Cutter had given up on finding a woman when Hope sauntered right into his bar. With her straight talk, toned figure, and military training, she can disarm a man in more ways than one. But the mission she's on will shake up Cutter's world.
Hope's lost her younger sister, but she hasn't lost her namesake. It's been almost two years since Faith vanished, but Hope hasn't given up the search. She'll either find her sister or some answers.
Can Cutter keep his club out of trouble and help the siren in his bar on her mission? One can only hope...
A.J. Downey is a Pacific Northwest girl living in an East Tennessee world who finds inspiration from her surroundings, through the people she meets, and likely as a byproduct of way too much caffeine. She specializes in real and relatable romance stories featuring that real-life kind of love that everyone craves.
I was a little nervous going into this book since I wasn't sure how I would like Cutter, but I had nothing to worry about. I loved his character, and I especially loved him with Hope. She was a kickass heroine that was willing to do anything to find her sister. I really liked that she was so tough and could keep up with the guys of the MC.
The story was only about a short period of time, but everything was explained and it didn't seem like anything was lost. I really liked the intensity of the characters, and the fast pace that the book went at. Bottom line, a great story about a sister willing to do anything for her family, and the badass man who claims her.
I've only read two other books by this author 'Damaged and Dangerous' and 'Masked and Miserable' but from the little bit of Cutter we got in 'Damaged' I knew I wanted more especially when I read the blurb for his book. Cutter is the president of The Kraken MC a small MC based in the town of Ft. Royal Florida. Hope is ex military highly trained and lethal and she's looking for her sister Faith who went missing two years ago in New Orleans while on vacation with her friend Tonya. Hope has spent two years searching for her sister, following every lead, a Private Investigator she hired finally found some information on Tonya which leads straight to a Cutter's door. Cutter is just fabulous, a hot intelligent biker and Hope is amazing so this was always going to be good but despite their initial attraction to each other both Cutter and Hope are careful and wary, he needs to protect his club and she just wants her sister so a game of cat and mouse ensues but chemistry like theirs can't be ignored for long. This is a great book I was hooked from the first page to the last, I loved all the characters, the story plus the additional characters in fact The Voodoo Bastards came close to steeling the show at times and while I know the next two books belong to Marlin and Nothing I wish they were Ruth and La Croix, hopefully they'll get theirs in the future. I know I mentioned above that Hope was amazing and I can't stress enough just how refreshing it is to come across a woman who can more than look after herself, she's intelligent, determined and loyal and it makes such a nice change from the ever increasing ranks of TSTL females who make stupid decision after stupid decision. I will just add that I don't give 5* easily.
I was so happy to finally get to read Cutter's story. I absolutely adored him in the other books. It was extra special because Reaver was back for this one too. I really wanted to see this couple together a bit more after what they went through, and this book gave me that. Another incredible read. I can't wait for more!!! I love this author!!!
I liked spending time with the Kraken, have liked what I saw of them with the Sacred Hearts books. Here is the thing though, I liked Hope, when she first shows up she is a strong take no non-sense women. Yet somewhere along the way she sort of lost that and became super submissive around Cutter. I didn't like that, even as I liked the 2 of them together. I loved how Hope was going to find her sister come hell or high water. Liked how Cutter and the guys decided to help. The trip to New Orleans was fun, especially with the local MC.
I really loved how everyone rallied when they found Faith, how they got her home, took care of her and gave her a chance to come back from the hell she was in.
I wasn't surprised when Hayden and Reaver showed up, nor was I surprised when Hayden enthusiastically said hello to Cutter and how it pissed Hope off. What did surprise me was that Reaver was the one to talk Hope down, by cluing her in about the past. That was the right move, odd as it seems.
I liked how this one ended, how Hope found a home base now with Cutter and the Kraken. I look forward to reading about Faith and her journey back to life.

When Hope walks into a bikers bar to trace a lead for her missing sister, she doesn't expect to get much help but she has no plans of backing down. Cutter watches the woman who has brass balls that's for sure, she stares down the other bikers and demands to talk to him. She wants information from a mistake one of his men made, but club comes first and he can't give her the information she is looking for.
Cutter decides to take a chance trusting his clubs safety with Hope, but he doesnt expect it to be a smooth ride. However, while Hope is just looking for temporary with Cutter, he is looking for long term. He is gong to use every means possible to keep Hope by his side, and finding her sister is step one.
