina ending of the last book but overall a great holiday read if you like dark crime thrillers with a hint of fantasy / paranormal.

Well researched. I felt that I was walking along the characters as they gathered clues. The descriptions are full and place me in each scene. Some of scenes are very dark and that comes from a practicing Private Investigator who investigates homicides. The arc of the stories moves briskly from one case to the next to the finale. I found them to be credible from a police procedural standpoint and the plots had enough twists to keep me guessing.

London crime thriller boxset by Penn. I really enjoyed reading these three stories, despite the macabre. Joanna's description of everything was very entertaining, even down to O's tattoo of an octopus. There was deviance everywhere and the righteous people who wanted to close down Southwark. I enjoyed the characters of both Jamie and Blake - they seemed very real with all their flaws. A fitting end to Jamie's nemesis.

I enjoyed it immensely. The characters were well drawn. I especially liked the setting south of the river. We visit London regularly and are well familiar with the North side so she has got me interested in doing a lot of walking on the other side.

Fabulous characters, great tension

This package of three books is a joy to read. I read all three in just a few days, because the stories were so gripping. The two main characters are sympathetically flawed, and are just brilliant. Do not miss this great set of novels!

London Crime Thriller Boxset is a great mystery set of Jaime Brooke and Blake Daniel. Jaime is a Detective Sergeant, trying to solve the crimes with the help of Blake. Readers who have been reading the ARKANE series, will recognized Blake Daniel from Day of the Vikings.

In Desecration, Jaime is trying to solve the murder of an heiress found at the Royal College of Surgeon. She is referred to Blake Daniel from one of her colleague to help her when her suspect has powerful political connection. At the same time, Jaime is coping with her terminal-ill daughter.

In Delirium, Jaime is investigating the murder of prominent psychiatrist found in the old hospital of Bedlam. Jaime is also mourning the loss of her daughter. Blake is there, in sending text messages to cheer her up everyday. The only way, Jaime is dealing with the loss of her daughter is to be at work. This time in this book, Blake is discovering his heritage of his abilities when his father passed away.

Jaime is also discovering that there is a shadowy organization operating within the British government. With so much to lose, Jaime's career is on the line.

In Deviance, Jaime is a private investigator, investigating the the murders of tattooed artists and outcasts of Southwark. The serial killer known as the Skin Collector, is leaving his tattooed victims with their tattooed skin flayed. She and Blake have to find the Skin Collector before he claimed another victim.

The London Crime Thriller Boxset is a great way to discover Jaime Brooke and to continue to follow Blake Daniel in this new series. This series does have a supernatural element. Of course, the readers won't know until they have read the third book, Deviance. I would recommend that the readers read these books in order to follow Jaime and Blake's stories. Even if the readers have read any of these books out of order, they will be reading the other books to find answers and to fill-in the blank to see if there is a relationship between Jaime and Blake.

I was given this set of ebooks from the author in exchange of an honest review. I was not compensated or influenced in any way for writing this review.

London crime thriller box set. Joanna Penn

A wonderfully written box set featuring Jamie Brooke and Blake Daniel. Jamie initially is a Scotland yard homicide detective, but due to severe emotional trauma, she resigns and begins her own detective agency. Blake her good friend and companion assists her in all three books. He has inherited from his father the gift and sometimes curse of looking into a person's past. All three books are extraordinary novels, extremely well written. Packed full of action, suspense, intrigue set with a dark twist. Gothic twists and turns. Joanna Penn does extensive background research on all places she personally visits in all three books, as well as current and past history. She has the gift of the Golden Pen!! In this genre, she has no peers!!! All three books are must reads!!!! I truly hope she continues this series!!

A suspenseful read!

These books were a great read. I enjoyed following Jaime and Blake's unfolding relationship. The descriptions were incredible, including Jaime's shattering loss. The only reason I ranked it four stars is because there is a lot of graphic violence, which is very unsettling.

Excellent read. Enjoyed the fact it was bang up to date about London Borough of Southwark. Must be read in order to make sense. Enjoyed immersing myself in a good story line wrapped around places I know. There needs to be a lot more to follow about Blake. I was left hanging in that regard.
