Adaptation #1

Adaptation Book 1

Rate this book
Carmella was still a teen when the Motherships first appeared dotting the skies over the Earth. For years the world tried to normalize while the silent Motherships hovered. And then THEY arrived, promising that they meant no harm. But within ten years eighty percent of the world’s population would be wiped out.

Including everyone that Carmella loved.

The ‘blobs’ took those that survived to another planet called Earth Two. But Carmella was an Earthling and she would kill the hated monsters that had destroyed her world before she would allow them to take her.

Carmella settled into a lonely existence on the now desolate earth—all alone except for her wolf. And then she sees it hiding, watching her—maybe to capture her and remove her from the only thing that she can still call her own--her world.

But Bilal is not like the other Centaurians. He is fully aware that he will never be like the humans that he’s grown up with. Earth is the only home he knows and he feels that he is just as much an Earthling as any human. Shunned by his own kind, Bilal travels the Earth trying to capture an essence of the life that he could never be a part of and a world that would never accept him.

When he sees the black woman living all alone his curiosity gets the best of him. He can not stop himself from watching her, and secretly growing more attached to the human. Bilal’s quest to become human brings him to a decision that will forever change the course of human-kind. In an attempt to ease the woman's loneliness--or perhaps a need to recreate himself, Bilal impregnates the woman with his Alien DNA.

In my opinion, this has to be one of the best Interracial Romance/Sci-Fi novels of the year! Not only was it captivating, but it was highly imaginative & well-written.

Simply put, I loved it! The world-building was incredible, so much so that I felt like was actually there with Carmella, Bilal & Raj.

Pepper Pace definitely has the goods.

Giving this one: 5 spectacular stars!

Adaptation is dedicated to the memory of Octavia Butler. I wasn't sure what to make of either the dedication or the book's forward, but as I got into the heart of Adaptation, it all made sense. This book isn't a traditional romance novel (not even in the sci-fi or paranormal sub-genres), but falls into that gray area where genre types collide. Adaptation tells the story of a one very alien species falling in love with a lone human woman. I was surprised by this story because it exists very comfortably outside of the "romance" box, yet it can also fit quite comfortably there. Pace is a beautiful writer and she does a marvelous job exploring themes of genocide, social restitution, forgiveness, alienation, loneliness, and family. And then she throws in a very unique romance on top of all of that.

A great read! My only disappointment in this novel is the ending. Adaptation basically ends with the beginning of the second book of the series, and thus this book feels very incomplete. If Pace had ended the book a little sooner and without the cliffhanger, I think it would be a stronger read. But that's the only downside of reading Adaptation. Otherwise, I loved the characters and I loved their journey. Pace made Carmella a little cray in her loneliness and I thought that was very realistic. Her isolation from has warped her a little, her hatred for the aliens that inadvertently caused the end of the world is also framed so that it makes perfect sense. I liked that Carmella slowly becomes acclimated to the presence of the alien. Bilal was a great character as well, flawed as any human. I loved how he develops over the course of the novel, and the transition in the end that marks a kind of evolution. It almost reads like Bilal transitions from adolescence into adult hood and that's very crucial for the novel.

Overall, again, a great read and I will be looking for more from Ms. Pace.

This book was great. I honestly took a look at the synopsis and was like, no thank you. Then I thought back to every book I said I wasn't going to read by her and did. Hero's with serious disabilities that she made sexy because she made you look at the man in WOS and not just his disability.
In Juicy, she gave me the ghetto girl with the serious attitude and the homeless man and made their romance as beautiful as any other because she showed you the people behind the stereotypes.
So I settled in with Adaptation and could not put it down. The heroine, Carmella, whole world has been destroyed by Centaurians, an alien race. The Centurian hero, Bilal, identifies with humans and wants to reach out to Carmella. He eventually does and Carmella reacts accordingly.

TW/CW: Death of a spouse, death of a child, forced IVF, animal death, kidnapping, gun violence, attempted rape, blood, gore, animal attack, mention of suicide, cliffhanger ending

Okay, I’m super torn about this book. The sci-fi aspect is great! Super original alien mythology and post apocalyptic scenario. I felt and empathize with Carmella. I laughed with her, I cried with her, the whole 9 yards. And her and Bilal (the alien turned human) are super cute once they start to feel comfortable around each other and a live or death situation brings them closer together. But

Other than that I really enjoyed it!