Very different for a biker book. I liked that Hope was tough as nails and did not understand the club dynamic. Cutter tries to teach Hope along the way but she has a mind of her own. Chemistry was off the charts. Exciting beginning to new series.
Attempted reread 2/2023 I read this many years ago and apparently liked it so I thought I'd give it a reread. My tastes must have changed in that time because I'm not enjoying it this time around. Despite the h being a bada$$, the H is too much of a manwhore and has too much of the typical MC attitude that annoys me. When I got to 24% and read:
"We didn't tend to hit women. It was one thing to belt one in the mouth if she got mouthy but that was as far as that f***ing went."
I decided I wasn't going to keep reading. Changed my rating from 3 to 2 stars.
Original review:
Pretty good MC book. Hope was the perfect blend of tough and vulnerable. She and Cutter were great together. The book did seem to drag on a bit long for me and the events at the end with the out-of-town visitors were annoying. Cutter never even explained himself and they needed to have a conversation.
Wow. I absolutely loved Cutter's Hope. I'd been looking forward to reading this and I was not disappointed. Hope is not some Damsel in distress, she is a Damsel who is dangerous in her own rite and she had some brilliant scenes, not just with Cutter but with the other guys too. The sex was hotter than I've read from AJ before, the story was a little grittier and as the for the other MC members... loved them. I can't wait to read more about them.
I'm really looking forward to Marlin's Faith. 5 stars from me.
It's recommended before this book that Miss Downey's other series be read first so that certain events make sense. I'd only read the first of the other series before giving up and the book still made sense to me. If I couldn't finish her other series, I don't know why I expected a different result with another book.
Heroine: Hope used to be in the army and she now trains police officers to fight without using their guns. Her younger sister Faith has been missing for years but Hope keeps on looking for her. I was surprised by Hope, and not in a good way. Sure, I appreciated that she was represented as badass and that she could easily take down the men of the group. But other than fighting, her "badass" attitude seems to be missing. I understand that some people need to cry but all I really want is a badass woman that doesn't crumble and cry at the first sign of resistance.
Hero: Cutter is the president of Kraken Motorcycle club. When Hope comes around asking about her sister's friend that he'd had killed, he knows that she's going to be trouble. While trying to get her to leave the friend alone, he starts to realise what a great woman she is and he wants to help her find her sister. I understand that he used to love someone before Hope but it was harped on so much that it was just annoying and it became obvious that she'd show up and mess up the relationship when they became happy. It just didn't care about Cutter, he just wasn't the kind of biker character that I know and love.
Plot: I will say a positive of the book: the missing sister was the main plot while the romance was a sub-plot. Usually, the romance is the primary plot and the mystery is randomly chucked into the book but this book actually made sense. But when it came to the solution of Faith missing, it was just a bit too easy for me. She was legally missing, I can't imagine the police would let her leave so easily but then again, it's no surprise that a biker book is anti-police. Also, after the rescue, everyone was fine. There were no casualties for facing an army guarding a human trafficking ring and that just doesn't seem realistic. I wasn't invested in Cutter and Hope's relationship, it just seemed kind of meh to me. The sex was okay between the two of them, although they don't use a condom because Hope's tubes are tied... I wanted them both the get STD's just for the hell of it. You know, cause her tube's being tied stop that too and it isn't romantic for the two main characters to have STD's even though their strangers who have unprotected sex with each other. *Deep Breath* rant over, always use protection kids.
Overall, it wasn't a particularly great read but it wasn't bad enough to warrant only a one star rating. Would I recommend it? Probably not, there are other biker romances that come to mind first before I'd recommend this to anyone. Will I be carrying on the series? I'm going to say no.
“My specialty? Non-lethal tactics designed to disarm an armed assailant.” (Kindle Locations 60-61).
Hope is on the search for her sister, Faith, who vanished almost without a trace two years ago. With her military training and her current job occupation as a person who trains others to disarm an armed assailant in a non-lethal manner, along with her take no BS attitude, Hope has the best chance out of anyone of finding her sister. The trail leads Hope to Cutter’s MC’s den, a bar on the coast, but Cutter and his crew won’t crack. Cutter can’t just tell Hope what she wants because he has his MC to look after the information she needs could land them in a world of trouble. Cutter, however, can’t just drop Hope because she’s the only woman in a long time, ever since Lil’ Bit, who can keep up with him and give him a run for his money.
