My feelings about this book have changed several times while reading. I've just finished and am now on a high, almost sorry that the story has come to an end.
It's definitely a book you have to invest a bit of time and patience in. It would have been easy to give up after only a few chapters, as the plot was confusing and there are so many characters. But I don't give up on books, I percivere, and I'm glad I did.
This hard hitting story is set in the early 1960's in Liverpool. It has prostitution, drug barons, teacher monks who abuse their students, a racehorse and a murderer on the loose. Wow, the strands are eventually tied together and I found the second half of the book fantastic, in fact difficult to drag myself away from.
I started off not being too sure about this book, it's subject matter or the way it flitted from one situation and character to another but at some point I became gripped and well now I find myself awarding it four stars. Worth reading.

Too many characters, not enough plot.

I struggled with this book, far too disjointed for me. Lots of characters (too many according to other reviewers) in different situations and locations. It took a long time to come together. I was at least half way through the book before I warmed to any of the characters. This book has not encouraged to read any other books by the author.

I'm sorry to say that I didn't enjoy this book- too many characters and sub plots that didn't seem to add anything to the storyline. I skipped so many sections of the story as it bored me. The writing style didn't appeal to me - it was quite simplistic & childish.
