For take-no-prisoners tycoon Hunter Dolan there was nothing more delicious than payback. Ten years after his passionate nights with Lily Fontaine--and the Fontaines' fatal betrayal of Hunter's family--bitterness still fueled his success. Now he was this close to destroying the Fontaine empire and ultimate victory.
Luring Lily back to his bed was the master stroke in his revenge plot; having the socialite bear him the child he'd long been denied would be a just desert.
A typical Piscean, USA Today! Best-selling author, Yvonne Lindsay, has always preferred the stories in her head to the real world. Yvonne is a five-time Romance Writers of Australia R*BY nominee and three-time nominee and 2015 winner of the Romance Writers of New Zealand Koru Award of Excellence. She spends her days crafting the stories of her heart and in her spare time she can be found with her nose firmly in someone else’s book.
I am disgusted to have this book on my read list, I hated every chapter with a burning passion, right up until the last couple of chapters. The last section made me understand what I was reading, and I realised my standards were far too high for what I had forced my poor eyes and brain to sit through. I could handle it as the story came to a close, but the main character was the most pathetic push over I have ever experienced in a book. To have this excuse for a character be contrasted with an over the top psychopath intelligent businessman was overkill to the extreme. I felt nothing but frustration and anger throughout the whole length of the book. The way it was written, the inconsistencies in character personalities, history and motives, but most of all: the characters in general. I understand this was not made to be an intellectual story with a well constructed plot and character development, it’s a soft-core quickie. The last few chapters change the characters completely to what you as the reader wanted them to be all along: expressing somewhat normal emotions. Anyway, I thought I’d give this genre a try. Big mistake, but what can I expect out of the $1 bargain bin.
Revenge is sticky. Lily is way too forgiving, her father a complete jerk, and Jack is just a hurt man that is destroying hundreds of lives just for the joy of striking back at Lily's father. Yikes.
Fast read filled with angst, deception, and a rekindled flame.
3.5* After randomly reading a couple of Silhouette Desire books and DNF...I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book. Never read this author before so will look out for more.
The plot is fast paced and being a second chance/revenge romance, I'm happy the back story was revealed naturally and not via confusing flashbacks which is the usual way.
My heart went out to both Jack and Lily...yes the hero's name is Jack and not Hunter as per the blurb.
Jack's father was Lily's father's right hand man at work but he went berserk trying to separate Lily and Jack because he looks down on staff? What he did next was really unforgiveable. ..all in the name of living Lily.
The last setting was really heartbreaking. The book ended with some loose ends for me, so if they had been tied up in an epilogue I'd give this a 4*!
SPOILERS!!!!!
THE children's section of a cemetery was just heartbreaking! Jack's pain and Lily's hug of comfort despite the ill will between them showed how much Lily loved him...
I wish we had an epilogue so we'd know if they had more babies together and how Jack handled Lily's father...did he hang on as a vegetable? Did he die without face to face resolution with Jack?
I listened on Audible — I experimented with the narration speed because it wasn’t a good recording for me — finally keeping it on 1.5. I also had trouble with some of the vernacular since this was set in New Zealand and used some of the King’s English and terms. When I finally got use to the narration and terminology, the story turned out ok - but as others have said kind of ends in a weird spot — lots of loose ends. Characters were likable and believable. Plot and setting were fine. Mixed feelings on If I’d read this author again — but maybe if it was tying up the loose ends in this story!
To bad I can't find the version in Dutch or English to review. I've read this book in Dutch, "Gedreven door wraak". The fact that I can not find the right translation makes sense because I can't imagine that this is a book that a lot of people liked reading.
I did not like it, I don't really like 2nd chances theme (mainly because both of them slept with numerous other people in the 10 years.) I basically didn't like the plot or characters on the whole. P.
