Betrayed by a lover, Jamie rents an isolated cabin on Lake Huron, wanting only to be left alone. Instead, he is pulled from his solitary existence as an artist and tumbles headlong into the legend of Saint Nicolas.

As a young man, Nicolas accidentally killed a man intent on murdering three children, only to have the man's malicious spirit rise up against him. Fleeing through the centuries from the Krampus, the evil troll-like creature that dogs his steps, Nico finds refuge with the young artist who takes him into his home and bed. But Jamie has questions. Who is Nicolas, and why does the Krampus want to destroy him?

When the Krampus begins to torment and torture anyone Nico comes in contact with to punish him, Jamie’s life is put in danger. And Jamie isn’t sure whether he can help Nico defeat his nemesis or if he’s merely a pawn in the Krampus’s game.

After growing up in California and spending the first ten years of marriage in Colorado, I now live in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with my incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours I spend hunched over the keyboard letting my characters play.
I have to say, Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house while it pours rain outside, a fire crackles on the hearth inside, and a cup of hot coffee warms my hands, which kindles my imagination.
The intricate and fragile nature of the mind is always fascinating. Having worked with the public through various careers I’ve come to respect the resilience and strength of the human spirit. I’m always trying to capture that spirit in my writing.
Currently, I work as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for me. When not writing, I can express myself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

Due to personal reasons, I no longer review books that get less than three stars from me. In order that I can remember why a book didn't work out for me, I've decided to file them accordingly. Meaning, I had to extend my shelves substantially.

A few choice quotes for your perusal

He swallowed, admitting to himself he’d spent too much time alone if he lusted after a sick man.

He jumped at the harsh tone, dismay stealing his happiness at having Nico there, filling his day. Men were rarely kind to him. He blinked at a sudden sting of tears and stood, not wanting Nico to see his hurt. An unexpected tug on his wrist pulled him down, and he sprawled awkwardly against Nico’s chest. Strong arms went around him, and before he could think, Nico had pushed him on his back, his lean body half covering him. Warm kisses trailed over his face and Nico’s voice in his ear sent a shiver of pleasure through him. “Don’t cry, little angel. I was a brute. I’m sorry.”
“I don’t understand. I only wanted to help.” Nico’s gaze dropped to his mouth and Jamie’s heart fluttered, aching for the kiss he knew was coming.

“Of course.” Jamie pushed up and Nico let him go this time. He made it to the kitchen before the hurt swelling inside him brought a stifled moan to his lips. Desperate for a distraction, he struck a match and lit a burner on the stove. Copper pots hung over his head, and he soon had the soup warming on the tiny flames. He tried to ignore the tears blurring his vision, but Patrick’s words played over and over in his mind, cutting into his heart.

“Will I ever be enough?” he whispered to the melting lump of rice and chicken. Twenty-seven years old and he’d never found anyone who could love him for himself. He wasn’t expecting love here, but it was hard to deny his heady attraction to his guest. Swallowing his self-pity, he hoped a stray tear didn’t make the soup as bitter as his thoughts.

Nico caught his breath, spellbound. He’d seen lots of artists at work, but Jamie’s beauty in that moment of inspiration stirred his heart. His flawless skin glowed with passion, his full lips parted as he mixed paint on his palette. Nico groaned inwardly, imagining that luscious mouth on his cock. For an instant he let himself believe he could take Jamie as his lover, explore the sensitive places on his body, hear his moans of pleasure and sighs of sweet release.

“Grazie.”
They stared at each other, Jamie’s eyes widening until Nico saw the yearning he struggled to hide. His heart thundered. Cristo! He wanted to take what was offered, lose himself in the joy that was his Jamie. But what kind of life could he offer him? What evil did he dare bring into his home? No, this dream wasn't for him. He had responsibilities and his own demons to slay before he could give any man his heart.

His Jamie.

Author Dianne Hartsock whisked me away on an adventure of yesterday and today, about men both sturdy and fragile, with souls, both good and evil. My lasting impression of Nicolas: characters in fiction are not always what they at first seem.

