What the Marquess Sees

Rate this book
England 1814: He is a marquess with a woman to protect and an assassin to thwart. She is…not nice.

The Marquess of Dansbury is a strong, charismatic man living a charmed life as an agent for the crown. His past isn’t without tragedy, but he is too amiable to allow misfortune to mar his positive outlook on life. Until now…when he finds himself tasked with protecting the one woman in the world he actively disdains, Lady Beatryce Beckett.

Lady Beatryce Beckett is mean. She ruins other women on purpose. She lies. She cheats. She even steals. And she takes particular pleasure in provoking a certain marquess. In short, she’ll do anything to get what she wants: freedom from her abusive father. But she is strong (she’s had to be), worthy (who’d have thought it), and in love… Wait, what?

It will take a special man to see the true woman beneath the surface…and a strong woman to allow him that glimpse. Is the Marquess of Dansbury up to the task?

Amy Quinton writes humorous historicals with heat, often from her back porch in Summerville, South Carolina but sometimes with her BFF at the kitchen table. And only when her dog and three cats allow. (She’s guilty of spoiling them horribly.)

She’s susceptible to shiny things, soft things, leather, trips to the thrift store, Whisky, tattoos, witchy things, Bunco with her Bitches, and men in kilts (particularly her husband)-but not necessarily in that order.

She adores her children (most of the time), finds a lot of humor being married to a Brit (usually), cusses (probably more than she should), and loves to read and write romance (always).

When she finds the time, she loves to crochet, knit, and make jewelry. And longs to travel to the UK every chance she gets.

BOOOOOM!

My heartbeat has been overly tested by this novel, I still feel the hungover. This is one of those few romances where I have had a much bigger appreciation for the heroine than for the hero. I did love both, but I must say that Lady Beatryce is an extremely complex character, with her, the reader is always on the edge between disliking and loving her; I found myself more than once in the position to empathise with her and understanding her actions despite the fact that they are obviously wrong.

To be clear, in this case, like in no other previously, I had the impression that the author did not try to dignify the heroine's mean actions; in What the Duke Wants Beatryce is hateful and mean, and I honestly fully detested her, in fact, when I read the confirmation that the heroine of What the Marquess Sees would have been her, I had some hard moments understanding how I could have liked her; however the author did an incredible work with her, Quinton simply prospected Beatryce's wrongdoings as facts and not as a martyr's behaviour.

Beatryce's redemption occurs, in my eyes, because she is a human being who wanted to survive and as such, consciously, acts to save herself, in most cases despite the consequences inflicted on others. She knows that what she has done is not noble but in a way she does not regret it because she put herself and her life before the others'.

This is a very realistic behaviour and it is also the strongest aspect of this story. I have a deep appreciation for those novels where the characters are pictured as real, and not as saints.

If there will be strong negative critiques regarding her "malice", it would mean that probably there had been a lack of identification with the characters and poor reading, honestly, with those circumstances everybody would have behaved in the same way the heroine did.

On the other hand, I fell in love with Cliff, the hero, in the first novel of the Agents of Change series, this story just confirmed my feelings. He has a temper, I like his passion, his sarcasm and his sweetness. Like Beatryce, he is very real and "tangible".

The chemistry between the protagonists is explosive! They are very good together, they tease each other to no limits, they are sharp and so on fire! The author created an extremely catching connection. As said above, my heart suffered many extra beatings here, since page one of the romance.

Concluding, this is a great romance, not inferior to the previous one, quite the contrary, I adored it and I cannot wait for the next novel, I hope we won't have to wait too much. This series is one of those I look forward to keep reading and reading and reading.

Loved it! I think I still prefer book 1 though, and I believe I know why. I didn't like Bea before, although liked her a little better, but not much in this story. To me, Dansbury's personality seemed different at the beginning of this novel, from book 1. Or perhaps not. It might be my memory letting me down again!
Anyhow, I found this to be a fab story. A most enjoyable read. And I love Amy Quinton's writing style. Loved what we heard of from MacLeod. Can't wait for his story (with Dansbury's American sister, maybe?).

Another great read!

There was never a dull moment and the main characters sizzled the entire time. Steamy scenes and laugh out loud moments make this a definite keeper!

I really enjoyed reading What a Marquess Sees by Amy Quinton. It is the second book in the Agents of Change series. Non stop action that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

This book has spies, traitors, abuse, steamy love scenes, weddings, love, passion, and much more. If you want an action packed book, this one is for you!!

I read it a few days ago, and it took me a few minutes to remember the plot! That says a lot, doesn't it?

