Melanie S’velare is a survivor, the strongest witch in her coven, and a princess. With the key to her magic, the Ace of Hearts, presumably destroyed, her powers continue to grow. As her power increases, her control on them becomes weaker until it is clear she may be the most powerful witch on the planet and the most dangerous. The Alaman, another coven, concerned by her strength, send an ambassador to gauge her control, stability, and how dangerous she truly is. The Alaman are well known for killing witches who pose a threat to their own powerful hold over the globe and if they see fit to end her life, she will have no choice but to fight.

With her soulmate by her side and the remains of her Vanguard, Melanie strives to maneuver a maze of political scandals designed to make her falter. If she fails, she will not only lose her throne to the traitorous Lord Rossi, but also her life to the fiery Alaman.

Melanie can only pray her secret that the Ace of Hearts is alive and manipulating them all in a final deadly game is never revealed.

War has come to Melanie's coven, regardless of what she wants. The Ace of Hearts wants war, and unfortunately that is what is happening. With her coven in tatters, Melanie must come up with enough strength and determination to keep her close group together despite the odds. At least she has Nate at her side, even though she is not sure who else she can trust. Hopefully her group will make it through this alive.

I am absolutely in love with this series. I started out the first book only a few days ago, and I will admit that I was filled with some hesitation because it seems like everything I have read recently has been just kinda blah to me. I was surprised to find myself instantly engaged in this world, right from the moment that I started book one and found myself just as clueless as Melanie in this topsy turvy world with no rules in play. I sped through the first book and instantly picked up the second because I could not do anything but read what happened next.

The author is able to create such a story filled with magic and monsters, but also with emotions too and the ability to draw feelings out of the reader. The twists and turns kept me on my toes since I could never even guess what would happen next. I will admit that I was completely shocked by the ending and I don't want to give anything away because spoilers are frowned upon, but I was shocked and horrified. The ending alone is why I gave the book 4.5 stars instead of 5 because it made me so upset. Not enough to not read the next book, mind you, but upset enough to write a strongly worded letter expressing my hurt. Alas, I need book 3 like NOW so that I can get answers and hopefully find out that the ending was a lie.
If it is not a lie, I don't know...

Anyway, tangent aside, I am so enamored with this world full of witches, shapeshifters, soul-sucking demons, Tarot card systems and personalities, court intrigue, mystery, romance, magic and fighting. I strongly suggest for anyone who likes magic or witches, or actually anyone looking for something new, to pick up this series. The books must be read in order, but aremfast engaging reads that will suck you in. I so enjoyed this book and can't wait for more.

I was given this book in exchange for my honest review, but I actually ended up buying both books in the series because I needed to own my own (because I am a super nerd).

Cried at the end. Nate was just ugh love love love him. And Jack he surprised me at the end. Wow didn’t expect that twist in the story.

Nate was the soulmate for Melanie. Melanie is the most powerful witch in the world but also had the Ace of Hearts on her and kept this from others. She struggled with family, her place in the coven, the guilt of what happened to some of her vanguard, her conflicting feelings and the power struggle. She felt guilt over her brother Ollie who is one of her biggest allies and one who understands the danger of her world more than she does. He helps her fight all that is going on around her. Guilt over her Vanguard and keeping secrets. Guilt over her family fighting.

She had to fight someone in want of power. Watch the man take control of her coven and mom through forcing a type of loyalty. It is scary what Rossi was able to do and his actions. Watching his plot unfold and seeing it put into play was scary, addictive and horrible as well. We have some losses that touch deeply as we see some great characters be lost in more ways than one.

Watching the fight for control of the Ace of hearts, fight Rossi and her mom, fall in love, form alliances with Falco and deal with her vanguard is impressive. It was her brother who helped her navigate the political arena. JAck her vanguard but best friend as well who was there to protect and support but also help with Falco. Luciana who kept it real and Nate who supported and love unconditionally. Her dads who gave unending support. One by telling her things and warning her the other by supporting and encouraging her. He loved her with no strings. That was just amazing to see in the light of her mom and how stiff and formal she was.

This is the story of Melanie fighting for control of the ace of hearts, having to fight for her coven and Rossi and see the plans of the ace unfold. We see danger, fun, action, heartache and pain. We see revenge desired and unlikely bonds and alliances form. The characters draw you in the story keeps you enthralled and the emotions will take over as you read this intriguing story of power struggles, love and loyalty. Can’t wait to read the next book..

Wow!! What's not to love about this book!! I've read the other books in this series and I was able to pick right up from where the last one left off. I feel like I know the characters~~ that's how believable Ms Kells writes about them.
I'm a 63 yr old grandmother and I realize that this series is rated YA, but it has really grabbed my interest. The storyline, tho paranormal and fantasy, is so believable.
Very intriguing with twists and turns, and what an ending!! Which had better not be the end!! I want more of Princess Melanie and her awesome powers. This book put me through a lot of different emotions~~ sad, happy, romantic, upset~~ the whole gambit. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who can read.
