Almost a Lady

Rate this book
In this exhilarating new novel of romance and intrigue, New York Times bestselling author Jane Feather tells the tale of an adventurous young woman and the hardened spy who is unexpectedly–and most inconveniently–captivated by her....

Independent and inquisitive, Meg Barratt wants nothing to do with any stifling society marriage. Meg yearns for the kind of passion that exists only in books–until a violent storm lands her on the high seas with the most dangerous and seductive man she’s ever encountered…or imagined.

For Cosimo, women are objects, to be manipulated for business or pleasure…sometimes both. But when the seafaring assassin accidentally kidnaps Meg on his latest mission, he must reconsider his position. Recruiting his unsuspecting captive for the danger ahead is far more challenging than he expected–and far more seductive.

This book had such a promising start but then it all went downhill. It was boring, trite and at times I had no idea what was going on. Also for a historical romance there was no romance at all, their relationship was bleh.

Ended up skimming through and eventually skipping to the end which was disappointing and surprisingly stupid.

I like Feather as an author. She knows that romance readers are looking for a particular storyline, but she is willing to use the romance genre to tell good tales that keep her readers interested until the end.

Meg Barrett is an unusual woman for her time (and for most regency romances). She is not intending to marry, she has had lovers and plans to have more. However, as the story starts her life is a bit dull. Good, but maybe boring.

When Meg wakes up on a ship at sail, the boring parts have ended. Meg has been accidentally kidnapped. Feather shows us how Cosimo convinces Meg to help him with his plans and how their relationship grows.

Although Meg is an unusual heroine, the romance runs true to form. Feather is a good enough author to carry off this slightly different love story.

This is the 2nd book in the Almost Series; we are first introduced to Meg in Almost a Bride the friend of the main character. This story was just as boring as the first book. Meg is taken aboard a ship by mistake while she is unconscious. The book lacks for me any passion between Meg and the captain Cosimo and storyline, which is the main reason for reading. This book is a total dude, and I would never recommend.[return][return]http://historicalromancemel.blogspot....

No chemistry between Meg and the silly named boat captain, Cosimo. She wants a fling. He wants sex with the intent of using her for intrigue that I could have cared less about. I skimmed the last part and couldn't get any sense of how he "fell" in love with her. And thee illusive Ana? Wasn't even a good foil to magnify any jealousy.

At about halfway through, I’m DNFing. This book just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me? Meg is a sexually liberated 30 year old woman (go, Meg!). She gets accidentally kidnapped, which is weird. Then she gets it on with her kidnapper who wants to use her as a spy with no training. I just really didn’t get the romance and couldn’t suspend disbelief for the circumstances.

It started out well, decent character development. But the historical inaccuracies were atrocious. And when the characters gave into their lust 1/3 of the way through, the tension was gone, so I stopped reading. Not a huge fan.

I'm putting this here because if I don't keep track of these romance novels I will check out the same ones twice without realizing it until I'm half-way through it. This one I can barely remember and I read it 3 days ago.

Here's the thing:

I'm a children's librarian. I start the day by putting on clothes suitable for a nursery school teacher (modest, cheerful, tidy). I listen to inspirational, positive-attitude music as I bike to work, like "I'm going to let it shine" or Brett Dennen's conflict-resolution songs from "Mosaic". I do story time. I act pleasant all day, helping kids & parents find things to read or complete school projects. I am patient & kind & helpful. In the afterschool hours, the tweens & teens attempt to push all our buttons. I reach deep inside for more patience. At the end of the work day, I listen to The Clash as I ride home. I'm tired, and I want a substantial meal because I feel depleted. I eat dessert every night - I never skip! I look at the stack of Newbery Award (or in-the-running) books that I should read. I post something on Facebook, or even answer a colleague's question on Facebook, because I just can't stop. Then I get into bed, and ALL I want to read is lite erotic romance novels with old-fashioned settings and actual sex between adults who also have conversations. I read until I can't keep my eyes open anymore.

