Less than three weeks from the moment 34-year-old Rhapsody Blue first set her eyes on 21-year-old Malcolm Washington, her life has been turned upside down. It was lust at first sight, and Rhapsody isn't going to let young Malcolm leave her presence without a promise to fulfill her fantasy.Malcolm had no idea when he accepted Rhapsody's invitation to her bedroom that he was selling his soul to the devil. Malcolm thinks he can bed Rhapsody and simply walk away, but she is not one to settle for a one night stand. Rhapsody goes to desperate measures to keep her cub extremely close to her. Gifting Malcolm a very expensive SUV, filling his belly with home cooked meals and funding a trip to Cancun are just a few of the tactics that Rhapsody uses to ensure that Malcolm spends his nights in her bed and no one else's. However, when Rhapsody finds a mysterious package on her doorstep containing proof of Malcolm's betrayal and deception, she seeks revenge and seals her own fate.
I did not see this coming! Lawd, Rhapsody is crazy! She made me so mad, but I couldn't stop reading the story. I kept saying "REALLY!?" and "YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!" and "WOWWWWW" and also "no this heifer didn't!" Bless her heart. This is a page turner for real.
Emotionally exhausting tale of anger? misery? I'm just not sure
This is my third book by this author, so I am aware of her talent and was ready to enjoy this book. I listened to this book on audio. I’m going to preface my review with the fact that maybe if I had read the book, the way the characters came across might have been different. I was exhausted after listening to this book. I know I am in the minority with how I felt after listening to this book, but again maybe this went over my head.
The heroine was so despicable throughout most of the story that I struggled to complete it. I am not sure what the author’s intent was with this story. What did she hope her audience would gain, learn, experience from this tale? Maybe, the book went over my head. I felt disgust, disbelief back to disgust. I read the summary and I knew based on that there would be drama. I thought the storyline had potential.
This felt like a teenage “love gone wrong” story. The over the top, erratic emotions, volatile actions, tantrums, and juvenile conversations reinforced my belief that this was a young adult tale of what happens when you obsess and fabricate relationships that do not exist. I was even more certain that her mental instability went beyond the TS after the #2 incident at the doctor’s office, the vacation conversation with her boss, the airport incident and that was just a few examples.
Questions or comments that popped up throughout my listen. 1. How does a volatile, angry, mentally stunted & downright nasty person maintain a relationship of any kind whether it be personal or professional? 2. What type of mental illness did the heroine suffer from that caused such negative reactions from her. This is not all from the TS. 3. With the biting, sarcastic & overly dramatic attitude/responses is Rhapsody even capable of having an adult conversation?” 4. She’s 34, but with the mental capacity of a teenager? Her interactions with everyone supports this assumption. Is this what readers are supposed to get from her? 5. What happened in her history to get her to this level of nastiness, insecurity & desperation? 6. Even with Malcolm’s “youthful” idiotic decisions that were led by his “little head”, he still came across more mature than Rhapsody. 7. Drama started from the on-set, danger signs and all Malcom stayed. Materialism is a powerful beast.
Pros Storyline had potential Malcom’s character rang true to the age that was set Rhapsody’s insecurity & desperation will be relateable for some
Cons Heroine was utterly ridiculous most of the time Wordy, unnecessary details Rough narration delivery Certain scenes were disgusting & held no value to the scene or story
My audible comments 1. What would have made The Ugly Side of Me better? The backstory on why the heroine was who she was and why she treated people so horribly
2. What was most disappointing about Nikita Lynnette Nichols’s story? As a reader, I was not sure what the author wanted her audience to gain/experience from this story.
3. What didn’t you like about Lynnette Freeman’s performance? The delivery was extremely rough. The transition to the male character came across as if she was out of breath. I normally like her performances. She was just the wrong choice for this particular story.
4. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? I only felt two things - disgust & disbelief
When 34-year-old Rhapsody goes to a drive thru to pick up her food, she is smitten immediately with 21-year-old green-eyed Malcolm. She pursues a relationship with him, but he reminds her they are just friends. Rhapsody thinks that "buying" Malcolm will make him commit to her and only her, but sometimes that doesn't work. When Rhapsody finds out Malcolm is still sleeping with one of his other "girlfriends" she gets a gun, and does a drive-by over to Malcolm's house. Will Rhapsody jeopardize her freedom trying to hold on to this young boy that doesn't want to be "kept?" Read: January 2016

When I tell you this was a good book, I could not put it down. Rhapsody was something else, I definitely would not Want yo see the ugly side of her, i really hope there will be another part to this story, i have to find out what happened in those next three months. Great book Ms. Nichols I really enjoyed it.
How can you ignore crazy when you can see it from the outside? I mean she’s wearing it like clown makeup!! Dude!?! Young & dumb!
Oh my goodness…she is crazy! She did a test call! Blah! Why would you make your crazy friend the godmother of your baby? This book is full of word fillers: the goddaughter’s baptism, the movie about the woman & her kids, the book similar to her life.
Crazy, psycho, and deranged describes the main character. I’m not schooled that the book ended they way that it did but Malcolm knew from day one she was crazy but he kept comin back smh.
Whew chyyy! Baby was certified! She had a lot going on mentally and really needed help. On one hand I can’t blame her though because she low key acts like her mom is towards her dad BUT just because she saw it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. I loved that her best friend was a true bestie. She kept collecting her girl to make her better and she stood 10 toes down so her girl wouldn’t get jumped even though she was the responsive, more mature person. Now I will say, I wouldn’t be opposed to part 2 for the simple fact that Malcolm might not be the daddy. It could be the sugar daddy from work…and I would definitely want front seats for her behavior in jail. My first by this author, enjoyed this read.