We first meet Jamie, emotionally damaged and seemingly defenseless. But as he journeys through pleasure and pain—in mind and body—we learn that Jamie is fierce, if not physically strong, and he is steadfast in the face of his own fear.

Piter—enticing, with piercing emerald eyes and long blond hair—calls to Jamie’s most sordid needs, but he is a paradox, as well. While stunningly beautiful and attractive, he simultaneously repels.

And then there is Nicolas… Older than time, yet a virile young man, he appears as powerful as Jamie looks fragile. But Nicolas is needy for the inspiration to continue his fight against evil and is emotionally breakable.

In Nicolas, Dianne Hartsock cleverly weaves a story in which evil comes in a beautiful package, power is relative, and heroes can be strapping or diminutive. The visual images of Christmas that Hartsock creates are charming—what a great holiday read this would be. And then there’s the cover… it is one of my all-time favorites!

I highly recommend Nicolas by Dianne Hartsock. Don’t miss this enchanting novel.

I’m not the sort to start off with a summary of the book. If you want that, read the blurb. I’m much more interested in getting right in to what I liked and didn’t like about this book.

I have to start by saying this is not my favourite of Dianne’s books. That’s not to imply it isn’t good, just that I personally prefer others. I was introduced to Dianne’s work through ‘Alex’ and ‘The Shed’, and I suspect they will always be my favourites. If you haven’t read them, drop everything and do so now. For me, they were perfect, with spine–chilling horror, deep love of many kinds and a plethora of complex characters (and of course the torture – wow).

Nicolas was an altogether gentler book. Although there were moments of suspense, horror, and a pretty nasty character, it never had the emotional brutality of the other books. They were like being punched, this is more like being tickled mercilessly. Not that I don’t like being tickled, or that I don’t like this book, because I do.

Jamie falls in love extremely quickly, as did Nico, although he fought it long and hard, and some of you might be put off by this. Some people believe insta love is impossible and get impatient with it. I, on the other hand, think insta love is perfectly possible, and perfectly understandable in the context of this story. Go with it.

Jamie was in a constant state of confusion throughout most of this book, and I don’t blame him. Although we had a pretty good idea of where was going to go from the start, we really didn’t – if that makes sense. There’s so much more to this book than the re–telling of a myth translated to modern times.

True, the story was a little slow in places, and there were times when I thought it was building to a crescendo, but it didn’t. However, I was kept on the edge of my seat and Dianne did what she does so well – she throws in horrifying images to stir the pot and explanations come much later.

My favourite part of the book without doubt was the end, and no, that doesn’t mean I was glad to finish it. When the crescendo did build to a climax, it was an explosive one, and left no loose ends. I found myself with some sympathy for the bad guy, but still more than happy when he got what he deserved.

All in all this was a very satisfying read. There are moments of horror, moments of sweetness and, although it’s not quite an edge–of–the seat read, it pulls you along nicely.

A great Christmas Read

One too many bad relationships has Jamie saying goodbye to the city and hello to a cabin in the wilderness. Determined to embrace his time away from other people, his solitude is instead disturbed by the arrival of a man in desperate need of help. Nicolas has been running for so long it sometimes seems like he’ll never be able to stop and meeting Jamie certainly wasn’t part of his plan. The connection between them is instant and too strong to ignore but Nic is a hunted man and he’s determined to keep Jamie from harm, even if that means losing him altogether.

The premise of this story was excellent and with the all the trailers for the Krampus movie playing, I was really looking forward to diving into this book. The reality of the story unfortunately failed to live up to my expectations, however. The beginning of the story showed promise but things quickly became repetitive. Nic and Jamie basically declared their love for one another less than 24 hours after meeting while Jamie has unknowingly been drawn into Nic’s conflict with the Krampus. From that point forward it was mostly as follows: have a small run in with the Krampus, have sex, go to sleep. Rinse, lather, repeat in any combination of those three things while occasionally throwing something else like painting or eating into the mix. I just wanted so much more. I understand Nic being beaten down by how long he’s been dealing with the Krampus but Jamie had such determination in him that I wanted to see him kick some ass! I kept waiting for him to go all Buffy on someone but it sadly never happened. There also didn’t seem to be any actual climax to the story (sex aside); things would start building up and then would just kind of deflate like someone letting air out of a balloon. I don’t even want to get started on the Krampus: he was more horny than horror. The ending was by far the best part of the book and there were no loose ends left so at least it finished well but I honestly can’t see myself reading this one again; I just feel too let down.

