This is the opener in a new series featuring Beatrice Scarlet, a 17th century female apothecary. Female apothecaries, of course, were virtually unheard of at that time, but Beatrice has been nurtured by her newly deceased father, a very experienced London apothecary who taught her everything he knows.
Unfortunately Beatrice's mother has recently died leaving her still a child, in possession of a house and business in London. When her cousin Sarah, a widow from Birmingham, offers to take her in, she has to accept, not realising that Sarah will take all her inheritance, supposedly for her up keeping. Beatrice becomes the household drudge, and also has to avoid the amorous advances of Sarah's unpleasant son, Jeremy. Sarah's family are strict Calvinists, and life for Beatrice would be unbearable were it not for the friendly glances bestowed on her at church by Francis, the son of the pastor. Several years pass as Beatrice's situation worsens, with Cousin Sarah trying to force her to marry the odious Jeremy. Francis sees what is going on and asks her to marry him.
Scarcely knowing one another, they set sail for New England, where Francis has been offered the post of pastor in a small village, Sutton, in New Hampshire. There they live happily for a year or two, despite Beatrice secretly not going along with Francis' extreme religious convictions. Her happiness blossoms when she gives birth to a son, Noah. When Noah is a toddler, bad things start to happen in Sutton. Francis' and Scarlet's pigs are found dead one morning, with no obvious injury or illness. The local women begin to talk about the possibility of Widow Belknap [who lives on her own in a remote part of the village], being a witch.
The events in the narrative occur several years after the Salem witch trials; so Scarlet is horrified when Francis, who agrees with her that Salem was mass hysteria, expresses his belief that Satan could be using unspecified agents to destroy the village. More animals suffer unexplained deaths and a mysterious and spooky stranger, Jonathan Shooks [who seems to be attracted to Scarlet], offers to negotiate with the local demon, who he claims is acting as Satan's agent. Scarlet is absolutely convinced that the terrible events, as they become more frequent, and move on to human beings, are caused by a human agent, but Francis disagrees with her, although he thinks Jonathan Shooks is evil.
The human deaths get more and more horrific. The pace quickens to a terrible conclusion.
The horror element of the story to me, is lessened by what seems to be the matter-of-fact way the villagers accept events which you would think would drive most of them insane, nevertheless a promising start to a new series.

Well knock me over with a feather. If I had not known that Graham Masterton had written this book I never would have guessed. He has taken his writing expertise into a whole other direction. Graham is famous for his horror novels and his graphic crime series featuring Katie Maguire set in Cork, Ireland but this historical horror/thriller really is something else altogether.
I was totally sold on the synopsis:
London, 1750: Beatrice Scarlet is the apothecary's daughter. She can mix medicines and herbs to save the lives of her neighbours - but, try as she might, she can't save the lives of her parents. An orphan at just sixteen, Beatrice marries a preacher and emigrates to America.
New Hampshire, 1756: In the farming community where Beatrice now lives, six pigs are found viciously slaughtered; slices of looking-glass embedded in their mouths. According to scripture, this is the work of Satan - but Beatrice Scarlet suspects the hands of men. As she closes in on the killer, she must act quickly to unmask him - or become the next victim herself...
We meet Beatrice at different stages in her life with the majority of the book based around her life in New Hampshire married to the local man of the cloth, the local Preacher. Her love for natural medicines, salves, liquids and healing through apothecary is somewhat at loggerheads with her husband's strong faith that the Lord God heals all. Beatrice has seen too much and learned too much from her Father to just put her knowledge and skills aside.
There is a menacing undercurrent in the book as strange and evil events start to disrupt this small and strongly God-fearing community. Beginning with sick and dying animals and escalating to brutal human death and suffering the town is asking itself if the devil himself is walking amongst them and what does he want in return, why is he focusing on them.
With Beatrice's husband driving the devil out with prayer and fervour Beatrice is using her mind to try to piece together a picture of what is going on that is destroying this town and sucking the life blood out of it. It's an atmospheric story with some truly wonderful and creepy characters. Some scenes are a bit gruesome but not that bad and if you think you know the ending, think again, you are probably going to be wrong.
I really enjoyed this book, the plot is steady and it's a beautifully written book, weaving in just enough of the darkness to keep the chills in your bones as you read it. At times incredibly sad and at other times a book I wanted to scream at this one won't be forgotten in a hurry. 4.5 stars for Scarlet Widow. I like where Graham Masterton took this book.

February 18, 2019Η αλήθεια είναι ότι περίμενα ένα διαφορετικό βιβλίο με βάση τη φήμη του συγγραφέα, όμως, δεν με απογοήτευσε. Παρόλο που γίνονται τρομακτικά ή πιο σωστά απεχθή πράγματα στο βιβλίο δεν θα έλεγα σε καμία περίπτωση ότι πρόκειται για βιβλίο τρόμου, τουλάχιστον όχι μεταφυσικού τρόμου όπως εννοούμε συνήθως. Περισσότερο θα έλεγα ότι είναι αστυνομικό που διαδραματίζεται στο 16ο αιώνα και μας μεταφέρει εν μέρει τη ζωή και τις δεισιδαιμονίες των ανθρώπων που αποίκησαν το Νέο Κόσμο.
Δεν ήταν καθόλου άσχημο πάντως και το διάβασα με ευχαρίστηση και ενδιαφέρον. Στρωτή γραφή, απλή αλλά γεμάτη μυστήριο πλοκή και σκληρές περιγραφές είναι τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά. Αν θέλετε κάτι από τον Μάστερτον αλλά ο τρόμος σας προβληματίζει, ίσως αυτό το βιβλίο προσφέρεται για εσάς.