- Great plot ruined by silly anachronisms.
- The heroine's story needed a lot more justice and delicacy, which was sorely lacking
- It is supposed to work as a stand-alone, but I felt like I missed a lot of plot points

What The Marquess Sees
By: Amy Quinton

Bullies come in all forms. And they come in the form of small petite ladies. Lady Beatryce Beckett was a terrible bully. She was mean and spiteful and ruined anyone that got in her way. She would even be mean purely just to be mean. To say she was not liked would be an exaggeration. Who could like her?

The Marquess of Dansbury didn't like her, at all. At first, he thought she was attractive. But then, he was treated to her behavior. He finds her presence repulsive. This strong, charming, extremely handsome man who rarely found any lady distasteful found this one very objectionable. Dansbury is a man of optimism. He always sees the glass half full. However, being charged to protect this dreadful woman clouded his day. But having sworn an oath as an honorable spy for the British Government, he will see this assignment through, even if he would rather not.

Beatryce is thrilled. She was attracted to the Marquess of Dansbury while betrothed to the Duke. Who could not be? But she never gets as much as the time of day from this man. How could she possibly be so lucky as to have him protect her? Her only objective was her freedom. She wants to find a life, safe, away from the danger of the assassin. It can be a simple life. To leave her father, she was willing to marry the Duke, a man she knew she could barely tolerate. But that plan fizzled when her beautiful good cousin came into the picture. If only she could trust him. But she couldn’t trust anyone. Everyone in her life has failed her. She realized that she could only depend on herself. No one understood what she wanted in life – just a life, a simple little life. They never bothered to know her, find out who she was. Yes, she is mean, but that is because she is frightened and because people have hurt her. She needs to protect herself because she only has herself. Well, correction. For now she has the Marquess of Dansbury to protect her. She may survive this somehow.

Two extraordinarily good-looking people, mutual attraction and lack of trust can lead to quite an adventure. The Marquess of Danbury might have hated the thought of protecting her, but he could never deny the attraction for her. And Beatryce knew that there was an attraction towards him. Dansbury is one of the most efficient trackers, and therefore, most deft at not being tracked, in the country. Yet he finds the assassin seems to be almost in lock step with them. Could there be someone on the inside that is a trader to the Crown? How will the Marquess and Lady Beatryce endure each other’s company for what could be a very long time? Can they possibly not act on their attraction for one another, or will something more menacing loom in their future?

Amy Quinton’s second story in her Agents of Change series comes to life on page one and never slows down until you close the book. Beatryce and Dansbury find themselves in so many odd situations, with barely a step in front of the man that would possibly kill them both. The question is…how? And who is the assassin? Quinton fills her pages with humor, mystery and of course, lots of great romance. The reader, and I can speak from experience, just hangs on, turning the pages as fast as they can turn. I think she is a new writer with an ‘old writer’s soul.’ Quinton writes as if this is her fiftieth book instead of just her second. Her story is witty, her plot is fresh, and her characters spring to life. You honest-to-goodness like the mean, bully Beatryce! How does that happen? Read the book and find out.

This is definitely a five star book. Be sure and put this one in your cart!

What the Marquess Sees by Amy Quinton is the second book in her Agents of Change Series. I haven't had the opportunity to read the first book, but this one was easily read as a stand alone one.

The story revolves around Cliff, The Marquess of Dansbury, who is a spy for the Crown. At the beginning of the story he has his first encounter with Lady Beatryce Beckett. From the shadows on a patio he sees her and immediately falls in lust with her. He is fascinated by her, but before he gets an opportunity to meet her, he finds out through a conversation he overhears her having, that she is actually a horrible woman, one who has no qualms about destroying people's reputations.

A year later Beatryce is set to wed Ambrose, The Duke of Stonebridge, who is a good friend of the Marquess. It's an arranged marriage, and Ambrose is actually in love with another woman, Grace. At the last minute much to Cliff's amazement, but happiness, Ambrose comes to his senses and decides he can't go through with the marriage. Bea is horrified when she finds out because The Duke was to be her escape from her wicked father, who not only made her the way she is, but who also is part of a secret society that Cliff has been investigating for the Crown. Bea has a lot of information about what her father has done or knows about, including murder, and now that her marriage and means of escape has been taken away from her she is frightened for her life.

She beseeches the Marquess to help her escape her father and lets him know that she has all the information about the society and her father that he could want. He doesn't want to help her, but when Bea's father is murdered and the assassin sends a note to her implying she is next, he knows he must help keep her safe, and that is how the pair are thrust together in this story.