Nicolas is a dark story about St. Nicolas and the Krampus. Nicolas accidently killed a man many centuries ago. The demons have been chasing him since undoing any good Nico does by tormenting children in their dreams driving them mad. Some have even committed suicide from the madness. He also takes any of Nico’s lovers, so Nico tries to avoid relationships.
Jamie is an artist being secluded in a cabin after his last boyfriend hurt him so bad ad had been cheating on him.
Jamie is a man a little on the effeminate side, and his previous partner all taunted him bout his hair and like some makeup. He wants a man that will accept him like he is and want him exclusively. Nicco finds Jaimie attractive but is afraid to let Jaimie know how he feels. Jaimie is very determined not to let Nico go.
I loved this story. It is very dark, and there are some graphic violence and torture though it's well written enough it didn't haunt me or give me bad dreams. The happy ending makes up for the darkness.
I am going to admit I liked the Krampus or his human form Piter. He is very sexy, yet mysterious. The scene with him getting in people's heads freaked me out and gave me chills.
If you like dark stories with a bit of violence, a sweet romance with some scorching man-sex this is definitely for you.

Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance

Before reading Nicolas by Dianne Hartsock, I was not familiar with the mythology surrounding the Krampus and its connection to the Siant Nicolas of lore. After the first couple of chapters, however, I decided to do some (admittedly cursory) research on the mythological creature. He is the evil to Saint Nicolas' good. He punishes naughty children, especially around Christmas time. He is tied to Saint Nicolas in some nebulous way (depending on which version of the myth you read).

Turn on a blizzard soundtrack from YouTube and get comfy cozy for this read. We find the heartbroken Jamie that has rented a cabin as a getaway to work on a commissioned painting and recover from a bad romance where he suffered emotional abuse and betrayal. The very handsome Nicolas lands at his dock in a canoe barely living after floating around on the Lake one cold and snowy night. Unfortunately, Nicolas is not alone as the malevolent Krampus (Piter Rupert) follows closely behind and is determined to destroy anyone Nicolas cares about. As Jamie and Nicolas come to love each other, the Krampus becomes determined to ruin the lives of the people of the town. My heart went out to Jamieson right from the first. I know what it's like to not quite fit in and to want acceptance. I was delighted that the writer had a good fellow (Nicolas) land right outside his door. But Nicolas comes with serious baggage as he has a pretty dangerous enemy in the form of the Krampus. I am particularly delighted at how well the writer resolves the conflict in the story, making the bad guy not too bad after all.

I'm not going to rate this story because unfortunately I finally had to DNF it at 61%. I thought the premise was great, I loved that, but the execution was the problem. There was WAY, WAY too much sex in my opinion, it overshadowed the story. Also I couldn't understand why Jamie fell in love with Nicolas so quickly. Was he really in love with him or was it some kind of paranormal thing happening, it was confusing. Anyway, others may love this and I can't say I hated it but it just wasn't for me.

**What a stunning cover**

● Holiday/Christmas
● Very dark
● Paranormal/Krampus
● Great premise
● Execution fell flat
● WAY too much sex
● More erotica than romance IMO
● Insta lust/love
● Suspense
● Horror
● Is it me or the story?

Well, this was a dissappointment as I've enjoyed some of ms Hartsock's other stories. Started but couldn't get into it and picked it up again after a few weeks but it didn't get any better. DNF at 39% and skipped to the next to last chapter to find out the Krampus was Nicholas' darker side?!! And then Nicolas banished him with little effort. After centuries of being haunted by him. Centuries where he apparently tortured children, perhaps not physically but in their dreams? Like he tortured Jamie in his dreams? I mean, I haven't read the complete book so correct me if I'm wrong here, but this just didn't make sense to me.