I have stopped typing out reviews mainly because it's annoying to me on the ipad (I'm old school and need a keyboard). I try to have enough "shelves" to give books a decent review. Also, usually Pepper Pace is hit or miss for me. Loved, loved, loved Beast. The rest, meh, they were ok. However, I felt this book was different enough it justified my one finger misspellings on the ipad. Here goes: I was reluctant to try this book and it took me a minute to get fully involved, however, I was shocked to find I enjoyed it. Enjoyed it to the point of "I'm at 81% and although I have housework to do, I need to finish this" kind of enjoyment. It was not over the top, didn't have overt sexual content, and the emotions of both Carmella (human-heroine), and Raj (alien) were realistic and understandable. It also pointed out the fact that humans are social beings and although some would deny it, even the most depraved crave contact, communication and touch. Those are as basic of needs as food and water sometimes. I would definitely recommend this book, however, it has to be to someone who enjoys sci-fi. Those who don't enjoy that genre will not like the book (and we all know I love sci-fi!!). TTFN-Elise

I devoured this book and for good reason. It surprised me and is a much more philosophically and physiologically submersed, intricate story than the genre typically offers. It is a masterclass on world building, and character development that makes you care. It's a story about grief, finding yourself, and love. So, how much will you care? Well, the story revolves around a Alien blob with tentacles and A black woman surviving on a post apocalyptic earth and in the end, my heart was FULL! The author took her time and developed these characters and all their actions and motivations make sense and rings true because that's what a real person would do.

I can't recommend this series enough. I look forward to seeing where Pepper Pace takes me next. Adaptation has made me an instant fan.

An alien nation, the Centaurians, wiped out, not on purpose, almost everybody on earth. Few humans survived. Even fewer fought to stay on earth. An alien born and raised on earth, Bilal, decided to stay there too.

I enjoyed the plot, but I think I would have liked it better if I haven't read Dawn by Octavia Butler. Bilal looks too much like Nikanj, especially in the beginning, that ruined it for me.

The love story is nice but it takes a tad bit too long.

Review originally published at: http://www.lomeraniel.com/audiobookre...

I was offered a copy of this book in audio format by the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

The Centaurians, called 'blobs' by the humans, arrived one day in their Mothership with no bad intentions, just sharing, learning and teaching. Their world was destroyed and they were seeking for a place to live. But ten years after their arrival, a deathly virus wiped out eighty percent of the human population. The remaining humans were taken by the Centaurians to a new planet, which they called Earth Two, where they could be surveyed by the Centaurians to try to avoid all the mistakes the humans are prone to.

Carmella is one of the humans that survived the virus, but refused to be taken to Earth Two, distrusting and hating the 'blobs', she reclaims her life on her planet, even if she has to make it alone.

The idea of this book was original, and the characters were quite developed. Even though this is considered a science-fiction book, the focus is on the characters, their evolution and their relationships. I enjoyed how natural and complex they felt. I had troubles liking Carmella though, she is bitter, stubborn and distrustful. On the other hand, Bilal is kind, even too much at the beginning of his relationship with Carmella. Nevertheless it is amazing how their relationship evolved, and I am glad I could witness it.

I missed more science-fiction in the book, and I found some of the details vague. When Bilal is talking to his friends in the first half of the book, it is not clear if they are in the Mothership or Earth Two. I guess it was Earth Two, since I don't think humans had a lot to do in the Mothership, but it seems he can go to Earth and back quite easily. Is Earth Two far? Do the Centaurians have FTL travel? Bilal's pod is mentioned, but Pace did not explain how they travel to Earth Two, since the Mothership has to stay hovering over Earth. I also found a bit far-fetched the explanation about why it had to stay there, and I found it hard to believe that the Centaurians did not come with another solution to the problem they were trying to solve like this since their science was almost magic (to my eyes).

I am not too keen on romance books, but the one in this book is not too overwhelming, since there is a bigger story at hand, so it felt fine. Be warned that there are several explicit sex scenes which may annoy some. I was okay with it, but in this case some did not add much to the story. And the word 'penis' appears many times in the book, so many that I couldn't help noticing it. I think I would have eliminated some of those mentions and include more variety in the sex scenes.

I really enjoyed Steve Jay Cohen's narration. It was the perfect for this book and he impersonated both Carmella and Bilal in an impressive way. Listening to him felt like listening to two different people with their motivations and problems. He was energetic when interpreting Carmella, transmitting how powerful her personality was, and very smooth when interpreting Bilal, a lost alien just wanting to win Carmella's heart.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to listen to a love story with a different twist. No need to be a sci-fi fan to be able to enjoy this one, since the science-fiction is quite loose.

