Often, by the sixth book in a series, I begin to lose interest as the stories often have a feel of sameness to them. That hasn’t happened for me with this series. There is enough growth and new aspects that this book easily held my interest.

This time PI and psychic Discordia Jones is called in by the police to help with nightly horrible murders and theft of magical items. Who or even what is the question and touching the bodies brings about a serious backlash on Cordi of what the victims experienced.

Besides the mystery and horror there are the various relationships with secondary characters, humor, the dogs, some new situations and her relationship with Logan moves forward. One new situation appears to carry forward into at least the next book as we have yet to discover a reason it was brought about as well as how it will change her life.

This story would be somewhat difficult to follow if you haven’t read the prior books.

It was a little disconcerting reading this at times because at various points Discord either spoke about, or had pointed out to her, pretty much every issue I had with the previous novel and she vowed to try harder. Apart from the bit of weird 4th wall breakage where a fictional telepathic person seemed to be communicating with me, I enjoyed this instalment a lot better than the last.

For me the events of the book flowed a lot more smoothly than in the last. It felt like there were far less needless "walking the dogs" scenes in this one, which kept all the thoughts, feelings, and plot revelations neatly together in their own particular scenes instead of starting to be discussed, stalling out, Discord going off to play with her dogs for a bit, then An Epiphany Strikes and she teleports to someone to finish the conversation.

As a happy consequence to this the few instances Discord does spend time with her dogs (which we have to remember are legitimate secondary characters who have already helped save her life on at least one occasion) were much more enjoyable to read because 1) they weren't happening all the time, and 2) could instead be used as a way to have non-plot related, character building conversations with people instead of endless introspection. In this case mostly with Logan about the Tiger Clan and where their relationship is going. Considering Logan isn't even human, they were nicely low-key "humanising" moments that continue to make the characters come alive as people.

I also liked how the main murder-carnage plot point in this book didn't directly relate to Discord ! I mean yes, she was mixed up in it because this is her series, but only because she helps the police out with her psychic powers and has a bit of a Crusader complex (as mentioned many times in the story already). It was not because she'd accidentally tripped (or knowingly rushed) in to a Plot Trap or because some Ancient Supernatural [X] was pissy with her for some reason and wanted to take her out. Which isn't to say that I object to plot being a direct consequence of character actions, but it was getting a little ridiculous how every little thing seemed to be connected to our resident heroine some how.

The editing seemed to be better this time around as well with no remembered their/ there issues and only a handful of missing "a"s or "the"s (sadly typos are wily, tenacious creatures that will never be fully eradicated). Which makes it sound like the last novel was nigh unreadable when it wasn't, in fact the editing has been good through-out the series, which just makes it more noticable when errors do pop up. The fact that I find this novel so sharply done is, hopefully, a compliment, I certainly intend it to be one.

If I have one issue with this installment, and it's a pretty minor one all things considered, it's that it felt very much like a transitional book. There was some action at the beginning, then a loooot of talking scenes of one variety or another and some elements that felt like things were being shuggled around and lined up for a future events, before the last 10% was the big action showdown and the end of book wrap-up. Still, the first 60% flew by before I even noticed, so it couldn't have bothered me too much not to have a bit more action or a few more suspense filled moments.

To bring everything to a conclusion, I very much enjoyed reading this but I can't quite give it 4 stars because it felt more like it was tying up the past/ lining up future events more than anything to me. I do think it was a very solid 3 star read for those already following the adventures of Discordia Jones (Psychic Investigator) though, and if GR did half stars I'd probably rate it 3.5 stars instead (I'm hopeful I'll get to legitimately rate the next in the series higher). Overall pretty good going for the 6th in a series and I still look forward to reading the next one.

(4.5 Stars)
"A Little Street Magic" has me thinking that this book maybe the best installment in the Discord Jones series. This time Cordi has been called in by the police to help investigate the gruesome murder of a shop owner. Apparently, the criminals exploded his body leaving Cordi to upchuck her lunch much to the ridicule of a newly hired jackass of a policy officer named Dodson. Of course. he is in for a ride awakening as with most naysayers when it comes to Cordi because it is hard not to respect someone who can do what she does. The poor guy only concern as he was dying was the fate of his dog, Rufus. Any fan of this series knows Cordi is a sucker for strays.