Okay, now I remember: This is a story about an unusually independent lady who has actually had relationships with multiple men even though it's only about 1800. She is picked up accidentally by a (handsome) sea captain who is supposed to pick up another lady - a colleague of his who works with him as a spy AND an assassin. He is so desperate for a female colleague, that he decides to train our main character, whose only noteworthy accomplishment or characteristic thus far in life is that she has actually had premarital sex with multiple men before the year 1800, and yet remains an eligible young lady in polite society. The fact that she can ride a horse isn't worth mentioning, because it's insignificant, but it's the one other thing she can do besides read and flirt. Oh, and she is able to look like a stable boy in one scene, and the world's most attractive lady (seducing Napoleon himself) in the next. The sea captain seems to have unlimited access to wealth & is good at absolutely everything. Hence the low rating for implausibility.

Meg-nya egois. Dia meninggalkan keluarga+sahabatnya demi mengejar petualangan romantis bersama Cosimo. Tapi dia berharap keluarga+sahabatnya menutupi alasan kepergiannya agar sewaktu-waktu dia kembali k Inggris, reputasinya tetap tanpa cela.

Sosok Ana yg disebut-sebut sejak bagian awal buku, sampe halaman terakhir ternyata gak nongol-nongol. Jadi terkesan cuma tempelan aja.

Jadinya sampe akhir masih terasa kalo Cosimo cuma manfaatin Meg doank.

Dan endingnya...ampoooooon deh, cuma begitu aja????

I really enjoyed this unique plot. It was the perfect combination of seafaring romance and landlocked adventure. Espionage, intelligence, and coming to terms with new emotions. I really appreciated how intelligent and free spirited Meg Barratt was and that Cosimo didn't try to squash that out of her. If anything, it was at the top of the list of things he loved about her. I did feel like the book ended a bit abruptly, but since this was my first Jane Feather book, I was okay with it knowing that I have Almost a Bride next on my shelf.

I finished reading hoping that maybe it would get better...well it never did. There was very little real romance & I maybe I could have somewhat accepted that if there was some intrigue to make up for the lack. Unfortunately that was not the case.
There were plot holes that you could drive a semi through & scenarios that required a more than usual suspension of disbelief. As if that wasn't bad enough the story just abruptly ended with no real resolution. It's part of the romance genre that you can assume the couple lives happily ever after & there is usually an ending that supports that belief. I did not get the idea that this couple would live happily ever after.
It says a lot when the most interesting character is Gus the macaw.

Almost a Lady was super exciting and well written the entire way through until the end. It was a bit like the author reached a word limit and the carefully developed plot and romance, which had been slowly building up the whole time, very suddenly got wrapped up in an anti-climatic way which left a lot of loose ends. Maybe she’s planning a sequel to finish it properly?

This is a love story set back in the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. The adventurous young lady is Meg Barratt and the love interest is hardened spy Privateer Cosimo. An interesting concept for a spy and his mission. A good read!

Reading this was a waste of time. The main motivation behind them sailing on seas was mentioned, but the book ended without them even arriving on their intended mission. The characters went through a lot of things and none of those were that relevant lol.

Long and winding story that went on and on and ended rather abruptly. Still overall a good read.

Setting: England and France just before Napoleon's expedition to Egypt.

Heroine: Meg Barrett, the best friend of Arabella from Almost a Bride. She's out in the rain and ends up being mistaken for someone else and taken aboard a privateer's ship. By the time they figure out she isn't the woman they meant to bring aboard, they're underway on an urgent mission.

Hero: Cosimo, the captain of the privateer. He's a spy and assassin for England, on his way to Europe to practice his trade. The woman who was supposed to come along on this journey, his lover and partner Ana, was to have been an integral part of this mission, and without her, the likelihood of his being able to escape afterwards alive is much diminished. As he comes to know Meg and sees how strong she is, how steady her nerves, he gets the idea that maybe she can step in for Ana.

There's a problem, though. Meg has scruples, and killing isn't something she condones. Knowing this, Cosimo lures her along on an adventure, hoping that by the time she's past the point of no return she might come around.

Initially intrigued by the idea of doing something more interesting than husband-hunting or sitting around her parents' country estate, Meg is enchanted, until she finally begins to realize what Cosimo does, and when she realizes he's deceived her, she's devastated.

But the mission must go on, as must the romance. Will Meg let Cosimo go alone, knowing that his chances of surviving the mission are none and nil without her? Since pretty much anyone who knows a little history knows what the outcome of Cosimo's mission must have been, there are still some surprisingly tense moments towards the end. In all, a good read.

