An excellent and fair look at the controversy surrounding the Shroud of Turin. Well-written and researched, it doesn't take a stance on whether the author thinks it is genuine or not, but rather presents all the information (as known in 1977, before the Shroud of Turin Research Project, or STURP, did their big study of the Shroud in 1978) and lets the reader decide. Fascinating subject.

An incredible and fascinating read! This is about the history and mystery of the Shroud of Turin and whether it is truly the burial cloth of Jesus. If you like history and mysteries, I highly recommend this book.

Το Σάβανο του Ιήσου είναι μια έρευνα του συγγραφέα Ian Wilson που έχει σπουδάσει Ιστορία στην Οξφόρδη για το αν η σινδόνη του Τουρίνου είναι πράγματι το σάβανο του Ιησού μετά τον μαρτυρικό του θάνατο στο σταυρό. Η σινδόνη εμφανίζεται για πρώτη φορά στον δυτικό κόσμο το 1300 μ.Χ. και ο συγγραφέας προσπαθεί να ανακαλύψει αν υπήρξε προγενέστερη αναφορά της στην ιστορία. Καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα, μέσα από αποδείξεις - ενδείξεις που επικαλείται, αλλά και τα αποτελέσματα κάποιων επιστημονικών ερευνών που έγιναν στο λινό αυτό ύφασμα, ότι η σινδόνη είναι το Μανδήλιον του Χριστού που ανακαλύφθηκε στην Έδεσσα και μεταφέρθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη περί το 900 μ.Χ. και εκ των υστέρων ότι είναι το κεφάλι για το οποίο κατηγορήθηκαν οι Ναϊτες ότι προσκυνούσαν. Πραγματικά είναι ένα συναρπαστικό ανάγνωσμα και πολλές από τις θεωρίες του συγγραφέα δείχνουν πειστικές και λογικές, αλλά προσωπικά μου φαίνονται ως ενδείξεις που τις έχει παρατραβήξει μιας και ο ίδιος με κάθε ειλικρίνεια ομολογεί ότι πιστεύει στη γνησιότητα της σινδόνης του Τουρίνου. Παρόλα αυτά προσπαθεί και είναι αντικειμενικός και εκθέτει και τις αντίθετες απόψεις. Εγώ δεν πείστηκα για τη γνησιότητα της σινδόνης γιατί την εποχή που πρωτοεμφανίζεται περί το 1300 μ.Χ., 2 επίσκοποι αρμόδιοι για την περιοχή που εμφανίστηκε η σινδόνη αρχικά ο Ερρίκος του Πουατιέ κι έπειτα ο Πιερ Ντε Σαρνί με μνημόνιό του προς τον Πάπα που υπάρχει στο βιβλίο ήταν πεπεισμένοι ύστερα από έρευνες που έκαναν ότι είναι πλαστή. Μάλιστα ο Πιέρ Ντε Σαρνί αναφέρει ότι γνωρίζει και το ζωγράφο που την κατασκεύασε. Αυτό όμως που προσωπικά μου προκαλεί υποψίες είναι ότι βρέθηκε στα χέρια ενός φτωχού ιππότη και η έκθεσή της γινόταν σε μια φτωχή εκκλησία, σε μια εποχή που τέτοια ιερά λείψανα έφερναν κέρδος και φήμη. Εξάλλου ο ίδιος ο ιππότης πήρε την άδεια να εκθέτει το ύφασμα αυτό ως ομοίωμα κι όχι ως το αυθεντικό σάβανο του Ιησού. Σε κάθε περίπτωση το βιβλίο είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον και σε βάζει σε μια διαδικασία σκέψης και για το λόγο αυτό το συνιστώ ανεπιφύλακτα. Εν τέλει είναι θέμα πίστης για το αν κάποιος θα δεχτεί τη γνησιότητα αυτής ή όχι, παρόλο που ο Ιησούς συνήθιζε να λέει ότι αυτοί που τον είδαν δεν τον πίστεψαν και αυτοί που δεν θα τον δουν θα τον πιστέψουν....

Ian Wilson presents many possibilities for the unknown early history of the Shroud, but he is not biased. He goes into the scientific and the historic proofs that the Shroud may be the burial cloth of Christ.

I am not a religious person, but this book was amazing! The theories and science that were discussed were very thought-provoking. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. It will definitely make you think.

A devout atheist myself, I was left feeling a little chuffed but also desiring more evidence. Patently, the shroud is fake but there were far too many gaps left for 'theists' to hang onto. Well written though.