As the body count rises, it becomes clear that the criminals are targeting magical items but the question is who are they? They seem to possess vampiric abilities but we all know, all is not what it seems sometimes. Additionally, Lord Thorandryll has announce his candidacy for the mayoral race. Talk about ego! However, on a brighter front Cordi has formed genuine friendships among the vampires, with Kethrydryll, and her relationship with Logan has finally gone all the way.

The best part of this series has been the growth within each of the varying factions and characters. There is something wonderful about Cordi that really seems to unify usually opposing factions. I also love the way Cordi's character has grown as well. Without revealing any spoilers, my all time favourite moment is when Cordi finally has Lord Thorandryll by the short hairs and puts him in his place. This was long overdue as far as I am concerned. Ms. Drummond, kudos again for a job well done and hurry up and release book seven please!

Fun series

A revamp of old tropes got a refreshing face lift. Our heroine is unique, gutsy, clumsy and learning her way through a magical awakening.

Wow, I was like, 'I wonder when the next discord Jones novel is coming out' ...... oh okay two days ago. This is good timing. I know i'm adding to my winter break reading list now :)

Update: Nov. 26, 2015
I couldn't wait until my winter break started and read it anyways. Eeee! I super squealed when Logan and Jones finally hooked up. I really like how Logan and Jones are getting along. The ending was little disappointing, I felt like the 'mystery' was resolved too quickly and easily. However, it was nice to see the main characters into getting hurt this time. Mixing things up a bit, not over using the tropes. Did the good luck charm do anything?

My biggest complaint, was that this story was extremely short. Jones deserves a longer story, though I don't know what the rules are for self publishing, I imagine they are less strict? There just isn't enough time to do a lot of character developing, introduce new characters, or create a more complex plot. It just felt very linear, especially at the end. Everything was neatly tied up. Everybody just want's to be Cordi's friend, and as much as i'm complaining, I do like how these stories don't conform to the general mystery-romance-fantasy tropes. The main reason I keep reading them.

I just hope that the short length of the stories don't cause Logan and Discord's characters to become too flat... I lurve them! They are definitely on their way to becoming my favourite book couple!

Dipping back into the world of Discord Jones is the equivalent of wrapping up in a blanket in front of the fire on a cold winters evening with a favourite glass of something. It's like having a hug from a friend you don't see very often. I loved this book even more than the others in this series and that is saying something. There was a new glow about Cordi, a new found confidence and resolution which was delightful to read. She is growing up and learning a lot and is beginning to understand the world that she lives in. One of the things that makes reading series so awarding was displayed perfectly by Cordi in this book. To follow her life and that of her friends (and sort of friends/sometime enemies) is an honour. I look forward ever more each time one of these books comes out.

But don't let that fool you into thinking that this is some cosy little mystery. The magic is still sharp and we are always left wondering a little at Cordi herself. Sal makes an appearance and as ever manages to create more questions than answers. There is also one of the most gruesome murder scenes I have ever read. Warning - read on an empty stomach! The story as ever was gripping, Cordi and her friends were completely engaging and Logan was even more delightful than ever. The only bad part about this book was turning the last page. A must read.

I have enjoyed this series immensely and volume 6 is no exception. The characters and their relationships with one another continue to develop. I felt that Discord matured and I think in the future, others will find it much harder to manipulate her. She will expect to be treated as an equal. I predict in future books this will come as a bit of a surprise and certain characters will need an adjustment period. Her lovable collection of dogs was present, but in a lesser degree this time around. I confess that I missed them a bit. Discord assists the police in solving truly gruesome murders. The parts when she must go to the crime scenes reminded me some of such scenes in early Anita Blake books. The descriptions were vivid and I felt I was there smelling the blood and trying to make sense of a nightmarish tableau. Reliving someone’s death isn’t anything I would remotely want to do, especially a violent one. Discord does it with professionalism at the same time showing compassion, horror and a determination for justice. I love to read a book with a heroine who isn’t a perfect Wonder Woman, but also isn’t a whiny, needs-to-be-rescued damsel. I recommend this series.

Bummed. Caught up with the series. My marathon read must end.

