GARFIELD rules his kingdom with an iron paw. No one is safe from the portly prankster! So whether he's playing snap-the-towel with the constantly clueless Odie, giving Jon a "shocking" makeover, or plotting his next line of attack on the birdbath, GARFIELD always comes out on top!
James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.
Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.
Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.
Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.
This one deserves special mention because it features one of my favorite strips, where Garfield sees some interesting signs while walking down the sidewalk; I won't give the joke away here...but it's hilarious!
Garfield Throws His Weight Around is a nice collection of Garfield comic strips. There are plenty of chuckles to be had when you are reading about America's most dastardly cat. Garfield's dry sense of humor is sure to make you smile. With Jon and Odie beside him, Garfield plays the straight man to the two goofballs he lives with.
I often wonder how Odie understands what Garfield is thinking? How does a dog understand cat anyway? Hmmm . . something to think about.
I was disappointed that there weren't any long storylines in this book. A long storyline is like a breath of fresh air in a daily comic strip. I can always depend on Jim Davis creating some kind of conflict between his three main characters. And when there is conflict in Jon's house, there is usually quite a bit of fun. I love it when Odie outsmarts Garfield. That doesn't happen too often, but when it does, I always smile. You see, I'm a dog person, not a cat person.
Overall, Garfield Throws His Weight Around is a fun collection of daily comic strips starring a fat cat that always has his claws sharpened. The Garfield books are always entertaining, but not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny. Still, I always look forward to turning the page and seeing what kind of trouble he will find himself in next . . . and there is always more trouble.
Top notch Garfield fun as usual! How could anybody actually not like this snarky cat and all his lovable sidekicks?
It does make me scratch my head why Kindle has had this one, the previous book and it looks like at least the next book in this series as having to display in portrait mode. There are enough slightly longer panels to where it makes sense to continue to let the reader decide the format they want to read it in.
This book is funny. I don't remember everything that happened. When I read this book it was with a lot of other Garfield books. I love these comic type books because they are easy to read, and quite funny. I think everyone should read these books. So read them now!
This book was so funny!!! It kept me reading and laughing!!! I am a TOTAL Garfield fan though so i guess it's natural for me to have loved that book!!!
This book is great even when Jon said to Garfield that he thinks he is to fat and Garfield said(get back to me when you're absolutely certain about that).