From there there is mystery and intrigue and a few huge twists that I didn't see coming about who is trying to get to Bea. All the way through the book there is a sense of peril because the couple are on the run. And of course, as this is a romance book, there are feelings developing between the couple despite neither of them wanting them. There are some very passionate love making scenes too, and here lies the main negative thing I have to say about this book. The scenes were too much like erotica for my tastes. Some too in-depth descriptiveness which just wasn't necessary in a book of this type.

The other problem I have with this book is that some of the wording and scenes seemed too modern for the time era the story takes place in. Bea exercises to work off her upset and stress, doing sit ups, push ups and the such. Did women even know of those exercises back then? As for the modern words, they were ones like ass, buns, blockhead, stuff it, and f**k you. They just didn't sit right in the story. At times it felt like a contemporary author was making her first attempt at historical romance, and it just didn't meld.

That said, I still loved the story, and particularly enjoyed some of the funny scenes in the book that had me laughing out loud. I also would still highly recommend this book but with a little aside telling you to expect the erotica and the modern phrasing here and there.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved being surprised and What the Marquess Sees, definitely surprised me. Truly loved this book and Beatryce and Cliff.

I have not read the first book in Agents of Change but had no trouble reading this book as a standalone.

In the beginning I really wanted to hate Beatryce but as the book progresses my feelings about her changed to respect and admiration. Loved the Marquess from the start and only grew to love him more. The banter was entertaining to say the least.

I love the time period; the speech, dress and mannerisms. This historic romance hit all the marks for me. Amy Quinton is a skilled author and perfectly set the scene for me and told me a story of lies, deceit, abuse and yes love.

Quinton had quotes from numerous different people at the beginning of each chapter that we so fitting for each respective chapter.

Aunt Harriet is a gem and I couldn't help but love her and want her for my own Aunt.

The back and forth between Beatryce and Cliff is enough to keep me entertained even without all the mystery and danger going on as well.

"She looked angry, but only for an instant. Then, her look turned sultry and heavy-lidded; seduction emanating out of every pore. He was a little worried by that second look; it spelled trouble in absolute terms. She stepped closer. He took it back. He was a lot worried actually."

Even though neither want to admit nor give in to the attraction, they both feel it from the first moment. Marquess is angry with Lady Beatryce for her inexcusable behavior and wants nothing to do with her, other than to cut her with his mean tongue. Then he is strapped with protecting her and is exposed to a different side of Beatryce and her to a different side of the Marquess.

Great story and I look forward to reading the first in this series. Would recommend this book to any romance readers. Historic romance reader will love it.

I was gifted a copy for an honest review.

Do you love a good book with spies and traitors? One with a protective, loving hero, and a strong, willful though very cruel heroine? If you answered YES to one or both of those questions then this book IS for you.

I absolutely loved book one in this series and was truly looking forward to reading this one. I needed to know how Beatryce was going to redeem herself and how the charming, charismatic Cliff Danbury was going to protect her with out killing her. Amy Quinton did a wonderful job showing me why Beatryce is the way she is and forcing me to like her. She writes Beatryce to perfection, showing her selfish, aloof, nasty exterior isn't all its perceived to be. The way Amy presents Danbury is captivating. You can truly see and feel his struggle with his emotions and feelings towards Lady Bea and with the situation that they are in. Both characters have a way of captivating the reader, making you want to know more and see where things go from beginning to end.

These two must proceed with caution when it comes to their safety and their hearts. There is so much adventure, deception, angry, and betrayal that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are twists and surprises that you won't see coming and that will have you gasping out loud.

Amy does an excellent job answering all the questions about this couple as well as leaving you asking more questions about the secondary characters and the main conflict in the series. though the is is book 2 in the series and it can be read as a stand alone, I would HIGHLY recommend reading What the Duke Wants first because the main conflict in this book starts in that one. I am impatiently waiting for book 3. I need to know more and I want to know what is going to happen next.

Amy Quinton writes a fabulous story that brings to mind a mix of two of my favorite authors, Christi Caldwell and Shana Galen.

This is definitely a must read for historical romance readers.

I didn't like the heroine, Beatryce, who was the antagonist in book 1. The changes in characters and twists are too far fetched, not credible. Like in book 1, the story in book 2 is left unfinished. I read book 2 because I was curious and wanted to know. But I was too disappointed and won't read book 3.