This is a superb historical horror fiction which I loved. Graham Masterton is an expert writer in incorporating suspense and laying the groundwork for an intricately plotted thriller. The story takes place in the 18th century and revolves around Beatrice who practices the art of the apothecary learnt from her father.
Her father was a renowned and gifted apothecary who carried out extraordinary research ably assisted by Beatrice. He fell apart and took to drink when his wife died, and Beatrice did all the work. His murder meant the young Beatrice went to Birmingham to live with her Cousin Sarah. She comes to marry Francis, a pastor, who moves them to New Hampshire. They have a young son, Noah and are happy. However, gruesome and macabre acts start taking place and there is talk of demons, Satan and witches. The villagers are terrified of the growing evil and wickedness and begin to accede to the demands of a sinister Jonathon Shooks to give a large portion of their land to keep a demon happy. Francis is murdered in a particularly horrific manner echoing a biblical scene after he set off to follow Jonathon.
Beatrice has her suspicions that this is not the work of the devil, but of human origin. She begins to investigate in a subtle and behind the scenes way. Francis's murder makes her determined to find out what is going on and avenge his death. It is her knowledge as an apothecary that really helps her get closer to the truth. She and her son are also in mortal danger as the forces she faces are without mercy and ruthless. Beatrice is a worthy, charismatic and courageous heroine, in times when it is difficult for women to be like her. She is clever, compassionate and well connected in the community. She does, however, pay a heavy price in pursuing the perpetrators.
This is an atmospheric and well constructed novel that weaves a spell of compelling suspense. The historical descriptions show that the author engaged in meticulous research. I understand that this is the first in a series, I look forward to the next one! Many thanks to Head of Zeus for an ARC via netgalley.

Αυτός δεν είναι ο Μάστερτον που πιθανότατα έχουμε αγαπήσει οι περισσότεροι, αλλά το βιβλίο δεν είναι κακό. Κάθε άλλο...
Η Πορφυρή Χήρα είναι ένα αστυνομικό θρίλερ εποχής. Είναι σαν να έχεις πάρει τον Dickens Charles και τον Dennis Wheatley, να τους έχεις εξηγήσει τα βασικά του φεμινισμού και να τους βάζεις να γράψουν ένα μυθιστόρημα στο ύφος του Arthur Conan Doyle...
Το βιβλίο ξεκινάει αργά, με τις πρώτες 100 σελίδες αφιερωμένες στο πώς μεγαλώνει η πρωταγωνίστρια στο Λονδίνο του 1800, ενώ ο πατέρας της, ένας ριζοτόμος (κάτι σα φαρμακοποιός της εποχής) της μαθαίνει την τέχνη του. Εδώ έχουμε ένα κείμενο που παραπέμπει στο κίνημα του ρεαλισμού, με όλο το μελόδραμα που το χαρακτηρίζει.
Στη συνέχεια το βιβλίο μας πάει στο Νέο Χάμσάιρ, όπου η πρωταγωνίστρια, γυναίκα πλέον εφημέριου, μένει. Στην πόλη τους αρχίζουν να συμβαίνουν διάφορα περίεργα θανατικά (και όσο προχωράει η πλοκή έχουμε μερικούς πραγματικά άγριους φόνους να αναφέρρονται, χωρίς όμως να περιγράφονται όπως σε παλιότερα έργα του συγγραφέα).
Στο αστυνομικό κομμάτι της πλοκής ο ύποπτος είναι από νωρτίς προφανής, υπάρχουν βέβαια 2-3 τρικ στην πορεία και θες να πας μέχρι τέλους για να επιβεβαιώσεις τι συμβαίνει. Όμως η γραφή είναι απλή και ευκολοδιάβαστη, ο ρυθμός δεν κάνει κοιλιά πουθενά, ο συγγραφέας είναι εξαιρετικός τεχνήτης και ξέρει πώς να γράψει για να περάσεις καλά.
Δεν είναι βιβλίο που με εντυπωσίασε, όμως ήταν ευχάριστο ανάγνωσμα που δε με κούρασε στιγμή.

Θεωρώ ότι δεν ανήκει στην κατηγορία του τρόμου αλλά του μυστηρίου.
Θετικά
✅Η αφήγησή του είναι απλή χωρίς περιττές λεπτομέρειες.
✅Χρησιμοποιεί πολύ έντεχνα τον λόγο για να παρατείνει την αγωνία.
✅Δεν με έκανε να βαρεθώ, αλλά αναζητούσα να διαβάσω τη συνέχεια.
✅Με ταξίδεψε σ’ εκείνη την εποχή.
✅Με κέρδισε η γραφή του και ξέρω ότι θα διαβάσω κι άλλα του βιβλία.
Αρνητικά
❌Νομίζω ότι περίμενα μια πιο σύνθετη λύση του μυστηρίου (όχι ότι δεν ήταν ικανοποιητική αυτή που έδωσε ο συγγραφέας...).

✅Η αφήγησή του είναι απλή χωρίς περιττές λεπτομέρειες.
✅Χρησιμοποιεί πολύ έντεχνα τον λόγο για να παρατείνει την αγωνία.
✅Δεν με έκανε να βαρεθώ, αλλά αναζητούσα να διαβάσω τη συνέχεια.
✅Με ταξίδεψε σ’ εκείνη την εποχή.
✅Με κέρδισε η γραφή του και ξέρω ότι θα διαβάσω κι άλλα του βιβλία.

2.5 stars. This would have been 3.5 stars, but I'm docking a whole star from this book because of the rape scene, which I will talk about later. When I picked up Scarlet Widow I was expecting something a lot milder; something along the lines of a mild historical mystery. I probably should have done more research, especially on the author before I read this. This is an author who has a history of writing horror and that became obvious as I read this book. There were some very gruesome murders. This is definitely not for the squeamish.
The things I liked about the book were: it kept me glued to it from the first page; the protagonist was a strong, intelligent person; and it kept me guessing throughout most of it.
There was something about the writing style that kept me turning the pages. I found Beatrice to be very likable and intelligent, and her interest in her father's profession was one part of the book I really enjoyed. For a girl back in the 1700s, Bea was an independent thinker. I liked reading about Bea's past with her parents in London, and I found the part with her relatives interesting too, although they were not ideal. That part with her crazy uncle was shocking and weird and personally I think it could have been left out of the book completely as it didn't really seem to fit.
After Bea immigrated to America, the mystery behind what was happening to the townspeople kept me guessing for a long time. Not the part Jonathan Shooks played, that was obvious, but who or what was behind the whole thing. Was Bea right about it being a person behind it all, or were the townspeople right that it was a demon or Satan himself? Logic says that Bea is right, but I've read enough supernatural type books to know that it isn't always the logical answer. And if it is just a person then who? Those were the questions I kept asking myself. The mysterious person in the brown cloak was an easier mystery to figure out. I kept wondering if that person was who was behind the murders. I'm not going to say if it was or not though because of spoilers.
The things I didn't like so much were: the strict puritanical views of most of the people; the superstitious beliefs of most of the people; the lack of any real emotion or romance between Bea and Francis, whom I didn't find very likable at times; and the rape scene.
Superstitious Puritans do not always make for pleasant reading. It's hard to believe that people could be so ignorant and superstitious, but they can- The Salem Witch Trials come to mind. Also the way women were viewed really angered me. Bea was such an intelligent woman and I had a hard time not being disappointed in who she chose to marry. He was a good man, but I think she would have thrived in a less puritanical setting. I felt like her husband Francis was mostly boring, and we really aren't given any reason why she fell in love with him. Their whole courtship is skipped over. Their scenes in bed as husband and wife are just the mechanics with no romance or real emotion. I would have rather they had just been skipped over completely because they didn't add anything to the story. This might sound sexist, but I've yet to read a romance scene written by a man that I've liked.
That brings me to the rape scene. The author couldn't craft a good love scene, but he didn't have a problem writing all the awful details of a rape scene. I don't know if that was done on purpose, or just the way it ended up, but it bothered me. I've read rape scenes in books before and they fit the story and were a part of the plot. They didn't leave me as disturbed as this one did. This rape was really unnecessary and I didn't want to read all the details of it. It bothered me more than the grisly murders did. For the writer to put the main character through that after reading through over 80 percent of the book was just needless. It did nothing for the story and felt like it was just put there for shock value. I kept thinking someone would come and help her, but no one did. Where was the mysterious person in the brown cloak then? I'm sorry if anyone thinks this is a spoiler, but I think potential readers need to know this is in the book. Had I known, I probably wouldn't have read this book.