Book three and a half stars, narration five.

Sci-if romance with a strong black female lead, sign me up every time!! One of the things that intrigues me most about science fiction is the character’s thought process and decisions on how best to survive. Carmella is alone, living in post apocalypse earth. She is strong and self sufficient and She seldomly allows herself to sit in the grief that she still feels for all that she has lost. Bilal is WILD, a free-spirited alien to say the least, he honestly reminds me of a male hippie alien version of Ariel from the The little mermaid :). I enjoyed watching Bilal mature and truly seek to gain understanding of Carmella. He started to take responsibilities for his mistakes and he found something live for, he found his purpose. This book takes you through of variety of emotions from curiosity, to sadness, grief, anger, and hope. Call me sentimental, but this book was inspired by an Olivia Butler novel and there’s just something about a black woman being inspired by another black woman that makes me smile.

Overall I really enjoyed this read and I plan on reading book two.

What an absolute creative and imaginative story!

Carmela caught the curious eye of a Cenraurian. Bilal was completely enamored by the human. His curiosity almost got him killed when she saw him and shot him. With his abilities of regeneration, he not only healed himself but her as well after being attacked.

For twenty years, she survived on Earth alone except for the sporadic companionship of Wolf.

Bilal felt sorry that she lived alone and had all that she loved. In an effort to give her a gift, he ended up really messing up. He had to make amends to her for what he did. The changes he made to himself ended up showing that living beings make adaptations to their life in order to survive.

I enjoyed reading this post apocalyptic survival story in how one human woman adapted to life with a modified Centaurian.

When I see the abusive way we treat humans to many animals, being beings who feel and have a degree of conscience I am disappointed.

How would aliens treat us if they came to earth with much greater advances and level of consciousness than ours? What would we feel for them?

Pepper Pace's book "Adaptation: Book I" has a good ending case. Just as today many of us make animals our company, in this case an alien sees a human being as his equal, in every way. And he fell in love with her....

Will we ever change with the beings we consider inferior to us?

Pepper Pace has done it again (for me at least)! Pace just has a way with her writing that speaks to me in a way that even I don't understand. I keep going into her books with my expectations low since nothing can compare to 'Angel Over My Shoulder', but she stuns me every time and I love that!
We have Carmella, that "last" woman on earth, and Bilal, an alien with human qualities. Their relationship is a rocky one at first but slowly Carmella learns to open up and adapt 😉 to Bilal.
It ends on a cliffhanger and I'll definitely be reading the next book to see how this ends.

GREAT Adaptation!!!

Like many other readers, I could not put this book down. This is my first novel by Pepper Pace and I am soooo glad I purchased this book-worth every penny. That being said, aside from a few typos, I truly have nothing to suggest and/or add to this book. The author did a phenomenal job on plot, character development, and pacing. I did not get bored at all and I am highly looking forward to reading book 2.

What a great story with such depth and detail. This depiction of our first alien contact is quite unique and I couldn't predict this outcome.
I liked Carmella's strength. She's a survivor and sticks with her principles of not wanting to leave Earth. Bilal is also very interesting not what you'd expect of a typical alien character.

It took a looooong time for Carmella to trust Bilal (maybe too long).
I can't wait for more...

Universally Phenomenal

This book was absolutely AMAZING. I didn't expect much of it and it started off a bit slow, but man did it make up for it later. I could not stop opening Kindle reader for a second. I can't wait to see what the next book has to offer! Five out of five thousand percent would recommend.

Fresh and original!

I enjoyed this author's vision. I don't want to reveal anything, but I will say that the parts of the setting that are familiar just make the events resonate with more power. I don't usually read romances, but this one was worth the departure. Bonus points for the audio version being available. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!

Wow, just wow.

This was not what I expected. The heroine was amazing. She endured so much and her reactions to everything was spot on. Realistic reactions. I could feel myself responding in the sane way. Yes, fear and anger. Wanting to kill when everything was taken from me, and then getting something truly unexpected. Read the book to find out. Excited about the next book!!!

This was... interesting. A sweet story, but I don't think the author was well prepared to write sci-fi. The "scientific" explanations for things that happened were sorta vague and hard to understand and/or picture. I had to force myself to not question anything too hard.

Was extremely good storyline. At first I didn’t like that the alien was a blob instead of more human looking, but that was rectified by the middle. Cute story with a great sci-if aspect to it! Going on to start book 2!