I just didn't care for this book. This is an enemies-to-lovers trope, something I don't mind most of the time, but Lady Beatryce and Dansbury were far too mean to each other and it went on too long for either of them to be redeemed.

She was mean to everybody, especially Dansbury, was manipulative, and just hateful in general. She set out to ruin her cousin just so she could marry the duke her cousin was in love with. It didn't stop there and her main target was Dansbury. The way she acted toward him, the things she said to him made me cringe. She was the farthest thing from a lady that I've ever read, but she didn't hold herself out to be one.

Dansbury was no better. He thought her to be a trollop, among other things. He absolutely loathed her and made no bones about it and didn't bother to try to hide it. At one point he asked her how she could be so beautiful yet so ugly or something along those lines. It came out of nowhere and it was uncalled for.

We're not talking sarcastic bantering here. We're talking about outright cruelty on both their parts and it went on for so long, I was tempted to not finish the book. I don't know why he hated her with such venom and why it was such a delight for him to break the news to her that she was jilted when there were a thousand guests in attendance of the wedding that was supposed to be the biggest event of the year. She took it well and made a bargain for him to give her protection in return for evidence against her father.

The only reason I continued to the end was because I wanted to find out who the mysterious man in the black cloak was, although I suspected long before the end of the book. He was a great antagonist and gave a bit of an eerie feel to the story. I did like that element and the mystery and adventure overall.

I don't know if reading the first book in the series would've explained why Beatryce and Cliff (Dansbury) hated each other so much or not. Frankly, I don't care enough to go back and find out. It is explained why Beatryce is the way she is, but a part of me thinks it was just an excuse to get what she wanted, while a small part of me understands.

This was a bit over the top for me, but I know many others will enjoy it.

Utterly charming! Lady Beatryce is not a simpering debutante. She will never be a proper lady by society standards. She has been forced to harden herself against the cruelty of life. Desperation has been her constant companion, so will anyone ever see the real Beatryce? Lord Dansbury was entranced from first seeing Lady Beatryce, but sadly that feeling turned sour when faced with the hard reality that was Lady Beatryce. In that moment, he learned to hate her. But what is hatred if not passion, and passion more often leads to love. When forced to take Lady a Beatryce on the run to protect her, they soon are faced with the impossible situation of fighting that passion. So much tension and angst leading to their happily ever after, but in the end is an overwhelming amount of love and joys their family comes together. An ending full of happy tears, and endless joy.

ahhhh! I just love FMC's personality so much. This kind of tough-talking but soft-hearted FMC will always be my favorite. I always feel heartbroken thinking about the reasons why they developed such a personality. The MMC and FMC adapted to each other before they trusted each other, and I really like their interactions. Also, I must thank the author for not giving FMC's self-healing ability to someone else. She was indeed a strong person from beginning to end.

With a plot that brings together an honorable spy and a selfish, arrogant Lady of the Ton what could possibly go wrong? Bea and Cliff lead me on one funny, sexy and tension filled journey. Dodging assassins and searching for trust, truth and justice it is surprising how similar their individual quests could be! This was a great weekend read that caught my interest and didn’t let go!

Bought this book for free on prime and thought I’d give it a chance.

This is definitely my favorite out of the Agents of Change series. I love Dansbury’s nature and hated Beatrice’s, but loved their dynamic together. Beatrice softens throughout the book, falling for Dansbury’s charming ways, while still managing to stay true to herself and not become a damsel in distress.

Although Beatrice’s attitude rubbed me the wrong way, Amy Quinton does a good job of painting the picture as to why she is the way she is, and my heart broke for Beatrice the more I read.

I love a good dynamic of a strong woman, who doesn’t have to be strong all the time when finally meeting the right guy. Cheesy, but here we are.

Well written but....

I absolutely adored the first book in the series and was looking forward to this one. However I didn't realise the heroine in this book would the villain of the first. The author did such a good job in making me hate her that for me there could be no redemption for her. Wish the hero could have been pared with someone else because he was a wonderful friend in the first book and deserved someone better in his story.

I have just discovered this writer. Love the first two books of Agents of Change. Her characters are wonderful, even those very flawed. I really enjoyed these stories and just purchased the third. So happy I discovered her. As an aside, she lives in my town of Summerville, S.C. ! What a nice surprise.

Amazing

I have to say, after book 1, I never thought Bea could be redeemed. Quinton did an amazing job at putting humanity in an initially awful character. I love both Bea and Cliff. So much emotion and intensity. I also loved the humor. Great scenes that had me laughing and crying.. What a great book and I can't wait to see where the plot leads.