Nasza bohaterka stawia czoła temu, co niewyjaśnione, co dziwne i nienaturalne. W „Szkarłatnej wdowie” niepokojące wydarzenia niszczą spokój niewielkiej osady. Przybywa tam ktoś, kto zna wszystkie odpowiedzi, kto wmawia mieszkańcom szatańskie sztuczki i czarowne spojrzenia. W jednej chwili zaczyna się wytykanie palcami, padają oskarżenia, ludzie z przyjaznych stają się podejrzliwi. Tak i w „Sabacie czarownic”, dla niektórych zniknięcie dziewcząt z londyńskiego przytułku może oznaczać tylko jedno – oddały się w łaski samego diabła, przepadły ich ciała i dusze. Kiedy sztuczki i triki odwracają wzrok gawiedzi, tak w oparach ogólnej histerii rodzi się najgorszy wymiar zła. I Beatrice Scarlet potrafi je dostrzec.
Masterton umiejętnie balansuje tu między tym, co zwyczajne a tym, co potworne, okrutne, bezlitosne. Tak w „Szkarłatnej wdowie”, jak i w „Sabacie czarownic” znajdziemy sceny zatrważające, obrzydliwe i makabryczne. To w tym scenach thriller płynnie przenika groza, horror, to tutaj wybrzmiewa kunszt Grahama Mastertona i jego mistrzostwo operowania gatunkiem.
I nic tylko się cieszyć, że „Szkarłatna wdowa” i „Sabat czarownic” to dopiero początek opowieści o Beatrice Scarlet – autor zapowiada kolejne tomy, a biorąc pod uwagę ogrom mastertonowej wyobraźni, można oczekiwać, że najpotworniejsze wciąż jeszcze przed naszą bohaterką i nami czytelnikami. Nie mogę się doczekać!

Ugh. This was almost a DNF for me, but I have to admit, Masterton has created an interesting enough main character (an apothecaries daughter), and enough tension that you can't help but skim to the end to find out who the "devil" is. However, be warned. This is a horror author. And it shows. There is little of emotion in the book, few between characters, and lots of horrific murders in gory detail. Perhaps most disturbing is a graphic rape scene near the end. It made little sense to me. Especially since the love scenes between husband and wife were mediocre at best. Why make the rape scene the most graphic? What does this say about the author and what he thinks women want to read? So, I don't recommend this. Only read if you like horror and gore and can handle that kind of treatment of women. Glad this was a library book.

March 30, 2018Ένα ακόμα απολαυστικό βιβλίο του Μάστερτον… άλλα όχι για όλους τους παλιούς φαν του!
Ο σπουδαίος αυτός συγγραφέας θεωρείται κατά πολλούς ως ένας από τους κορυφαίους πρεσβευτές του τρόμου παγκοσμίως. Το πιστεύω ακράδαντα κι εγώ. Ωστόσο, θα πρέπει να γίνει σαφές πως την τελευταία δεκαετία έχει φύγει για τα καλά από το συγκεκριμένο είδος, πρώτα με τις αστυνομικές (κυρίως) ιστορίες με πρωταγωνίστρια την Katie Maguire και τώρα με εκείνες της Beatrice Scarlet.
Η νέα του ηρωίδα ζει περίπου το 1750 και τα όσα έχουν να κάνουν με το πρώτο βιβλίο που πρωταγωνιστεί αφορούν κυρίως “ζητήματα” της εποχής της. Όπως λέει και το οπισθόφυλλο, η θρησκοληψία και η δεισιδαιμονία είναι ακόμα έντονες και ο κόσμος ρίχνει τα πάντα πολύ εύκολα στις μάγισσες και στον Διάβολο.
Προσωπικά απόλαυσα πάρα πολύ το βιβλίο, καθώς μου αρέσουν γενικότερα οι ιστορίες εκείνες της εποχής, ενώ εξίσου πολύ –και σταθερά– μου αρέσει και η γραφή του Μάστερτον. Η τεράστια προϋπηρεσία του στον τρόμο εξάλλου, τον έχει κάνει να εμπλουτίζει με δαύτον ακόμα και τα βιβλία από τις δύο καινούργιες σειρές και να μη “χαρίζεται” ούτε στο ελάχιστο εκεί όπου υπάρχουν βίαιες σκηνές.
Ωστόσο… προσοχή και πάλι! Επαναλαμβάνω: αν είστε οπαδοί του Άρχοντα του Ψεύδους και του Καθρέφτη και αγοράσετε αυτό το βιβλίο με σκοπό να βρείτε κάτι παρόμοιο, το πιθανότερο είναι να αστράψει και να βροντήσει ένα δυάρι (βαριά τριάρι) εδώ στο goodreads. Πρέπει λοιπόν να γνωρίζετε λοιπόν εξαρχής ότι αυτό είναι κάτι διαφορετικό.