Rhapsody really was Kray Kray and immature for 34. What would possess her to date a 21 yr old?? She was just asking for trouble. Malcom was just reaping the benefits of dating a cougar. In the end she had more to loss than he did and in this case it was her freedom. I really would have liked more at the end what happened to the baby? How much time did she get? But who knows maybe there will be a part 2! But overall I enjoyed reading this book it had some lol moments.
This book was a bit disappointing. I felt like I predicted the book before it was over and the main character actually made me so upset, Rhapsody. The best character in the entire book is Anastasia “Stacy.” She was a true friend and she made this book better. It is a page turner, but I wish that there would have been a plot twist.
great read!! A must read!! Definitely would recommend this book to my family and friends! You never what the worst side of you look like until something tragic happens.
This book was so good I could not put it down! Read it in two hours! The first thing that attracted me to the book was the sister with the gorgeous locs on the front cover! Now, let me just say, I have maximum respect for ANYONE who can write, complete, publish and sell a book. Thats a MAJOR accomplishment! What bothers me on occasion though, is when "urban" books, especially "christian" urban books describe their characters as having "hazel, blue or green eyes, light skin, are mixed with asian, puerto rican, white, mexican…" ANYTHING but African! This smacks of self hatred to me and there is nothing sadder than a black person that is not quite comfortable with or as a black person. 2016 Alert…There is not a damn thing wrong with, and everything right with being a chocolate, almond or mocha skinned person with beautiful BROWN eyes and Natural Hair! Every other race covets our tans, our flavor and our assets (pun intended) We need to respect who GOD made us to be more in our proses. Just saying….This book though, was a refreshing exception! I highly Recommended it!
There were definitely some LOL moments in this book. I mean I can totally relate to "I want an oil change don't come out here with that other bs".
Other reviewers have noted that Rhapsody was very immature for her age given that Malcolm was only 21 but I have read other books where the woman is dealing with a man her age doing the same crap. Heck, I've know women in real life that act this way. I am not giving Rhapsody a pass but maybe Malcolm will learn that you cannot play with people's emotions--no matter what their age (especially as women feel things more deeply). I am not saying that he deserve what he got but he gave Karma his address so she had no trouble finding him. Him accepting those extravagant gifts and flat out lying is what took Rhapsody (a woman walking a very fine line) over the edge.
Malcolm also continued to say that she was crazy--not who would go out of the country with a crazy person? Someone selfish and self absorbed.
After being betrayed by those she loved, 34yr old Rhapsody Blue had given up on relationships but one day by chance runs into 21yr old Malcome & IMMEDIATELY falls head over hills in love with him. Will Malcome be her Forever Love or will his young mind & ways cause him to see The Ugly Side of Rhaspody???
A fast paced, thrilling roller-coaster ride from start to finish! The Ugly Side Of Me is a juicy, none predictable, page turning novel filled with drama on top of drama. The story is well written & it draws you in from the Prologue! The characters & situations are real, so that makes for a good story! There are plenty of ooh, ahh moments and some oh heck no moments too. This story is entertaining & will keep you turning pages wanting more. Nikita Lynnette Nichols has done it again.....Kudos!
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*
It was ok. Rhapsody was to incomplete for me to connect with her. She seemed immature for a woman her age who was supposed to be as adult as she was portrayed in other sections. Malcom on the other hand was a 22 year old man who was doing what young men do especially if the have someone else footing the bill. So we can't blame him for being immature because he was. He was definitely not thinking with his brain. I really liked Anastasia and every woman needs a least one friend who loves you enough to tell you, in love, the complete TRUTH about yourself. And the relationship between her and Trevor... well what more could a wife ask for. Even still she was honest about it not always being peaches and cream but work. Anastasia and Rhapsody's friendship and the way they talked with each other was too funny but it was real. That was the best part of the book.
She has done it again. In this story we meet rhapsody blue a 34 year old cta worker. When we meet rhapsody she is,meeting with a therapist for something she did. But we don't find out what it is until much later. In this story we are taken through the relationship of 21 year old Malcolm and 34 year old rhapsody. I'm not going to post spoilers but let me just say rhapsody is coo coo for cocoa puffs. This book has some laugh out loud moments and some moments that, just make you shake your head. It was a great book. I would love to see a sequel to find out what happens to this toxic couple.
Ms. Nichols is an exceptional writer and I always look forward to her books. However, this book was not one of my favorites. It wasn't poorly written or a bad book. The content was just a little too outlandish for me. For those who love drama and incredulity, you will enjoy this read. While not my favorite book by her, Nikita Lynnette Nichols is one of my favorite authors. I encourage anyone who is not familiar with this writer to check her out. Her writings are based on real life experiences with characters involved in situations the everyday person can identify with. I have read the Woman's Worth Series several times.
3.5 stars..... The ugly side? Seemed more like the dominant, crazy side if you ask me. I didn't see much of a pleasant side to say there was more than one side. The story held my attention with Rhapsody's crazy antics and outbursts. I would've liked a little more insight into Malcolm's thought process when dealing with this odd "relationship". There was a part in the book mentioned that left me confused, not sure if it was an error or I missed where it was cleared up but other than that I thought it was well written and entertaining.
I thought Rhapsody acted stupid and embarrassing. This story earned two stars from me because of the common sense feedback her best friend offered, the fact that Rhapsody IS mentally ill, and the parts of the story that had me laughing out loud!
Moral of the story; don't date children...This book was not bad. I wish there was more information on Rhapsody's illness. I wanted to read information on her therapy sessions to determine how she was coping with the illness, but I suppose this was more centered on the drama than the illness.
I have so many questions at the end of the story. The book was not bad. But it is definitely different from her other novels. Both characters continued to make bad decisions and the fact that they really did not know each other personally enough made for a vicious cycle anger and retaliation