The shades of Anita Blake returned a bit. Remember the munin? By the way, not saying it compares in a negative way. The characters are unique. Certain aspects of the world-building just ring familiar. As does the way Discordia finds herself in the center of all these supernatural groups. And she has the same concept of "my people", as in mine to protect.

Dane gave me Jason vibes at one point. Moira sees to match up with Marianne. Logan with Richard with a lot of Micah rolled in. Cerridwen with Raina. Arcane Solutions to Animators Inc. Ectera ectera ectera.

Since I was too busy reading to review the last two....
Book 4 was the club and the people falling into the realm where the Unseelie were asleep.
Book 5 was the stolen magic mirror.
Book 6 was the psycho psychics.

And to rewind.
Book 1 was the faerie grimoire.
Book 2 was the dog fighting and the wild Hunt.
Book 3 was the vampire deaths and the good little vamps/ bad little vamps politics.

4+ stars

I really like this series. They are too long to be called novellas and a bit shorter than the average current UF series novel, but they go down as quickly as novellas.

While Discordia does have a touch of the "special snowflake" trope happening, it's framed in such a way that it's not intolerable or intrusive. It's also another one of the things that is slowly being revealed as the series goes on. One of the things that I love about the series is that Cordi is always growing and learning, there is always character growth for herself and many of the secondary recurring characters.

The stories are engaging, fast paced, and there is just enough romance and smexy to know that it's there but not so much to wonder if this is actually a romance rather than an urban fantasy.

This addition to the series was no exception to the previous ones. I look forward to these books. I consider the series one of my finds of the year.

Good Series

I want to say upfront that I gave book one in this series a 3 star for issues that were fixed as the series progressed. I like Cordi and by book 2 was able to connect with her. Everyone felt disconnected for me in the beginning but as I progressed I was soon enmeshed in the whole world.
I am so glad I picked the series back up. I will be buying the next book when it comes out as well. I think a lot of my problem was how young the main heroine felt at first for her age of 23. The good news is you see a lot of growth in her as the series progresses.
You also fall in love with her friends as you see more and more of who and what they are. All in all it is a solid series and other than the first one I had no problems with any of the rest of the installments or the storyline as a whole. I will say I like Logan and I am so glad he took over as the love interest.

A Little Street Magic begins with Discord is invited to help out on a case. The problem is they are starting to figure out that the person or people doing it may have psychic abilities, and worse they have a lot of very good ones. Now, she must enlist the help of all of her allies in order to figure out who is killing people and why.

Along the way some good things happen with Logan, and herself. She starts to come to terms with who she is now, and what must be done.

This was a great addition to this series! I really adored this book. I love how Logan and Cordi started acting around each other. And I also really enjoyed how she changed some in this one. She was ready to face everything head on and it made her much more likable.

I cannot wait for more now!

What a disappointment.
2.5 stars and I don't know if I rated it so low because the story was really as flat and boring as I felt it to be or if my expectations were too high due to my love for the previous books. I felt the whole relationship overanalyzing of Cordi was a big bore and Logan's role reduced to hold her purse accompanied by yes dear, if that's what you want dear was painful to endure.
Too much me me me. Where did fresh innocently honest Cordi go?
I used to find her delightful, open, honest and natural, being funny without intending to. Now I find her prudish and self-centred.

Ok, I bought all the books in this series in january and I've read the whole serie already twice.
I like it a lot. Also it gets better in rereading it.

Yes the main character is really young (and being three years in a coma does put her in borderline minor area) and almost always she behaves like a 35 years old woman. Also, advancing in the serie, she starts becoming a dog hoarder, but that's a very good thing in my opinion.
That's the only minor problems with the serie.
The rest is just awesome

Read a lot on my vacation!
Love Discord, and loved the natural advancement in her romantic relationship. Her abilities seem to be increasing and she is learning to harness them. Discord grows up quite a bit in this book, and I found I like that a lot. It would be nice to get more hints as to the big picture for Discord and why she has so many supernatural abilities, this is dragging a bit.

Typical Jones book

This was a usual book in the series, where she is surrounded with friends and family while she investigates crime. In this book she has matured some. There was not a lot of action until the end and to me, it was anticlimactic. Yet, I still enjoyed the book and will continue to read the series.