Βρισκόμαστε στο 18ο αιώνα όπου το κυνήγι των μαγισσών δεν έχει παρέλθει εντελώς. Παράξενες δεισιδαιμονίες κυριαρχούν σε μια μικρή πόλη του Λονδίνου και οι κάτοικοι πείθονται ότι είναι έργο του σατανα! Καταδιώκουν μια συγκεκριμένη χηρα για όλα τα δεινά που επικρατούν στην περιοχή τους. Μια παράξενη χηρα που μιλάει σε ένα πουλί και σε μια κατσίκα... άραγε ευθύνεται αυτή για όλες τις συμφορές που επικρατούν; Ο ένας θάνατος διαδέχεται τον άλλον, ξεκινώντας από τα ζώα και φτάνοντας στους ανθρώπους.Αραγε είναι ο διαβολος; κάποιος που τον έχει κυριεύσει το κακό ; ή κάποιος που θέλει να επωφεληθεί από όλα αυτά ;
Με μάγεψε η πένα του Graham Masterton για μια ακόμη φορά! Ταξίδεψα στο 18 αιώνα, ένιωσα όλες τις αμφιβολίες και το φόβο που ένιωθαν οι άνθρωποι... την αμφιταλάντευση των γεγονότων με τις ψευδαισθήσεις... την αλήθεια με το ψέμα...την αγωνία των ανθρώπων να προστατεύσουν την οικογένεια τους από κάθε υπαρκτό ή μη κίνδυνο! Εσείς άραγε μέχρι που θα φτάνετε για να προστατεύσετε την οικογένεια σας ; Θα πουλούσαμε την ψυχή σας στο διαβολο;
Ένα βιβλίο που το λάτρεψα πραγματικά,με ταξίδεψε μέσα από όμορφες εικόνες,μου πρόσφερε την αγωνία,τον πόνο, την αγάπη για την οικογένεια.Την λεπτή γραμμή που χωρίζει το θάρρος από την φόβο και την υποταγή.Τον Θεό από τον διαβολο. Την δεισιδαιμονία από την αλήθεια! Τι επικρατεί τελικά ; Ποιος θα νικήσει ;

Σύνοψη του βιβλίου "Πορφυρή χήρα"
Είπαν ότι οι δολοφονίες ήταν έργο του Σατανά, όμως η Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ, η κόρη του φαρμακοποιού, εντοπίζει τα ίχνη ανθρώπων. Είπαν ότι ο θεός τούς τιμωρεί, όμως εκείνη συγκρατεί τους συμπολίτες της στη μικρή αγροτική κοινότητα για να μην ολισθαίνουν προς την υστερία. Η Μπεατρίς ζει σε μια εποχή –18ος αιώνας– όπου βασιλεύουν η θρησκοληψία και η δεισιδαιμονία, όπου ο απόηχος από τις μάγισσες του Σάλεμ δεν έχει σβήσει ακόμη. Όμως η ίδια είναι δυναμική και ανεξάρτητη, θαρραλέα και χαρισματική και δεν θα διστάσει να έρθει αντιμέτωπη με τον πραγματικό διάβολο…
Η Πορφυρή Χήρα είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο της νέας σειράς του Graham Masterton, με πρωταγωνίστρια την Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ, μια γυναίκα με οξυδέρκεια και βαθιά γνώση των βοτάνων και των ιδιοτήτων τους. Θα μπορέσει άραγε να δώσει εξήγηση σε όλα τα δεινά που πλήττουν το μικρό χωριό; Πώς θα κατορθώσει να πείσει τη μικρή θεοφοβούμενη κοινωνία πως ένας άνθρωπος μπορεί να είναι πιο κακός κι από τον ίδιο τον Σατανά;
Ακολουθήστε την Μπεατρίς σε αυτή την περιπέτεια που υπόσχεται να σας ταξιδέψει πίσω στον χρόνο και να σας δώσει έναν λόγο να αναλογιστείτε τη δύναμη που έχει η μητέρα φύση σε συνδυασμό με την ανθρώπινη εφευρετικότητα. Μια δύναμη που χειραγωγεί τον νου και φυτεύει τον φόβο στα βάθη της ψυχής.

Σύνοψη του βιβλίου "Πορφυρή χήρα"
Είπαν ότι οι δολοφονίες ήταν έργο του Σατανά, όμως η Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ, η κόρη του φαρμακοποιού, εντοπίζει τα ίχνη ανθρώπων. Είπαν ότι ο θεός τούς τιμωρεί, όμως εκείνη συγκρατεί τους συμπολίτες της στη μικρή αγροτική κοινότητα για να μην ολισθαίνουν προς την υστερία. Η Μπεατρίς ζει σε μια εποχή –18ος αιώνας– όπου βασιλεύουν η θρησκοληψία και η δεισιδαιμονία, όπου ο απόηχος από τις μάγισσες του Σάλεμ δεν έχει σβήσει ακόμη. Όμως η ίδια είναι δυναμική και ανεξάρτητη, θαρραλέα και χαρισματική και δεν θα διστάσει να έρθει αντιμέτωπη με τον πραγματικό διάβολο…
Η Πορφυρή Χήρα είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο της νέας σειράς του Graham Masterton, με πρωταγωνίστρια την Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ, μια γυναίκα με οξυδέρκεια και βαθιά γνώση των βοτάνων και των ιδιοτήτων τους. Θα μπορέσει άραγε να δώσει εξήγηση σε όλα τα δεινά που πλήττουν το μικρό χωριό; Πώς θα κατορθώσει να πείσει τη μικρή θεοφοβούμενη κοινωνία πως ένας άνθρωπος μπορεί να είναι πιο κακός κι από τον ίδιο τον Σατανά;
Ακολουθήστε την Μπεατρίς σε αυτή την περιπέτεια που υπόσχεται να σας ταξιδέψει πίσω στον χρόνο και να σας δώσει έναν λόγο να αναλογιστείτε τη δύναμη που έχει η μητέρα φύση σε συνδυασμό με την ανθρώπινη εφευρετικότητα. Μια δύναμη που χειραγωγεί τον νου και φυτεύει τον φόβο στα βάθη της ψυχής.

Ο Graham Masterton είναι ένας από τους λίγους πραγματικούς μετρ του μυθιστορήματος τρόμου.

