While first reading these tiny essays, prose poems--whatever name you choose for these fine observations of the Southwest-- I intended to contact Jim Sagel. My excitement turned into frustration and sorrow when I learned that he couldn't survive in the extraordinary beauty he wrote about, committing suicide before I could tell him that he writes the soul of this high desert, the answer to the question, "Why do you come here?"

I had the joy of being in many of Mr. Sagel's creative writing courses in college. He was awesome. He would read from his books to provide his students examples of different types of writing and styles. We did get other authors as well, but it was neat to see what he was writing next. He loved New Mexico and the culture there. His writing captures the essence and flavor that is New Mexico.
