“All is perspective. One might say, while awaiting a taxis in Paris, ‘It’s like waiting for a Disneyland ride.’ Another might say, while awaiting a Disneyland ride, ‘It’s like waiting for a taxi in Paris.’ Science is full of such things.”
Quitting Science reads like a Dear John letter to science, faith, and rock n' roll, or a Kerouac pastiche for Generation Y. That's a forewarning of pretension, by the way; the book is geeky fun, and I think it would be enjoyed even by people who've never heard Bern's music, but there are some eye-roll-worthy moments to accompany the spot-on sociological observations and passages of unexpected beauty. The chronicles of Dan Bern's globe-trotting, atom-smashing band - er, band of SCIENTISTS - are well worth a read.
Qualification for my library-friends: not really recommended for teenagers. Too much nostalgia and unveiled frustration over 2004's political climate. I laughed, I teared up, I had to wikipedia a couple of things, and I was repeatedly offended by objectification. See comparison to On the Road, etc. Recommended, just not sans-warnings.
This book is perfect. If you are a fan of Bern's music, you will see all sorts of references, he claims he is a traveling scientist, blowing up things, "doing science", I try to read it several times a year.
