Jesus' compassion, miracles and teachings are seen through the eyes of Mark. The drama in this version of the Gospel peaks as Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" You don't really "read" this one, as it's a guided Bible study, with quotes from Mark and passages from mostly Lucado's other work. In fact, I've read a lot of Lucado lately that references about the same five longer Lucado writings (it's understandable in this case, however). I'm not necessarily complaining. The repetition is good for the soul, especially as it counteracts all the legalism that seems to speak so much louder than radical grace--the literature that constantly gets thrown at you that pressures you to feel guilty about all the stuff you're not doing for God and goes so far as to say you put yourself in danger of hell every time you make a mistake.

Also, I dig the cut of Lucado's jibe. I don't know how to describe it, but he has a way of writing that never varies, and each sentence seems meant to go on a placard somewhere. It's shameless and melodramatic, but it's so often very true, too, and I'm a fan. As I read through this study, I really just tried to reflect on each question rather than answer it at length. It would probably be pretty effective and helpful in a group setting. I think more Bible studies need to be directed at getting believers to realize their value and worth in God's eyes, to see how much He loves us and affirms us. We don't focus on that enough, and the omission is quite often to our detriment.

12 LESSONS WITH EACH ONE POSING VARIOUS QUESTIONS THAT LEADS YOU TO EXPLORE, BE INSPIRED, REACT, DIG DEEP FURTHER AND APPLY THE MAIN THESIS FROM EACH PASSAGE OF THE BOOK OF MARK SELECTED. VERY PRACTICAL AND WOULD BE A GREAT GUIDE IN A SMALL GROUP SETTING THOUGH I USED IT PERSONALLY AND FOUND IT EASY TO COMPLETE BUT STILL MEANINGFUL IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.

We just completed this as our third book study of the Gospels. We like Max Lucado's style and I feel I have gained a better knowledge of the scriptures through these studies.

I participated in a women's only small group during Lent and this is the book we read. I found some great insight into the Gospel of Mark, more than I ever have before. Though we didn't read or get through most of the questions, Max does a great job of leading us into more meaningful conversations. I would recommend this to another small group.