Η πρώτη επαφή με τον μετρ του τρόμου Masterton ήρθε με ένα βιβλίο που δεν είναι ενδεικτικό ενδεχομένως των ιστοριών του, βάσει όσων έχω διαβάσει σε ομάδες, απόψεις και περιλήψεις των βιβλίων του!
Το περιεχόμενο κινείται μεταξύ της κυριαρχικής αντίθεσης πνεύματος, αμφισβήτησης και εξορθολογιστικής σκέψης από τη μια και θρησκοληψίας, δεισιδαιμονίας και άκριτης ερμηνείας γεγονότων που εκ πρώτης όψεως φαντάζουν ανεξήγητα από την άλλη. Κεντρικό πρόσωπο του βιβλίου η Μπεατρίς την οποία γνωρίζουμε σε μικρή ηλικία να μαθητεύει κοντά στον ριζοτόμο πατέρα της. Εκείνο που πάντα θα τη συντροφεύει στις δύσκολες και σκοτεινές στιγμές που θα ακολουθήσουν είναι η συμβουλή του πατέρα της να εμπιστεύεται τις αισθήσεις της, να αμφισβητεί το ανεξήγητο και όταν δεν μπορεί να κατανοήσει κάτι να μην το συνδέει με μαγεία και λοιπές σκοτεινές δυνάμεις.. η εξήγηση ίσως να είναι πολύ πιο βαρετή..
Η ιδέα αυτή διατρέχει όλη την ιστορία και κυρίως από τη στιγμή που ο Masterton αρχίζει να διηγείται τα όσα παράξενα συμβαίνουν στο Σάτον, όπου κατοικούν η Μπεατρίς και ο πάστορας σύζυγός της Φράνσις. Οφείλω να παραδεχτώ πως κάποιες στιγμές με ξένισε αυτή η έντονη αντίθεση της προσωπικότητας και του τρόπου σκέψης και στάσης απέναντι στα γεγονότα των δυο τους, με τον Φράνσις να παρουσιάζεται κάπως "κουτός", αδαής και αφελής στα μάτια του αναγνώστη. Από την άλλη ίσως αυτό να είναι και το χρώμα της θρησκοληψίας. Δυναμική υπέρ του δέοντος για την εποχή και την πατριαρχική δομή της κοινωνίας όπου ζει η Μπεατρίς αναλαμβάνει από την αρχή ενεργό ρόλο στην υπόθεση. Όσο και να προσπαθεί να σταθεί στο πλευρό του Φράνσις και να μην τον επισκιάσει, οι ενέργειές της ξεπερνούν την όποια βούλησή της. Το ανήσυχο πνεύμα της και οι γνώσεις της δεν την αφήνουν να δεχτεί μοιρολατρικά τα γεγονότα και αποφασίζει να ξεδιαλύνει όσα φαντάζουν άλυτα και να αποδείξει την ανθρώπινη συμβολή στα τεκταινόμενα.
Ο Σουκς που έρχεται να ταράξει τα νερά στην ήσυχη κοινωνία του Σάτον, είναι φανερό από την αρχή πως εμπλέκεται στην υπόθεση και έχει ενεργό ρόλο σ’ αυτήν.. το μόνο που μένει να ανακαλύψουμε είναι το κίνητρο και το ποιος ακόμη κρύβεται πίσω από όλα αυτά.
Είναι ένα βιβλίο που διαβάζεται εύκολα, αρκετά καλά δομημένο αν και σε κάποια σημεία κάποια πράγματα τα βρήκα προβλέψιμα, ενώ κάποια άλλα μου “κλωτσούσαν”. Ενδεικτικά είναι τα όσα συμβαίνουν προς τις τελευταίες σελίδες μεταξύ της Μπεατρίς και του Σουκς και η βίαιη σκηνή βγαλμένη από θρίλερ προς το τέλος. Όπως και να 'χει όμως, αξίζει να περιμένουμε τη συνέχεια της Πορφυρής Χήρας!

First in a new series from Graham Masterton, introducing the apothecary's daughter Beatrice Scarlet
Graham Masteron was the best selling horror writer who has now turned his talent to crime writing. He is also the author of the best selling Katie Maguire series, set in Cork Ireland. The author Graham Masterton is one the most original and frightening story tellers of our time. I was fascinated by this unusual story. Scarlet Widow is set in London, 1750. Beatrice Scarlet father grounds up herbs and spices for his customers, and prepared his medicinal mixtures. Sadly Beatrice's mothers coughed with her handkerchief flooded red with blood and dies. Her father has taken to drink so bad that some times he didn't know who his daughter, Beatrice was. When her father dies Beatrice became an orphan. Beatrice marries a preacher and emigrates to America where her life begins in New Hampshire, but is this for the better or for the worst?. Next I would like read the Katie Maguire series.

