An interesting little paperback about the famous ship. First 1955 Corgi softcover edition of a book previously published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1953.Intro by the Duke of Edinburgh.
Mr. Alan Villiers was an Australian who had won considerable fame for himself as a result of his voyages in sailing-ships. Mr. Villiers preferred the excitement and the danger of small sailing-ships to the comfort and the safety of the modern ship.
What a delightful little book! Written in 1952, this is the story of a magnificent ship from a distant past, a day when sailing ships rules the waves - well still only just. In most respects it was the wrong ship to build at the time and never really paid her way as intended due to the upsurge of both steamships and super-sized sailing ships. It existed mainly due to the ego of the private shipping owner Willis, and aren't we all glad he built it.
The Cutty Sark is one of those things that has become an historical landmark, the only one of its kind surviving in the world today. It has been restored and is open for public inspection at Greenwich, London
