Matt Carson and Trina Lovett befriend each other during turbulent times at a young age. Over the years, their friendship strengthens building a strong, unbreakable bond. At least that is what they believe. Life choices put an ocean between them, and the depth of their bond is tested. Under the stress of being apart, heart-wrenching events leave them plagued with doubt. Danger forces them to make irrefutable decisions about what they want from life.
What a lovely story. The friends-to-lovers trope worked well here. At the beginning of the story, the main characters (Matt and Trina) meet as teenagers, forging an immediate life-long bond that both lonely youths desperately need. The story continues to follow their emotional journeys, together and apart, well into their twenties. There was a lot of tragedy and heart-ache along the way, but there was also a deep sense of hopefulness and a lot of palpable love, which made me a happy reader.
I really liked Matt as a leading man. Initially meeting his character as a sweet young teenager struggling with parental loss, made for an intriguing introduction and left me eager to see the man he would become. And what a man he was. Kind and brave, I loved how constant he was in his affections for Trina. He knew she was “it” for him from the moment he saw her and he stayed true to that love for years, even though time, distance and horrible meddling parents (constantly) stood in his way. I don’t really care how realistic he was, I read romance stories in an effort to escape reality, so give me more sappy-sweet, idealistic romantic male leads like Matt and I’ll be a happy girl.
Trina was a sweet character; I couldn’t help but root for her and want her to overcome all her familial dramas and get her man. Unfortunately, I found her a little bit too passive for my liking. Her parents were truly atrocious people, controlling Trina’s whole life (as well as the life of her brother, Bradley) to an unbelievably excessive degree. Their world views were infuriating, and some of their obstructive, underhanded behaviour, was unforgivable in my books. I couldn’t help but hold it against Trina and Bradley for appearing quite weak-willed, failing to stand up to their parents in order to find their own happiness. I get that this was the emotional journey Trina had to go through to come out the other side a stronger, more determined woman, but it still annoyed me to no end.
Jarrod’s writing had a natural flow and the prose was graceful and affecting. It was an effortless read from start to finish, which I really appreciate in my romance books. The story wasn’t overly complex and nothing particularly surprising happened along the way, but there were a ton of emotionally charged moments that kept me engaged and flipping pages with ease. I look forward to reading more from this promising series!
***Special thanks to the author for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I had the pleasure of proofing Divine and was astounded at how easy it was to connect with the characters. Cait's insightful writing made me feel their emotions and believe their reactions the whole time.
My favorite part was the beginning, though, when they first met. I thought it was incredibly sweet how quickly two souls who each had their difficulties to deal with were able to find comfort in each other's presence and develop a life-lasting relationship.
Very good love story, that shows to readers that love never dies, it just grows when time past. I truly enjoyed every minute of it. It was the kind of book that made you sorry when it was over. I immediately fell in love with Matt and Trina from the first moment I met them.I love this book!I absolutely could not put this book down! I want to know more, how they live and what they to next, it was the best start for this year reading challenge. I loved it from start to end, it just make me feel like, love is what nobody can break and it lives forever even after that when we die. I really wish that I can find my soulmate too, like Tirina did. It was so heartmelting story that i cried when they we apart and what they have been through, it was to hard to read that I just cried and cried. I am glad that I read this book, very good story and so real life where they lived. I want to read it more and more, not to stop just enjoy this story. Thank you for that oppurtunity to author, who writed this book. I searched and the second book is available too, so I will read it too. Very good story and characters.
Divine by Cait Jarrod, is one of the best heartwarming books I have read this year. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through, it was never boring. The characters were so well written, you felt like you knew them. Trina and Matt became friends at an early age after awful events in their lives. The connection between the two never faultered. You could feel it through the heartache, drama and love in this book. I highly recommend this book, please read it you will not be sorry.
Cait writes a gripping story that you do not want to end. I am so happy to know this is a series, so there are more books to come.
This is a arc I had received from Cait Jarrod she is a new author to me and am please the she send me a arc now I can say she became one of my favorite author!!! I love this book!! Its about a very young couple finding love at first sight! her parent had done everything to stop her happiness n love all the while he had done everything she had dream of! you would really love this story knowing how they manage all these years you will be in tears of happiness!!
Divine is one of those stories that warms the heart and you don't want it to end. At 13 and 14 Matt and Trina become instant friends. Matt knows deep down from the beginning there is a bond between them that can not be broken. Cait Jarrod is amazing with her writing; keeping you so interested in the next page, next chapter, next book. I am a fan of her style of writing and will continue to look forward to more enjoyable reading.