Κριτική για το Smassing Culture
Για τον Graham Masterton δεν χρειάζεται να ειπωθούν πολλά. Είναι ένας από τους μάστορες της λογοτεχνίας τρόμου με βιβλία κειμήλια για τον χώρο όπως το Μανιτού και Ο Άρχοντας του Ψεύδους. Τα τελευταία χρόνια παρόλ’ αυτά, έχει αλλάξει ρότα βρισκόμενος πιο κοντά στο αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα, κυρίως με τη σειρά της ηρωίδας Κέιτ Μαγκουάιρ, η οποία αριθμεί εννέα βιβλία (στα ελληνικά Τρομερή Ομορφιά και Πληγωμένοι Άγγελοι από εκδόσεις Οξύ το 2011 και το 2017 αντίστοιχα). Το 2015 ο Graham Masterton σύστησε στο κοινό μία ακόμα σειρά μυστηρίου, με πρωταγωνίστρια την Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ αυτή τη φορά, η οποία μέχρι στιγμής αριθμεί δύο βιβλία, και παρουσιάζεται για πρώτη φορά στα ελληνικά από τις εκδόσεις Οξύ με το πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς Πορφυρή Χήρα.
Τι, ή μάλλον ποια, είναι όμως η Πορφυρή Χήρα; Η Μπεατρίς λοιπόν, κόρη φαρμακοποιού στο Λονδίνο του 18ου -κατά προσέγγιση- αιώνα, ζει στο Λονδίνο με τους γονείς της μέχρις ότου ο θάνατος και των δύο την στέλνει στο βόρειο Μάντσεστερ να ζήσει με τη θεία της. Εκεί μεγαλώνοντας θα γνωρίσει τον μετέπειτα σύζυγό της Φράνσις Σκάρλετ, με τον οποίο θα μετακομίσουν στη Νέα Αγγλία και συγκεκριμένα σε μία μικρή κοινότητα, το Σάτον, όπου ο Φράνσις θα είναι ο πάστορας. Την μικρή αυτή και ήσυχη, κατά τα φαινόμενα, κοινότητα έρχονται να διαταράξουν κάποια συμβάντα όπως οι δηλητηριασμοί ζώων, ασθένειες παιδιών αλλά και βίαιοι θάνατοι. Και καθώς όλοι πιστεύουν πως τα συμβάντα αυτά είναι έργο του Σατάνα, εμφανίζεται ένας μυστηριώδης άντρας, ο Τζόναθαν Σουκς να περιπλέξει ακόμα παραπάνω την κατάσταση.
Σε αυτό το σημείο ξεχωρίζει η Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ, κυρίως απέναντι στον πάστορα σύζυγό της, ο οποίος φαίνεται να βολεύεται στην αφελή εξήγηση πως για όλα φταίει ο Σατανάς και οι όποιοι δαίμονές του, κάτι το οποίο όμως εξηγείται από την θρησκοληψία της εποχής. Από την άλλη η Μπεατρίς έχοντας μεγαλώσει με πατέρα φαρμακοποιό, έχει μάθει να πιστεύει στην φυσική εξήγηση πολλών περιστατικών, και αυτό τη φέρνει πολλές φορές σε μία εσωτερική σύγκρουση που από την μία παλεύει η πίστη της στο Θεό (κατά συνέπεια και στην ύπαρξη του Σατανά) και από την άλλη η ορθολογική σκέψη της. Ο δυναμικός της χαρακτήρας όμως, αν και ίσως λίγο υπερβολικός για την περίοδο που τοποθετείται η ιστορία, δεν την αφήνει να δεχτεί αδρανώς τα τεκταινόμενα και αποφασίζει να τα ξεδιαλύνει, φέρνοντας στο φως την ανθρώπινη συμβολή στα συμβάντα.
Ο Graham Masterton, αποδεικνύει ακόμα μια φορά πως κατέχει μια εξαιρετική πένα και υφαίνει μια ιστορία πολύ καλά δομημένη, που είναι δύσκολο να παρατήσει ο αναγνώστης. Η μάχη μεταξύ ορθολογισμού και θρησκοληψίας καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ιστορίας, σε συνδυασμό με τις βίαιες και άβολες σκηνές, που θα ήταν αδύνατο να λείπουν από βιβλίο του Masterton, προσφέρουν μια γοητευτική και σκοτεινή ιστορία μυστηρίου. Και αυτό εν κατακλείδι είναι η Πορφυρή Χήρα.
Αν κάποιος αναζητήσει στο εν λόγω βιβλίο, τα χαρακτηριστικά που ��καναν γνωστό τον Masterton ως έναν από τους μαιτρ της λογοτεχνίας τρόμου, μάλλον θα απογοητευτεί. Αν όμως αναζητήσει μια καλογραμμένη και καλοδουλεμένη ιστορία μυστήριου, θα το ευχαριστηθεί υπέρ του δέοντος.

Ίσως θεωρηθεί ότι αυτό το βιβλίο ξεφεύγει από το πρότυπο του τρόμου του Μαστερτον. Ο συγγραφέας αποδίδει με μοναδική μαεστρία το ζοφερό κλίμα, μας αφήνει να μυρίσουμε τον φόβο και αναρωτιόμαστε εάν τελικά επικρατεί η λογική ή κάτι πραγματικά κακό και απόκοσμο έχει εισβάλει στον κόσμο της ιστορίας. Υπέροχες σκιαγραφησεις χαρακτήρων, δείχνουν τις απόψεις μιας εποχής όπου για όλα τα δεινά μπόρει να ευθυνόταν ένας δαίμονας. Το απόλαυσα πραγματικά!

The disgusting and needless rape scene was NOT needed.
Everything was ruined...EVERYTHING...when the author decided that he had to insert a foul rape scene in this story near the end. When an author needs to insert rape scenes to a mystery/horror story, he is not trusting that what he writes about will hold its own.
As it is, when the heroine is being raped and screaming, where was the brown-cloaked man, who always seemed to be at the end of her road. No....he doesn't seem to be around to save her then, when she truly needed him. I was HOPING someone would come and help the poor woman. The author had decided to trash the heroine, instead. And so her "savior" when he finally did come was nothing but a token written in. And the author made her seem like her life was peachy clean after that horrible time.
I will NEVER read another story by this author. Period.

I have only recently started to listen to audio books and boy was I in for a treat with this book.
Absolutely loved the story of which their are many reviews so I won't spoil the book for others by adding more information.
I have noticed with the audio books that a brilliant story can be absolutely ruined by the person who is narrating the book.
The voice is everything and this book had it all a totally brilliant story and absolutely wonderful narration by Emma Gregory.
Totally enjoyed this book and it helped pass the hours on a long journey.
Mind you i couldn't sleep because I was still listening when I was snuggled up in bed as I had to know who was the villain in the tale.
Highly recommended.

Trigger warnings: murder, graphic rape, graphic death, graphic descriptions of dead bodies, death of a parent, death of a child, fire, animal death, mentions of domestic violence, poisoning, child abduction, home invasion.
Oh boy. This was SUCH a mixed bag for me. I had a vague sense that I knew the name Graham Masterson before I started reading this, but it wasn't until I reached the end of the book that I realised he wrote THE most fucked up and gross book I have ever read in my life (White Bones). So, uh, that was a fun realisation.
I was a little surprised when this started out set in the UK. The first 20-25% of the book covers Beatrice's youth, particularly after the death of her parents. And, like, I understand that it's relevant to the story later on. But when I was sold on reading this because it's a murder mystery set in 1700s New Hampshire and then instead you present me with the story of a teenage girl struggling to adjust to life with her cousin after her parents die? Meh.
Anyway, once the murder mystery side of things got started? I really enjoyed this. Beatrice was a fantastic protagonist and I loved seeing her scientific approach to investigating when everyone around her is so tied up in a faith based approach to what's happening.
But.
I maintain that it was WILDLY unnecessary to have It added absolutely nothing to the story and it honestly put me off reading anything by Masterson ever again after the experience I had with this and with White Bones.
So the mystery side of it? I enjoyed it. There were twists and turns and Beatrice's unique skills definitely came in handy. But then the way the last 20% played out? No. Absolutely not. Stop it.

