Collects Spider-Island (2015) issues #1-5
This "What If..." story is set during the events of "Secret Wars," however it doesn't tie into "Secret Wars" in such a way that makes it required reading for that series. With that being said, this was a very fun story to read.
I am prone to like this collection because it is a "What If..." story (parallel universe stories that I love!) showing an alternate way that the Spider-Man (my favorite superhero!) event "Spider-Island" (an event I really enjoyed!) could have happened.
In this version, Spider-Man is missing, and Agent Venom has taken the lead on fighting back against the Queen and her spider-people drones.
When this comic was originally released, it featured back-up stories about MayDay Parker (the Spider-Woman from an parallel Earth). This story is a direct continuation from "Spider-Verse" (another Spider-Man event that I liked).
All that to say, this was an all-around great read. The only thing that would have made it better is if the "Spider-Island" stories were all lumped together, followed by the MayDay Parker stories all lumped together. Instead, this book collects the issues as they were originally published, so there is a break in the "Spider-Island" action to tell a brief part of MayDay's story. Then, "Spider-Island" starts back up again, and then another break (and so on and so on). It would have been a better reading experience if the back-up story featuring MayDay still appeared in this collection, but appeared at the end of the book, all collected together. (Small nitpick.)
SPOILERS:
I loved the way that Venom saved some of the heroes by turning them into monster versions of themselves (Man Wolf, a vampire, Lizard Hulk, etc.). This was a surprise to me, but added to the sense of fun and excitement that this story already had.