Matt and Trina met when they were both going through a difficult time in their lives. Their instant connection is what draws you in. A lot of action and drama keep you reading to know how it ends for them. It's an emotional roller coaster but those are the best kind!
Divine tells the story of a friendship that never dies. Matt and Trina form a bond that is unbreakable. They love each other despite all of life's challenges. This is a must read for anyone who believes in true love. This story shows that true love and friendship will always win.
***I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review!***
This is a contemporary romance with a friends-to-lovers storyline. It takes place over the course of a 10-year period, and revolves around best friends Matt and Trina, as they try to move beyond a life-changing friendship to an endless love.
Matt has lived through some terrible heartache, and meets Trina on one of the worst days of his life. She gives him peace, and brings some light back into his life. Though the two form a lasting friendship, there are many people and events that get in their way. These things set their lives on separate paths, but eventually they are able to find their way back to one another, and true happiness.
As I said above, I received an ARC of this story. As such, I don't expect everything to be perfect in terms of formatting, grammar/editing, etc. However, I was completely confused when I started reading the first page and then it jumped to the title and opening pages, and then jumped into the story again at a different place. I don't know if what I started reading was meant to be the prologue and it just wasn't in the right place, or never deleted, but it definitely took me awhile to get my head into the book. There were also tense changes in the sentences, and a difference in the age of the characters from what we were told they should be. As a result, the story started out rocky to me.
I had a hard time getting into the story in general. It wasn't that the overall story or writing was bad, but I just couldn't connect with the characters. I didn't really understand the decisions they made, and I felt like Trina was pretty weak. Even when she finally took control over her own life, I just never really felt like she had a strong personality or that I could relate to her. Matt had a stronger personality, and I felt a stronger connection to him, but it still wasn't enough to really keep me invested in the book.
I feel like this book needed something more. More character depth, a longer storyline with more action, and possibly an epilogue since I felt like the ending was a bit abrupt. The biggest problem I had with this story was that the two main characters spent more time apart than together. I felt like we were "told" more of how they felt about each other than really getting to experience it ourselves. There were some times when I could feel their bond, but they were kind of here and there.
I do think that the supporting characters were well written. They were very memorable, most especially Trina's family. I felt like that was an aspect of the story that was very well developed. There was no question about who they were as people or where they stood in the story.
Overall, this is a solid story. It's definitely something I would expect to read in this genre, and there were some surprising moments that I liked. I am an emotional reader, so if a book doesn't bring out a lot of emotion in me (happiness, sadness, laughter, over the top ridiculousness, etc) then I don't always enjoy it as much. This wasn't an overly emotional book for me. Even though I felt the ending was a bit abrupt, I really liked where the author took it. The ending made sense, and it went to the heart of the understanding and love the two characters felt for each other. I feel that many readers will enjoy this book and the characters, and therefore I would recommend it.
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Divine by Cait Jarrod. This was the first book of hers I read. and needless to say I’ve added all of her titles to my TBR list. Normally with a shorter book you feel rushed and that the story doesn’t foster a natural character development but that is not the case with Matt and Trina. You are introduced to the characters as young teenagers when Matt is at “his spot” in the woods after his mother’s funeral. Trina interrupts him and they instantly feel a connection. They share their hopes and dreams for the future and realize their home life couldn’t be more different. Trina’s parents believe that everyone is beneath them and will only associate with people who benefit them. Matt grew up judging people by who they were not their worth; this instantly drew Trina to him because she was disgusted with her parent’s view of the world.
He watched her intertwine their fingers. "It is. I'm not gonna lie. Not seeing you will be the hardest thing I'll ever have to do. It's pretty high on my shit list."
When Matt and Trina make their plans for after high school they know their plans will create even more distance but they are determine to maintain their strong bond. Through unseen circumstances they lose contact and both are miserable wondering why the other is not responding. Once they are able to see each other again my heart instantly rejoiced at the happiness you felt for them. The draw they have always had seems so genuine you just want everything to work out. But as we all know things often do not go according to plan.
Once again they are torn apart and at this point I feel like my heart cannot take much more. Matt and Trina have such kindness in them that you want nothing more then for them to find happiness. I liked the growth you see in both characters and their changing relationship with maturity and age. This is a very well written book and it left me wanting to experience every up and down with Matt and Trina. You even feel attached to the secondary characters and I am hoping they all get their own book.