Πορφυρή Χήρα- Η βαριά ατμόσφαιρα του μυστηρίου τρόμου
Για τον Graham Masterton δεν χρειάζεται να ειπωθούν πολλά. Είναι ένας από τους μάστορες της λογοτεχνίας τρόμου με βιβλία κειμήλια για τον χώρο όπως το Μανιτού και Ο Άρχοντας του Ψεύδους. Τα τελευταία χρόνια παρόλ’ αυτά, έχει αλλάξει ρότα βρισκόμενος πιο κοντά στο αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα, κυρίως με τη σειρά της ηρωίδας Κέιτ Μαγκουάιρ, η οποία αριθμεί εννέα βιβλία (στα ελληνικά Τρομερή Ομορφιά και Πληγωμένοι Άγγελοι από εκδόσεις Οξύ το 2011 και το 2017 αντίστοιχα). Το 2015 ο Graham Masterton σύστησε στο κοινό μία ακόμα σειρά μυστηρίου, με πρωταγωνίστρια την Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ αυτή τη φορά, η οποία μέχρι στιγμής αριθμεί δύο βιβλία, και παρουσιάζεται για πρώτη φορά στα ελληνικά από τις εκδόσεις Οξύ με το πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς Πορφυρή Χήρα.
Τι, ή μάλλον ποια, είναι όμως η Πορφυρή Χήρα; Η Μπεατρίς λοιπόν, κόρη φαρμακοποιού στο Λονδίνο του 18ου -κατά προσέγγιση- αιώνα, ζει στο Λονδίνο με τους γονείς της μέχρις ότου ο θάνατος και των δύο την στέλνει στο βόρειο Μάντσεστερ να ζήσει με τη θεία της. Εκεί μεγαλώνοντας θα γνωρίσει τον μετέπειτα σύζυγό της Φράνσις Σκάρλετ, με τον οποίο θα μετακομίσουν στη Νέα Αγγλία και συγκεκριμένα σε μία μικρή κοινότητα, το Σάτον, όπου ο Φράνσις θα είναι ο πάστορας. Την μικρή αυτή και ήσυχη, κατά τα φαινόμενα, κοινότητα έρχονται να διαταράξουν κάποια συμβάντα όπως οι δηλητηριασμοί ζώων, ασθένειες παιδιών αλλά και βίαιοι θάνατοι. Και καθώς όλοι πιστεύουν πως τα συμβάντα αυτά είναι έργο του Σατάνα, εμφανίζεται ένας μυστηριώδης άντρας, ο Τζόναθαν Σουκς να περιπλέξει ακόμα παραπάνω την κατάσταση.
Σε αυτό το σημείο ξεχωρίζει η Μπεατρίς Σκάρλετ, κυρίως απέναντι στον πάστορα σύζυγό της, ο οποίος φαίνεται να βολεύεται στην αφελή εξήγηση πως για όλα φταίει ο Σατανάς και οι όποιοι δαίμονές του, κάτι το οποίο όμως εξηγείται από την θρησκοληψία της εποχής. Από την άλλη η Μπεατρίς έχοντας μεγαλώσει με πατέρα φαρμακοποιό, έχει μάθει να πιστεύει στην φυσική εξήγηση πολλών περιστατικών, και αυτό τη φέρνει πολλές φορές σε μία εσωτερική σύγκρουση που από την μία παλεύει η πίστη της στο Θεό (κατά συνέπεια και στην ύπαρξη του Σατανά) και από την άλλη η ορθολογική σκέψη της. Ο δυναμικός της χαρακτήρας όμως, αν και ίσως λίγο υπερβολικός για την περίοδο που τοποθετείται η ιστορία, δεν την αφήνει να δεχτεί αδρανώς τα τεκταινόμενα και αποφασίζει να τα ξεδιαλύνει, φέρνοντας στο φως την ανθρώπινη συμβολή στα συμβάντα.
Ο Graham Masterton, αποδεικνύει ακόμα μια φορά πως κατέχει μια εξαιρετική πένα και υφαίνει μια ιστορία πολύ καλά δομημένη, που είναι δύσκολο να παρατήσε�� ο αναγνώστης. Η μάχη μεταξύ ορθολογισμού και θρησκοληψίας καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ιστορίας, σε συνδυασμό με τις βίαιες και άβολες σκηνές, που θα ήταν αδύνατο να λείπουν από βιβλίο του Masterton, προσφέρουν μια γοητευτική και σκοτεινή ιστορία μυστηρίου. Και αυτό εν κατακλείδι είναι η Πορφυρή Χήρα.
Αν κάποιος αναζητήσει στο εν λόγω βιβλίο, τα χαρακτηριστικά που έκαναν γνωστό τον Masterton ως έναν από τους μαιτρ της λογοτεχνίας τρόμου, μάλλον θα απογοητευτεί. Αν όμως αναζητήσει μια καλογραμμένη και καλοδουλεμένη ιστορία μυστήριου, θα το ευχαριστηθεί υπέρ του δέοντος.

In the 1750s, Beatrice Scarlett, the daughter of a London apothecary, emigrates to the US with her pastor husband. After a number of years in their quiet community, odd, satanic things begin to happen from pigs dropping dead, fish floating to the top of ponds and children getting sick. Beatrice feels like there is a human behind the events rather than a malevolent spirit and begins to investigate.
This book flowed very well and was easy to read (in parts) and get through quickly - at the start, I did find it odd to get 10 chapters of backstory about Beatrice which felt unnecessary and honestly by the end still felt unnecessary as I don't think the story needed that part and another character would have stood in just fine. There were moments of horror in this in some of the descriptions that would take you aback - Beatrice's recollection of a dead woman who had been raped, a child burning alive etc.
I do feel the rape scene in this book was gratuitous and there for shock value. It added nothing to the story and I really didn't like that the author decided to really go for it in detail rather than a more fade to black scene or the character blanking what was happening out of her head. I find it interesting, morose but not surprising where books I've read that have had shock value scenes like this done to the main character and in detail are always written by men.
I also thought the ending was very weak considering the calamity of the crimes and violence. We don't find out what happened to Samuel and I think the introduction of a past character could have been replaced by someone like Mary helping instead.

This book has given me problems.
I found the first 15% of this read a little bit amateurish but pushed on because I was caught up in the premise. The writing was quite simplistic and I nearly dnf it but I had read the blurb for the second book (The Coven) and really wanted to read that one so continued. Then a funny thing happened - the writing got a lot better and I couldn't put it down! I have a load of issues with this book (a rather unnecessary sex scene being one) but I HAD to finish it and I ended up really enjoying it. The story is quite predictable and some of the characters are questionable (evil mute sidekick, really) but I finished it, enjoyed it and will read the second book in this series.

