This is my first Robert Crais novel, assigned for my Mystery Book Club.
I liked the story, found it entertaining all the way through, with enough action to keep the story moving at a good pace. The story was set in L.A, and concerns the investigation into a mother who has lost her son in an explosion overseas, and who has apparently entered the criminal world to seek answers to his death.
Elvis Cole, private investigator, is the major character, who is hired to find out about the missing mother. Cole knows his business, is shrewd and smart, but finds himself caught up in more than he expected as the plot unfolds. The story also features officer James Scott, and his dog Maggie, a K-9 specializing in bomb detection.. This man/dog duo won my heart, and I hope to see them again in future novels.

Robert Crais has the exceptional gift of putting the reader in the moment. Easier said than done. His characters are colorful and true. The good guys like Elvis Cole are very good. The bad guys like Mr. Rollins are very bad. The story set in LA, at least for me, adds to the story. But what makes this writing exceptional is the K-9 dog Maggie’s relationship to her handler, Scott James. Crais does a masterful job imagining how this dog thinks and acts. The Promise is a wonderful read. Robert Crais a very talented author.

This was another book of the Elvis Cole series. In it Elvis was hired to clandestinely find a woman who worked for company that did lots of top secret work. He was given an address that when he got there, he meets an K-9 officer, Scott James, and his dog, Maggie who is after a murderer who he traced to that address. There all kids of twists and turns in the book. At one time Elvis is stupidly the suspect for the murder that occurred at that home.

The Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books are always good. Elvis is a great protagonist, and Joe Pike is the epitome of the guy you want on your side when things start to go bad.

I always like this author but I think I am bumping this up to 5 stars on account of Maggie the K9 dog.

It's good to see Elvis Cole move further away from being a Spenser clone. A good read with the right amontof action.

Great continuation of the Cole & Pike series. So glad that Maggie, the German shepherd was did NOT die! Good moments of humor and twist as usual. Highly recommend.