If your like me and have never checked out Cait Jarrod I highly recommend pre-ordering this one and reading it on November 23!!
"I haven't recovered from the pool of want when I'm with you. When I'm away from you, I feel like part of me is missing. You're everything to me."
My last book for 2015. Story of childhood friends Katrina and Matt becoming each other's soulmate. They met each other when they were only fourteen and thirteen. Matt just lost his mother and Katrina was trying to get away from their snobby and controlling parents. Matt had his secret hiding place near the river, its where they met each other . Since then they were best friends. However, Trina's parents were not approve of Matt due to his background and wealth. Their friendship remains until they were adults. Trina was heading for college and Matt was heading to become sniper. Both wanted more from each other but she was heading to college and he was heading to Marine. They promised to keep in touch. But Trina's parents controlled everything regarding Trina and Bradley and they were trying to please their parents, never act upon it. They were snobby and absolutely rude to anybody who did not meet their expectations. Matt comes back to see Trina, she was engaged to Cal. But she was trying to break it off but Matt rushes out and heads back to Afghanistan. But when they were about to see each other, they are faced with more problems and obstacles. They never have told each other how they felt but they knew they were each other's soulmate. They are desperately trying to get back to each other and it's about their journey. I really loved how they met each other and how they wait for each other. I loved her friend Cadence who spoke her mind at all time and Bradley for being so royal to Trina. I wish there is a book about them.. I did enjoy reading it.
I was extremely lucky to have received an advanced copy of this book and I truly enjoyed every minute of it. It was the kind of book that made you sorry when it was over. I immediately fell in love with Matt and Trina from the first moment I met them. You could feel their chemistry and connection, even at their young age, in every word Cait wrote. The backstory on these two characters was wonderful, emotional and heart wrenching at times. Even though their bond was strong, they each had a plan and a path for their future and wanted to fulfill it. Even though being a Doctor wasn't exactly what Trina wanted. Decisions they made put them miles apart but you still felt their love in every word. There were several obstacles in their path on this emotional journey they took, but in true Cait Jarrod fashion there was a happily ever after.
I going to say right upfront, I wanted to yell and scream at Trina’s parents and I did that a time or two at my Kindle. They were not nice people! Matt’s brother Travis and Trina’s brother Bradley were great secondary characters. Cait sucked me right in and made me demand more about these two guys. So, lucky for me Travis and Bradley’s books will be coming in the near future!!
Divine is the first book in the Montana Dreams Series, with Destiny and Desire to be released in December 2015 and January of 2016. The book is a well written and totally compelling story that hooked me from the very first chapter and kept me intrigued right to the very last page. This is the deeply emotional story of Matthew Carson and Katrina Lovett who meet when they are in their teens and forge a friendship that turns to love, and then disaster, when Trina's conniving parents and the man they want her to marry conspire behind her back to keep her and Matt apart. Their story is an emotional roller coaster that will have you glued to the pages as you hurt for this couple and question whether they will ever find their way back to each other. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was the first book I read by Cait Jarrod and it didn't disappoint. I would consider this a short story and I usually don't pick up short stories because I always feel like the story was missing parts. However, Cait did an amazing job telling the story and not leaving anything out. Divine was a book that I didn't want to put down till I was finished! Trina and Matt became friends at a young age but went there separate ways after high school. However neither of them forgot about each other. The story starts from a young age and then tells the story of the troubles they encounter as they try to come back together. If you are looking for a quick but awesome story I would highly recommend Divine by Cait Jarrod.
Cait Jarrod is an amazing writer. She has a superb grasp of the human experience and human emotion. I love stories of couples bonded by harrowing events and how choice effects them. I saw this book almost as a movie in my head as I was reading. This book is vivid and telling. Readers will fall in love with Jarrod and with her characters.
This was one of my favorites from Cait's collection. While so many influences impacted Matt and Trina's actions, you kept on edge wanting everything to work out. The different events captured my interest all the way through, and the ending was remarkable! Excellent, Cait!!!
I received a copy from NetGalley for exchange of my honest review.
Can pure love last and never change? Can anyone trespass it and ruin it? Can someone stay intact in the name of pure love? Well, "Divine" has all these answers, for us!