„Szkarłatna wdowa” to moje trzecie spotkanie z Grahamem Mastertonem. Pierwsze było raczej średnie, „Dom stu szeptów” to była druga szansa ode mnie dla tego autora i cóż to była petarda… I nie ukrywam miałam teraz OGROMNE oczekiwania. I uwaga! Nie zawiodłam się.
„Szkarłatna wdowa” ma genialny klimat. XVIII-wieczne realia, szatańskie siły i zagadka kryminalna. Historia zaczyna się w Londynie. Poznajemy tam Beatrice, której ojciec przekazuje alchemiczną wiedzę. Gdy jej rodzice opuszczają ten świat, kobieta poznaje Francisa. Świeżo upieczeni małżonkowie przenoszą się do Ameryki z czasów gdzie polowania na czarownice były na porządku dziennym. Tam mężczyzna zostaje pastorem, a w okolicy zaczynają dziać się naprawdę niepokojące wydarzenia przerywając sielankę nowego początku. Umierają zwierzęta, giną ludzie (w okropnych okolicznościach), wybuchają pożary… Dzieje się dużo, bardzo dużo!
To takie połączenie trochę kryminału, lekko krwawego horroru, sensacji z elementami historycznymi i thrillera. Totalny miks i misz masz, ale wypadło w całości naprawdę obiecująco. A to dopiero pierwszy tom, drugi wciąż przed nami. 🤩
Świetnie się ją czytało, trzyma w napięciu i mocno wciąga. Gdy tylko nie mogłam czytać odpalałam audiobooka i w końcu też przy wersji audio zostałam do końca. Muszę to napisać bo lektor odwalił kawał świetnej roboty. Chyba lepiej nagranej książki jeszcze nie słuchałam, a dzięki temu jeszcze bardziej mi się podobała!
Może odrobinkę rozminęłam się z oczekiwaniami co do zakończenia. Spodziewałam się troszkę czegoś innego, ale chyba tak po prostu mam z tym autorem, bo to nie jest pierwszy raz. Myślałam, że zakończenie będzie troszkę lepsze, ale… I tak było DOBRE!
Bardzo mocno czekam na kolejny tom i oczywiście polecam.
„Szkarłatna wdowa” ma genialny klimat. XVIII-wieczne realia, szatańskie siły i zagadka kryminalna. Historia zaczyna się w Londynie. Poznajemy tam Beatrice, której ojciec przekazuje alchemiczną wiedzę. Gdy jej rodzice opuszczają ten świat, kobieta poznaje Francisa. Świeżo upieczeni małżonkowie przenoszą się do Ameryki z czasów gdzie polowania na czarownice były na porządku dziennym. Tam mężczyzna zostaje pastorem, a w okolicy zaczynają dziać się naprawdę niepokojące wydarzenia przerywając sielankę nowego początku. Umierają zwierzęta, giną ludzie (w okropnych okolicznościach), wybuchają pożary… Dzieje się dużo, bardzo dużo!
To takie połączenie trochę kryminału, lekko krwawego horroru, sensacji z elementami historycznymi i thrillera. Totalny miks i misz masz, ale wypadło w całości naprawdę obiecująco. A to dopiero pierwszy tom, drugi wciąż przed nami. 🤩

4.5/5⭐️ I’m so glad I randomly found this recommendation! The perfect October read. I highly recommend this if you love historical fiction & want one that is fitting for spooky season, or if you read Slewfoot & loved it! It’s not exactly the same as Slewfoot, but it did remind of it. If you’re not into horror(I’m not either, hardly) don’t let that bother you. This isn’t heavy on the horror or overly gory. It reads just like historical suspense/mystery. This is my first time hearing of this author, but I will read more of his work, especially book two in this series!

Scarlet Widow is book one of a brand new series by Graham Masterton, the author of the very entertaining and popular series featuring DS Katie Maguire. Beatrice Scarlet is a far different character than Katie Maguire and the series is a grand departure from what is offered in the Katie Maguire series. But through it all is the cadence and steady pace of a superb writer enjoying his craft. Widow Scarlet is sure to garner its own following as this well written historical thriller carves out its own niche in the growing legion of Masterton fans.
Beatrice is the apothecary's daughter in 1750's London. But the medicines and potions she can mix with the knowledge her father imparts to her from oils and herbs cannot save her mother or her father from a violent death. Orphaned at an early age she is sent to live with her only family until she is of age to marry. Falling for the young master Scarlet she leaves London with her new husband to minister in the new world of America.
Satan has come to the small farming community where Beatrice and her husband now live in New Hampshire. It is 1756 and the frenzied events that haunt the small Massachusetts town of Salem have plagued the minds of the quaint religious community. When six pigs are found slaughtered, worse than the condition of their bodies is what is found embedded in their mouths. Glass, mirrors or even better than known to this community as the devil's communion. Further animals begin to die but this does not seem enough for Satan or the Witch the townspeople believe have been sent to their small village, soon people begin to die. Slaves and husbands and children in the most horrific ways. Until Beatrice herself is made to pay the dearest price.
While the village is willing to accept the works as the Devil himself come to the Americas, Beatrice sees the hand of man in all of evil. An observation that may make her the next victim of the dark power that has come to her home.
Filled with old world superstition and religion and the fears of the new world, Scarlet Widow is a crime mystery set in early America with a young widow women battling the prejudice of the religion and the men around her. Masterton is one of the better crime writers going right now. He made he name in violent horror and then followed it up with the powerfully perverse and visceral Katie Maguire series. With the historically beautiful and haunting Scarlet Widow, Masterton begins a new series set in the early years of the Americas when the fears and superstitions of the rural people still rule.
For readers who enjoy the tales of early America and more so the persecution of women by the church and men of this time, i.e., widows and witches and herbalists; you will find your heroine in Beatrice Scarlet. Raised by her parents to think and not to simply accept the status quo with its limitations, Beatrice works within the imposed boundaries that are daily realities of her life to solve the mystery and dangers that threaten her home. Her knowledge of the apothecary and as wife of the village Minister gives her a place of respect among the women, but she is still considered to be a second class citizen and inferior to the men in the village. Beatrice will face her greatest challenge and though she prevails it is at great cost.
Masterton writes terrific crime/mystery novels, whether set in the colonies in the 1700s or in modern day Ireland, with strong and yet vulnerable women. But one theme that has prevailed so far in all of his novels is rape. Whether it be the main female character or a secondary character, there is always a rape. It is graphic and violent and not always, it seems, necessary to the tale. Perhaps it is what the author thinks is needed? To create a strong woman and yet remind her that a man can still break her down in this most evil of manners. I'm not sure and perhaps I've only had a small sample size of Masterton's writing to judge this by but it has been a recurrent theme in all the books I have read by Masterton.