Awalnya nih crita bagus..

Sempet ngebut mpe pertengahan, until malam pertama mereka.MP mreka menurutku cukup aneh dan membuatku bertanda tanya.I mean,Meg emg cuman gadis desa,tp bukan berarti dia cewe gampangan. Then to conclusion wkt MP ma Cosimo seharusnya dia masih V,but how come Cosimo doesnt bring it up?

Berdasarkan novel HR yg saya baca seharusnya Hero-nya bakal 'dikit' surprise dapatin cewe yg keliatannya uda expert banget (since Meg cepat kale memutuskan bobok ma dia),pdhl ternyata dia masih V.

Meg yg cepet kale menyerahkan diri saja uda bikin aku kaget,tp dia emg suka petualangan,so bisa aja sih..Mengingat dia uda mo injek usia 30.

Cosimo?Dia punya misi.Aku ndak gt jelas ma misinya, krn nih novel bnyk politik. And I HATE that..It's HR!!

Banyak halaman yg saya skip, becuz too boring.Dari halaman2 yg saya skip,i found sumthing weird too..

Pertama x Meg ngilang, ada dicritain Bella ma suami+ortu nya Meg sibuk banget, krn peduli ma Meg.Emg ada surat yg dikirimkan ke mereka.Tp info-nya dikit buangeeettt.

And ending nya juga ndak gt jelas.Meg balek ke inggris ndak sih??

I'll admit that this novel surprised me a bit. It'd been so long since I picked up a historical romance that I've almost forgotten the formula to them. I've read a couple romance on the sea with a pirate, privateer, spy, etc. They're all so similar to each other, I must say. I'm not exactly sure what about this novel appealed to me. I've read a few Jane Feather books and though them decent, and so is this one. It wasn't at all what I'd expected so maybe that's why I could enjoy it. I liked the adventure that the main characters went on. It moved along at a good pace. Howeve, the descriptions were extraneous. I skimmed over most of the long passages and boring dialogues.

The plot was consistent, although it ended on a rather abrupt and hasty note. I find that most novels in this genre have that kind of unsatisfactory ending. I am curious though about what happens with Cosimo and Meg. Now that I've finished it, I can't point out anything that makes the novel stand out but it was a decent read when I've got nothing better.

Baru sampe hal 478, tapi bawaannya makin berat utk menyelesaikannya. Namun Jane Feather bikin gw langsung ilfil, pdhl baru 2 novel dia yg gw baca. Ga lagi" d kyanya. Susah utk dinikmati. Berharap ja nih novel bisa gw selesein, ga seperti sebelumnya, yg klo gw d males, bnr" gw tumpuk doang dirak buku paling bawah. Hiks.... T.T

Menyesal sangat gw bacanya, n menyesal sangat sudah membelinya. Awalnya yg membuat bosan, pertengahan bab yang makin menyebalkan n puncaknya ending yg sangat mengecewakan >o<

A bit slow... More of a pirate story than a regency romance since a great deal of the story takes place on a ship.

I skimmed through most of the middle and end because I wanted to know what was going to happen.

Too many details about the mundane fill in the pauses. They eat, dress, sleep, wake and so forth more often than exciting things happen.

And much of the story takes place in the character's heads as they mull over their options, objectives and decisions.

*Spoilers follow*

Odd that the hero is supposed to be an assassin but in the course of this story he doesn't kill anyone.

Once the mystery of the hero's mission was revealed (kill Boneparte), it was obvious he would fail. If he had succeeded, the entire course of history would have changed.

Even so, the H and h are perfect for each other. No proposal of marriage though. I guess that is to be assumed.

The middle to nearly the end of the book was decent in that is was fast paced and more action oriented, however the beginning was somewhat forced like she was pushing a pen across paper without any joy or sparkle. The plot sounded exciting, but could have been executed better. It wasn't a bad book per say, but it seemed somehow lacking especially in the beginning. I can't say I was totally satisfied with the ending, just as I was put off some in the beginning by the writing. The author's word choice in some instances annoyed me. The middle of the book is what saved it, because for some reason it seemed to flow better and sounded more realistic. I am not sure that if will attempt reading anything else by the author.
