Another quality eBook from Chapel Library. Christ Is All glorifies Christ. It presents the risen Savior as the Redeemer throughout history and, indeed, without beginning or end. It is a great encouragement both to the seeking soul and the seasoned saint.
(John Charles Ryle) Ryle started his ministry as curate at the Chapel of Ease in Exbury, Hampshire, moving on to become rector of St Thomas's, Winchester in 1843 and then rector of Helmingham, Suffolk the following year. While at Helmingham he married and was widowed twice. He began publishing popular tracts, and Matthew, Mark and Luke of his series of Expository Thoughts on the Gospels were published in successive years (1856-1858). His final parish was Stradbroke, also in Suffolk, where he moved in 1861, and it was as vicar of All Saints that he became known nationally for his straightforward preaching and firm defence of evangelical principles. He wrote several well-known and still-in-print books, often addressing issues of contemporary relevance for the Church from a biblical standpoint. He completed his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels while at Stradbroke, with his work on the Gospel of John (1869). His third marriage, to Henrietta Amelia Clowes in 1861, lasted until her death in 1889.
What does it mean when Christians who follow the Bible say “Christ is all”? In this booklet author and pastor John Charles Ryle (who is best known by his pen name J.C. Ryle) explains and the biblical passage he looks to is Colossians 3:11 that states Christ is all. This is an adaptation from chapter twenty of J.C Ryle’s classic book Holiness. I appreciate this as a stand alone booklet published by Chapel Library as it is useful for discipleship with others when they might be intimidated by the size of Ryle’s classic; but this booklet form is a great way to wet the appetite for others to dive deeper into Ryle’s spiritual treasure. I had the youths in my church read this as a monthly reading assignment for Sunday school and they did say they enjoyed it; this is a great resource for spiritual conversations! There’s four points on how Christ is all followed by a final point on practical conclusions. The first point is Christ is all in the Counsels of God, the second is Christ is all in the Bible and the third is Christi all in the religion of all true Christians. Finally there’s “Christ will be All in Heaven.” These four points each will breakdown further with subpoints of the various ways Christ is all. Of these four main points I really enjoyed “Christ is All in the Bible” since I’m currently hungry to grow more in the area of biblical theology, and the theme of Christ in the Bible especially in the Old Testament amazes me. Ryle talks about how Old Testament sacrifice anticipates Christ, Abraham’s faith was in looking forward to Christ’s day (see Johhn 8:56), Jacob’s prophecy about Christ to his sons, the ceremonial laws points to Christ, etc. Ryle said “I charge every reader of this paper to ask himself frequently what the Bible is to him…Is it a Bible in which Christ Is all? If not, I tell you plainly, you have hitherto used your Bible to very little purpose. You are like a man who studies the solar system and leaves out in his studies the sun, which is the center of all. It is no wonder if you find your Bible a dull book!” (11). That’s a great point and a great illustration! I love it! As I grow more in my walk with God, I think the awe of how the Bible points to Christ is what fuels my love for him, to persevere under trials, to obey Him when our sinfulness wants to take over and to drive me to confess and repent and seek renewal in Christ. I want to worship Him and truly have “Christ is all”!
Un librito lleno de confrontación sana y saludable que te deja sin argumentos para contradecirlo, pero intenso y penetrante para empoderarte a ir a los pies de Jesús. Gracias hermano Ryle, su amor por las almas aún Dios la usa.
I want to like this book. I do. It’s good. But it frustrated me. There is some good stuff in this book. However, the author was pointing out so many scriptures that pointed to the oneness of God, that he felt it necessary to directly point this out so that he could clarify his firm belief in the Trinity. Now. I understand there is a disagreement between some Christians as to the doctrine of the Trinity and of Oneness theology. For most learned Christians, there is only subtle differences between the two. (Subtle but big or maybe better stated as subtle but important! Basically one is 3 distinct, different persons that make up the one true God, and the other is 3 separate manifestations of the one and only God in relationship to creation.) It gets complicated quickly. My frustration comes in when you are Trinitarian in your beliefs, but when you realize what you are saying strongly points against Trinitarian doctrine, you clarify that you believe in the Trinity. Then you continue to enlighten everyone with more scriptures and discussion that clearly points away from Trinitarian doctrine, so again, you feel the need to clarify. Now. Either scriptures point to the oneness of God or it points to the Trinity. You either believe Trinitarian doctrine or you believe oneness doctrine. The author seemingly rejected Trinitarian doctrine at least four distinct times and then had to make sure everyone knew he still believed Trinitarian doctrine. It was super frustrating. Mind numbing frustrating! I don’t care if you believe Trinitarian doctrine or Oneness doctrine, but to keep clarify your stance and bringing it back to the center of attention because what you are saying is contrary to your beliefs was frustrating. It made me feel like someone who was of the Oneness doctrine should have written the book. Now. In saying that, I do think that the author had some good insights as to who Jesus is! Furthermore, I agreed with the author on a fair number of things. He just frustrated me greatly with his need to clarify his doctrinal stance.
I believe these short books of J.C Ryles' were his sermons, but don't quote me on that. Either way, it was a great book. He didn't pull any punches with this one. Though J.C Ryle lived from 1816-1900, this book was still accurate to today's christian culture. I listened to an audio version of this book and I felt like I was sitting in an 1800's sermon.
"Thousands have no more religious feelings than that of a cat or dog"
Blessings from one reader to you. Christ is all, should be played and written in our hearts. Played in our homes, in our cars, walking, and then played again, once a month would be a blessing to your soul. May Christ be my all, may Christ be your all. Yes, get the book. Very challenging. Is Christ your all? We must answer that question. J C Ryle helps us to see how Christ is our all and our need to see Him as such. I highly recommend this book
Estos escritores para mi tienen un don que no es muy popular en estos días. Esa exhortación que te sacude pero al mismo tiempo es bálsamo a tus heridas. Excelente lectura breve y precisa.