I received a copy for a honest review.

Anyone that knows me will know, I always give an honest review. I have struggled to put into words about this book, I have just read. There is a reason, I don't download dark reads and this book definitely cemented my opinion to NEVER, EVER read another. I love M/M but now I know I don't like dark M/M.

First off, I have to say that this Author is a great writer, that was very clear to me while reading. The story although the darkest I have ever read was written well. I base this on the fact that I was drawn into this scary story. My heart was pounding, my palms were sweaty, I put the book down thinking, I am not going to continue, it's just to much for me but I continued through some horrific images that the Author placed in my mind. That's what I found disturbing. I'm a lover of romance, yes I like twists and turns in a book but to this degree, no thanks.

Jamie is staying in a secluded cabin after breaking up with his cheating partner. He is happy enough staying there until he starts having these strange dreams but are they really dreams. Some almost could be nightmares, it's hard to know what is reality and what is in the mind. It's all very twisted.

Jamie saves a man named, Nicolas from freezing to death. It's quite possibly the worst mistake he's ever made, depending on your point of view. At one point, I was happy for them both to build a friendship, then I thought, Oh God this is not going to turn out well.

Nicolas keeps remembering things and we, the readers share these thoughts, imagines that have happened. It's not only that these events that have taken place are horrendous but, I found them sickening. I guess I just don't have the stomach for reading such unpleasant things happening to children.

Nicolas's enemy, Krampus is beyond evil. He's despicable, appalling, nauseating, yeah I didn't like him one bit.
He's the man in your dreams and nightmares but he's also reality. How? honestly, I have no clue, I'm still baffled by this enigma.

I think Jamie is torn between helping Nicolas get rid of Krampus because the fear of dying is all to real but lust plays a big part in this story. Jamie longs for passion and both Nicolas and Krampus are aware of this.

I admit that this book was not for me as I have tried to explain without giving out spoilers BUT if you like dark reads and aren't affected by what events take place in a story then this book is for you. I only recommend to readers that like weird and frightening stories and of course the M/M genre.

Sleep well readers. I know I didn't.

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review.***

Jamie has been hiding from the world at a cabin he rented on Lake Huron after breaking up with his last boyfriend. The last thing he expected is finding a man passed out on his dock in the middle of a snow storm, or that by saving this man, he will become entangled in the legend of Saint Nicolas and the Krampus.

Nico has been haunted by the Krampus for centuries, after he killed a butcher who had murdered three children and managing to bring them back to life. He's loved others before, but the pull he feels toward Jamie is strong and he's not certain he can stay away even if he should.

Even if Jamie doesn't quite believe some of the things Nico has told him, he can't deny that there's something sinister happening, something that threatens both him and Nico and some of the town's inhabitants.

First of all, I fell in love with the cover for this book as soon as I saw it. It's breathtakingly gorgeous and so perfect for this story.

Jamie is an effeminate painter hiding from the heartbreak his last boyfriend's betrayal caused him. He's lonely, though, and he wants to be loved. His past lovers have been bad to him, bordering on abusive, so he lacks a bit of self-confidence. Him being effeminate doesn't mean he lacks strength, which he proves time and time again during the story. Even if he has curves, long red hair and loves to wear panties, he can take care of himself and I loved that about him.

Nico is like a dream, tall, dark and mysterious. Every single time he talks in Italian to Jamie I just about melted. So bloody hot! *fans self* And even Piter, who was the villain, was really hot for most of the story, no wonder Jamie and Nico could barely resist him.

The chemistry between Jamie and Nico was amazing and they were sweet and very sexy when they were together.

The book itself reads like a gothic romance, dark and sinister, but romantically sweet at the same time. It was an enthralling blend, for certain. Well-written, engaging, fast-paced and riveting from beginning to end, this is a book I'd certainly love to read again!