Matthew Carson and Katrina Lovett are met, for a first time, at a spot along-side Potomac river, the day of Matt's mother funeral. It was the worst day of his life! After the loss of his father few years earlier and now his mother, Matt was going to be alone with his older brother Travis, who's now tried to be a brother, a parent and a closest friend for him. Thirteen sucks!! Everything in life sucks!! Except his secret spot. The place he always escaped from everyone and everything. However that day, that specific horrible day, a girl showed there, all skinny and pale but with the most beautiful green eyes he ever seen, turning his life one eighty from his axis, only with one look into her eyes.
Trina wasn't like the other girls Matt knew. And he didn't knew many! However, she pulled him in a way, a very strong way, making him be open to her, to confide his secret thoughts, his fears and the deep pain he felt, losing his parents so fast. She was divine for him! And there was a mutual pull between them. Trina wanted him from day one but she kept down her lust for him, and Matt did the same. Both knew, after their first secret randezvous, that their future was different. Each one separately was going to take an other road to walk by and that knowlenge was their personal limit not to cross, destroying their friendship. They stayed close and inseperable, the following years, meeting at their secret spot, every single day, just talking about everything, until Matt had to leave for the Marines and Trina for college. Their strong need to be physically connected, before they take their seperable ways, remained a dream and that dream stayed into their thoughts, keeping them connected, until the day they'll meet again. But Trinas family had other plans for her and when the day to finally see each other again came, it was the worst disaster ever!
Cait Jarrod is a new author to me and "Divine" is the first book I read by her. I liked the way she recounted Matt's and Trina's story, giving both POVs, because it helped me be connected with them, understand and love them, but, I must say, I needed more details about their youth years together or the years apart. I had the feeling that something important was missing! Although it was clear that both of them were waiting, it looked so unreal. However, it was an easy, enjoyful reading, reminded me who difficult things are when you are young and innocent, when you give your heart and soul for the first time when you are in love, when you have to trespass your own family for the sake of your future and happiness, when you finally tried to be independent. Smart dialogs, secondary characters that I would like to know more about them and, of course, the pure love, I always melt when I read about it, made "Divine" a book to pick and read without second thoughts. Enjoy reading a good book! Merry Christmans
If you like romance Divine is a good read for you. Matt and Trina meet and fall for each other at a young age. And have to endure a lot of things in life to end up together. I really like Matts character, he is the type of man you want to love. He Is honorable and knows Trina is the one and will work on overcoming anything. Trina is a sweet girl I just wish she would fight her parent harder. In all this is a great and easy read. Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock. I give this book 4 fangs!!!!!!
Going from tragedy to finding a kindred spirit with a girl that is way out of Matt's league, but he nor Trina care. They know what they want just not how to go about having it. The emotions in this story go from sad, angry to love with no bounds. Even with separating they seem to always find each other no matter what gets in their way. They find life is too short to wait and see. As with all of Cait Jarrod's books this one grabbed me and held on tight, leaving me wanting so much more.
A sweet and enduring friends to lovers troupe that was well written, fast paced and enjoyable. A journey thru out the years between the two of many ups and downs.
Matt and Trina are star-crossed lovers. They find each other as youngsters and form a bond that time cannot break. Though her parents do their best to keep them apart, fate has other ideas. I found the characters believable and the sentimental scenes well done without going overboard. Matt is an ideal book boyfriend, tough but damaged by the Marines and still mad about Trina. Trina is a spoiled rich girl that learns her way of life does not necessarily bring happiness. Life throws a wrench at both of them and you'll have to read it to find out how they each deal with tragedy. The secondary characters were well developed and I'm looking forward to reading about the next brother. This should be a good series that I would easily recommend.
I loved this story. I almost cried a couple times while reading Matt and Katrina's story. If you enjoy HEA stories I'd recommend this one. There are no erotic scenes, but there are two love scenes in this book. I'm looking forward to reading the other two books in The Montana Dreams Collection. Great Job, Cait! I look forward to reading your other books. http://www.amazon.com/Montana-Dreams-...
Prose I really wanted to like this book. Even though I tend to read more dynamic or literary based novels, I’m not opposed to a good romance, and yet, the flaws in this book seemed overwhelming.
First of all, the writing was simple, filled with mistakes, and lacked substance. Immediately, the story jumps into the tragedy of Matt losing his mom, and the way his emotions are portrayed and presented to us seem flimsy, being filled with what the author thinks he should feel and not what he most likely felt. Now—true—every person grieves differently. But as I lost my father at roughly the same age as Matt lost his mom, to me, his actions rang false.
