It’s very hard to rate a book that covers how one person relates to and feels about her goddess. Who am I to judge? It’s just that I found the writing style to be a tad dramatic and I had to dig to find real substance around Hekate that didn’t feel anecdotal. A good read for me during Samhain to honour Hekate and realise how deep she can be brought into my life.
About 63% of this book is a devotional to the goddess Hekate, and the popular opinion is that this exempts the writing from, well, being coherent, I guess? I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but I did not like this book, I didn't benefit from it as I thought I would, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
This is full of convoluted, flowery writing that rambles on and on without any information or, seemingly, any point except to seem arcane. There are a lot of things capitalized as if they are key points or important but then never explained. This book gets harder to read the deeper I got because it is was giving me very little in actual substance. The writing went around in circles, repeating itself, repeating the titles, repeating the name, and yet, making no sense at all.
If you are looking to learn about the goddess Hekate, find another book, what you seek will not be here. I mostly ended up using the last two pages, the recommended reading, the most, to build up a small library of books on my kindle to read that would hopefully give me actual information and substance and less roundabouts.
This has been one of the best reads I have had of a spiritual book. It is a short read, and I made myself read it slowly as it is a devotional, and this is a devotional like no other I have read. It pulls you into the feeling of the Goddess, it gave me goosebumps at times. I recommend this to anyone following a Goddess path, even if you don't follow Her.
This is a tricky book. There were plenty of things here that didn't quite strike me as true, as a lot of this is based on the author's personal ideas about Hecate, which says at least as much about her as it does about the deity, herself. I might have rated this lower if the bulk of the book hadn't driven me to develop my own personal conception of Hecate, which wasn't quite the same as the one presented here, but wasn't entirely different, either. The writing might have been toned down a bit, since not everything is insane or erotic (or both at the same time), but despite that, this was a worthwhile read.
I'll be honest, it wasn't what I was looking for, but it's inspired me to try some things and see where they take me. Sometimes we get lucky and find out that what we weren't looking for is actually something we can benefit from. Moss's perceptions of Hekate are very different from my own, but her heart is obviously in her service and dedication to goddess and craft. Several of the hymns and invocations are beautiful and moving; I hope the author doesn't mind if I speak them at my own altar. I envy the author her convictions and her devotion. May we all be half so blessed in our relationships with the gods as she.
Great book, great devotional, good info. this is 1 of those books you just sit back & read slowly. Enjoy it & ponder over it. It was well thought out & well written.
First of all this is a full-on personal gnosis book so don't go into it hoping for many historical facts and such. It's a book for those who want insight on how a devotee and priestess of Hekate works. And it's so good. I loved it. You can FEEL the love and devotion that the author has for Hekate and that is so so beautiful, I loved it. In the beginning and end of each section there's always a prayer or some personal text that makes it even more beautiful and the author explains how her practice works, how she sees and works and connects with the Goddess. It's a really good book to get a nice view of someone's practice and it's wonderful to draw inspiration from. Many times this book inspired me to just stop and meditate or take time to acknowledge Hekate's presence in my life and that's a beautiful thing for a book to do! I recommend this if you're a devotee or interested in the Goddess Hekate since I think it can help greatly for individual practice and inspiration. It's truly a gift to Hekate from the author!
This book was not quite what I was hoping for. It was very interesting to get another person's view and experience of Hecate but I was hoping for a little more guidance on how to interact with her myself. I do like that we're given reading suggestions and I did find this a fantastic as well as touching display of Vivienne Moss' love for Hecate. I recommend this book to anyone interested in someone else's experience living and interacting with Hecate daily.
This book was not my cup of tea. I don't like the structure and I'm not in complete agreement with the author's views.
That being said she does present Hekate in a different light and it's definitely a book I will recommend to give people a different view of Hekate. I don't feel that I have to agree with someone to see the value in what they are presenting. Ms. Moss sees Hekate in a different light than others and that is always something worth exploring.
I didn't love this one as much as I loved the Aphrodite book, but I think it's just a personal preference because I found it hard to understand the authors personal stories without the background information that came in the last few chapters. Overall good content, though, and I would love to have it as a table book for referencing during different practices (I read it on my phone through Google Play)
I gave this devotional full stars because it opens the door to who Hekate is, what she is about and how this lady experiences her presence in her own life. It is beautifully written, atmospheric and captivating. A good place to start learning about Hekate, and an enjoyable journey for the reader who is already familiar with this enchanting Goddess.
2.5 Based on this authors opinions. Not many historical facts. Take everything in this with a pinch of salt, as some of it is inaccurate. For example: says Hekate likes blood as an offering. This could be just as a personal thing, but generally, the Greek deities didn't like blood offerings, so I would avoid.
It's was okay, very lyrical and poetic. She takes you on her own personal journey with Hekate she shares her own thoughts, insights and experiences from working with the goddess. Apart from you wont get much else apart from some correspondences. There is no practical information about how to set up an altar or how to do invocations with the goddess it wasn't what I was expecting!
This book was written in the honor of Hekate. For that alone, it speaks to me. The end of the book includes different methods of practice, resources, and magic to help further our connection with Her.
I recommend this book to any Hekate devotee. I enjoyed the prayers, rituals, and recipes within this book. I loved the authors perspective. I will come back to this book as reference and to prepare the recipes within.
As the title says, this book is a devotional and in that manner, it offers personal gnosis about the writer's experience with Hekate! It's not a book about history or ways of interacting with Hekate but it offers another poetic perspective on how to perceive the goddess in one of her many forms.
Not what I expected. Pages and pages of repetition and nonsense. I misunderstood what this was about. I was looking for a history, the origins of Hekate. This book is just one long prayer to a Goddess and I'm none the wiser on how to find her myself
I thought I would learn more about Hecate but this was more of a devotional and very personal almost like reading someone's journal or grimoire I couldn't finish it sadly
Felt like I was just reading someone's journal with crappy poetry. Really did not enjoy this or get much out of it. Would be helpful for others who are new to the path.
This book is a delicious read. It takes you on a meditative journey with the author in finding Hekate in various aspects of life. It is a wonderful book.