My first review for the year is for the book I've been looking forward to since July because of an excerpt in the Midsummer Madness blog hop. It was magnificently dark and sensual and I wanted more of it.

The book drew me in easily enough and this was largely due to the mastery of language capturing perfectly every emotion and scene. From the warm glow of the colors when Nico and Jamie are together to the unforgiving whiteness of the snow outside, to the sultry darkness of Piter/the Krampus, it was all amazingly vivid.

The back stories of both characters explained quite well their current state of mind and the occasional illogical behavior on their end making them declare their love, then doubt it, then accept it, and then suddenly trying to run away from it.

The only thing I didn't quite like was that at some point towards the middle the book was a bit repetitive and it felt as if one scene paraphrases another without much progress in the story. Fortunately it went back to intriguing and didn't wane thereafter. I wouldn't say the end was my type but it was justified and as vividly carried out as the rest of the book, and of course, happy.

As for Piter, he was as splendid as he was undefinable. Voluptuous, evil, relentless, with a voice which "dripped honey tinged with desire when he spoke", but also lonely in a way. This may be the first book I read this year but if there is a poll at the end about the most fascinating villain, I'm sure I'd vote for him.

Between the devastating descriptions of snow, there's a lot of heartwarming love, peppered with lascivious heat so it's a nice book to read during the winter.

3.5 stars. Overall this was not a bad read. We have a take on St. Nick/Nico & Krampus/Piter. We find out that Krampus takes any of Nico's lovers and torments them, plus any kids that Nico "helps out", just like St Nicholas. But Pitr enters Jamie's dreams before he actually meets Nico & am unsure why. There is major insta-love between Jamie & Nico when they meet. Jamie tries not to fall for him because he has been used and treated like crap by all of his prior lovers. Even though Nico does fall for him he attempts to push him away so that Piter doesn't hurt him. The sex was very hot. There were some pretty violent scenes. My issues were that some of the stuff is pretty repetitive; confrontation w/Piter, eat, have sex & sleep, repeat. Another issue is Nico has been around a long, long time & we presume that he will be around for a very long time to come. What about Jamie? He alludes to that fact that he will keep Jamie with him if it's within his power. I wanted more of what that would entail. And Piter, we know who he really is but I kind of felt sorry for him even though he was the "big bad". . Plus we never really delve into Jamie's kinky side. We knew he liked some of the things that Piter did to him . I will definitely try other books by this author.

So I want to start of this review by saying I loved the authors pretense of this story..

Nicolas accidently kills a man who was intent on murdering three children which then sends that mans evil spirit after Nicolas.

Okay like I said loved the pretense of this story but unfortunately did not connect with these characters in this story at all. I have to say I was not a fan of Jamie's character at all for some reason I really do not know why. Then I actually do love insta love stories but sometimes it can be too insta love for me where everything just moves way to fast and does not feel right at all to me, unfortunately I felt like that with this book.

I do not want to give away any spoilers so I will leave this review with... While I loved the pretense of this story I just was not a fan of these characters so I am sad to say this book was just not for me.

If you are looking for something different from the happy, happy holiday reads then Nicolas is the one for you. A delicious blend of good, bad, sexy, torture, mystery, paranormal, and well just about everything in between. I first came across this one when I was doing my paranormal blog posts for Halloween but never had a chance to read it so I stuck it in my holiday folder and loved it from page one. Nico, Piter, & Jamie's connection keeps you enthralled all the way through, I just hated putting it down to eat, I've never rushed through a meal so fast to get back to my Kindle. With the paranormal darkness elements I hate to touch on any specifics so I don't give away any spoilers but let me just say that I am already looking forward to re-reading Nicolas for many holiday seasons to come.

2 stars for this M/M
I was so excited to read this book; the blurb grabbed my attention and sounded so good. But I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. I am a huge fan of instant love but this didn’t even feel like instant love to me either. I don’t know, maybe the whole Piter/Krampus was throwing me off but something just wasn’t working for me, even the sex wasn’t working and for me to say that means something because I love sex, any kind of it and lots of it. Oh well, I guess I can’t love every book I read.