On top of that, the author used many words in an inconsistent or wrong manner. For one, she misused words, such as danced, sireness, and the author’s favorite: fisted.
Her mother fisted her hands…
To Fist means to hit with your fists, but the author repeatedly tries to use it to mean make a fist. Then we encounter many wishy-washy or weak descriptions. One of which was regarding Matt’s character where, from Trina’s POV, she says she liked him because he always went with the flow of life. But then, just a page later, Trina admires his no-nonsense attitude. He was her rock. It made no sense. Even when it came to basic metaphors, certain aspects were missing, like below.
A lasso sensation tightened his chest…
Characters When it came to the characters, things didn’t get much better. Most were flat, self-involved caricatures that reeked of something from bad morning soap operas. The good guys were overly good, and the bad; overly bad—or at least, they weren’t fleshed out.
Take Trina’s horrible parents. They were the stereotypical rich, do-what-I-say, poor-people-are-trash parents. At one point even, the dad scoffs at Matt for not taking his money, by saying, “Wow! Who in this world doesn’t want money?” Over the top—yes—but if the author had spent more time justifying this viewpoint, it could’ve enriched the story.
Added to this, both of the selfish, stuck-up parents’ children—Trina and Bradley—are nothing like their parents. They value morals and humanity, yet nowhere in the story is it explained how the direct genetic offspring of such pricks could turn out so different. Speaking from experience as a teacher, many of my students ring true to either one or both of their parents. I have yet to see a single child that bucks the entire system, and yet this family has two!!! Now if the author were to explain somewhere that they were raised by a wholesome nanny or two distant relatives, then it might make sense, but as is, well, it comes off flat and lifeless.
Structure When it comes to structure, the biggest flaw was the formatting. This could just be the mobi file the author sent me, and usually I’m not too nit-picky about this kind of thing, but here, it was ridiculous. Half the time, the dialogue would stop and start as if a new paragraph, or was completely misplaced, leaving the reader with the belief that someone new was talking. Check out below.
“Hang back,” Gunny said and jutted his chin toward a wooden table outside the mes hall. “I’ll get us a few cold ones.”
Then there were the poor POV shifts. As every paragraph had a large space between it and the next, when a POV shift did happen, it looked like nothing more than a new paragraph to the same old POV. Instead, we get a new situation and characters with little or no warning. When the characters weren’t together, it was a little more tolerable, but sometimes it switches mid-scene, which is fine, if it is done right.
Lastly, the author tosses in strange images of mountains mid-story, causing the reader to believe a POV shift is about to occur…and yet it doesn’t. Everywhere I went in the story, I ran into something that jerked me around and frustrated me—two things an author doesn’t want to do to their reader.
Overall
In the end, it could’ve been better. I think one major flaw is the author decided to put her book in the subcategory of ‘coming of age’ which is maybe not appropriate for this material. The events in this story are so gut-wrenchingly normal and predictable for the age set she writes about that many times I felt I was watching an MTV reality show. I don’t consider Real World ‘coming of age.’ If best, this book should’ve been tossed somewhere in the romance grouping because clearly that’s what it was. A coming of age book ends with an epiphany that leads to a new outlook if not a new philosophy on life. At the end of this book, they had sex—and cheesy sex at that. Not quite the note a coming of age tale ends on.
Matt Carson and Trina Lovett became friends when they were lonely teenagers, each with their own problems. Their friendship continued to grow as they become adults. Time and circumstances keep them physically apart, but the connection between them is never truly broken. Trina’s parent do everything they can over the years to keep the two apart. While Matt is stationed overseas, she eventually stops hearing from him. It is only when tragedy strikes and her parents have finally driven Matt away, that Trina finally realizes the extent of her parents’ interference in her life. She realizes what she truly wants and follows Matt to Montana to find her happy ending. This is a heart-wrenching story the has you believing that soulmates really do exists and crossing your fingers for a happy ending. The writing is crisp and keeps you reading to see what is in store for these two.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!! While I found the book ok, his had potential to be a bit more - some of the situations in the book were unrealistic - seriously - what really cute guy goes off the the service for years, becomes a sniper - and is still a virgin, waiting for the girl he has yet to make a real move on.. and she is just as bad. I am not saying I wanted to follow them into the bedroom.. but really... too much time passes & and just seems unrealistic. While I read for fun there has to be a point that I feel that "it could happen".. was not in this book. I received this book in exchange for my honest review -
