Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., also known as T.R., and to the public (but never to friends and family) as Teddy, was the twenty-sixth President of the United States, and a leader of the Republican Party and of the Progressive Movement.

He fathered Alice Roosevelt Longworth, a daughter.

He became the youngest President in United States history at the age of 42. He served in many roles including Governor of New York, historian, naturalist, explorer, author, and soldier (posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001 for his role at the Battle of San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War).

Roosevelt is most famous for his personality: his energy, his vast range of interests and achievements, his model of masculinity, and his "cowboy" persona.

When hunting, it is usually the result of the hunt that creates the stories the hunter will share later. With Roosevelt, he is much more likely to be the result of the adventure than the outcome of any of his particular hunts.

There is unlikely to be a better representation of what it means to be an American, a Ranchman, and a Leader than that which Mr. Roosevelt exhibits.

There are some disappointing passages in this book towards Native Americans and unfortunate animals that perhaps should have been left alone, but it is useless to not take note of the period Roosevelt lived through.

I love Teddy Roosevelt. I have had a history crush on him for quite some time but had not read any of his histories or guidebooks yet. As an aside, my book does not have an isbn and the only copyright information I can find indicates it was a 1908 edition. The title that I have is Hunting Tales of the West, Volume 1. With that being said, this really didn't disappoint. He is such a keen and interesting observer, mixing beautiful prose with the more technical. Do I care for hunting? Not a lick! But this book was engaging and should I ever decide to shoot at an animal for sustenance or for sport, Teddy will be in my head. I will certainly remember to shoot from a kneeling or kneed position at the very least.

Stories give a great glimpse into what hunting was like in the Dakotas during the late 1800s - early 1900s. Rooveselt's writing style does tend to get a little redundant at times but it was still a great read.
