What would happen to life on Earth if the moon were destroyed? That's the premise of RUNAWAY MOON, a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel set in Southern California in the year 2029. A rogue dwarf planet narrowly misses Earth but slams into the moon at 50,000 mph causing a massive shockwave and a firestorm of debris that rains down on Earth and sets off a chain reaction of cataclysmic events hastening our sixth mass extinction.
Among the less than two dozen survivors left in America are Alex and Jessa Jacks, their teenage son, Deuce, their German shepherd, Samson, plus nearly two dozen other humans from diverse backgrounds (including an astrophysicist, a teacher, two orphaned sisters, a geology grad student and a casino blackjack dealer) who eventually make their way to one of the largest alpine fresh water sources in North America, Lake Tahoe, California.
There, they try to build a new community despite having lost all of their material possessions and everything else they've ever known in The Crash. They are forced to fight for their basic survival amid ever-threatening Stone Age conditions, rapid, catastrophic climate change and global geologic upheaval.
Who among them will survive in the face of this relentless onslaught of frightening natural disasters, and how?
This is a book I've wanted to read for a longtime, and I finally got to it! It's a brilliant read. Very believable! Continuous struggle to survive. A very, very good book. A very realistic end to the book. Highly recommended!
Great sci fi. I don't know why there are not more moon disaster books, it's something that is right there waiting for the creepy horror to be written. Really enjoyed this
While the beginning and middle were very interesting, the last quarter of the book made me think the author just got tired of the story. I don't know if there is a second book, and after the disappointing ending here, I doubt I would read it. The premise caught my attention; the moon is struck by an enormous asteroid, knocking it out into space, away from the earth. Debris from the collision rains down on the earth, causing worldwide destruction. How the few survivors struggle to continue was what I enjoyed most about this book, and I wish it had remained the focus, but it was not to be. Results: started well, but lost me at the end.a
Saved by aliens at the end? Acidic seas rise then retreat? Ok so sci fi aside, this was supposed to be a survival post apoc book. But how do they eat if all the animals are dead? Why do the live in mud huts when the land is littered with dead wood? Why don't they forage through the destruction for tools, canned goods, weapons, batteries, camping year and other items? Poor survival story. Hokey, phoney and unbelievable. It was like reading a bad version of the 2012 movie in book form. Campy garbage. Think I'll stick with the walking dead thank you very much.
This is a very enjoyable book. The characters were well developed. The plot believable. The writing style and grammar was right on the mark. Even the ending left me with a sense of satisfaction. The author has done a very good job of entertaining the reader and I hope he writes more novels like this one.
What would we do in the circumstances th at befall the characters of this story? Given no choice but to flee, they seek others and then band together to survive th a absolute worst scenario apocalypse. It didn't hurt that the group just happened to have the brains and skills to stay alive with an unexpected twist at the end.
As I got closer to the end of this disaster story I wondered how the author would end it. Truly did not see this coming. Excellent read. Hoping there is a sequel.
Now this is a real original! I have really, really enjoyed this book. Is there a sequel to it? The fact that Samson survived is a BIG bonus! There has to be a sequel!
This novel has several different disasters, one after another, with characters that are engaging and mostly loveable. It has a surprise ending, too. Is like a sequel.