Downey knows how to write romance. She knows how to build up the tension until the breaking point and then giving us the goods. There seemed to be a lot more romantic scenes, i.e. sex scenes than in the SHMC romance, but I could be mistaken.
The story Downey builds in Cutter’s Hope is similar to and very different from her Sacred Hearts MC series. There are bikers and tough guys in both. There’s a bad situation in both. There’s someone who needs help in both. Cutter’s Hope, however, contains the toughest female in the SHMC and the Kracken MC club and she is amazing to watch. She is tough and violent like the MC men and can hold her own (and does) while still displaying a wide range of emotions and admitting to needing help when she’s at the end of her tether. Cutter is a character who also comes into his own in this series. We were only given a glimpse of him in the SHMC books and now he gets his own book to make us swoon.
I wish there was more finesse in the grammar, the writing style and sentence flow is not as sophisticated as the plot and characters and story. I absolutely love the way AJ can pull me in and make me love the story and the characters, but I had to re-read multiple sentences to understand what she was trying to say at times.
Soul shattering greatness is what A.J has produced. I was so excited when I saw this book out as I have long awaited Cutters story. I was also terrified that whatever path Cutter went on he wouldn't find the happy I had hoped for him, but as always A.J. Has hit one out of the park. You never know what is going to happen, you can't predict in three chapters what the end is going to be, and you feel truly connected with the characters at every page turn. I hope for more!!!
I have been waiting for this book for ages!!! Ever since I read the sacred hearts MC series, I have had a love for this authors writing. Cutter's hope was just amazing!!! I read the whole book in 3 hours I couldn't put it down!! I literally can not wait for merlin's faith to come out!!
This is an amazing journey of one sister Hope trying to follow leads to find her wayward missing sister Faith. Faith is a diamond in the ruff, she loves to party, but has worked hard to pay her way to college. Trying to make money stretch has found a roommate outside of the dorms, which turns out to be the worst mistake of her life. She turns up missing setting up turns of events leading Hope down the road of a two year journey of searching for her in hopes of a rescue. Hope doesn’t know for sure what’s happened to her sister, but she knows it isn’t good. Hope raised her two sisters Faith and Charity after her mother’s death leaving her sister/mother of the two young girls. To Hope, this means she’s the only one who will put Faith above any other case, or job. Her sisters are after all hers. Her leads land her in Florida and right in the lap of Cutter. President of the Kraken MC.
Cutter recently had to let the woman he loved go, he watched her walk away into the arms of the man she truly loved. Leaving him broken hearted, not wanting to travel that road again. That is until Hope storms her way into his office demanding he look at a photo of the last woman to see her sister before her disappearance. He recognizes the woman of course, but won’t give Hope that answer. Instead he lies. But as the Prez he has a club to protect, and protect them above everything else he will.
This journey will lead them to the path of not only searching for Faith, but learning to love, trust and sharing, sharing a family with each other. This is a wonderfully written novel by AJ Downey, it is full of excitement, twist and turns and an HEA unlike any you would expect. I am counting down the days till the next book is released.
Hope is going to do everything she can to find her missing sister, Faith. Even if that means walking into the lion's den and meeting Cutter. Cutter is the only lead she has right now, and he won't share what he knows. However, he can't stay away from her and as things with his club get complicated it pushes him and Hope together more.
This book had a very interesting plot line. That was the best part about the whole book, the fact that Hope was a bad ass and would do everything she could to find her sister made her a very likable character.
The downside to this book was it felt like certain things weren't really explained very much. And I hated what happened towards the end with the other woman that Cutter loved. That drove me nuts, and really was kind of pointless to this story. Because of this it made me dislike the book somewhat.
Other than that I liked the book. The characters were interesting, and the writing was pretty good. I really loved Hope the most though. She was a great character, and I want to see more of her in other books as well.
Cutter was first introduced in the Sacred Hearts MC series. When we last heard of him, he was left behind in the dust of Reaver's and Hayden's reunion. While you know him and Hayden were a dead end road even before the "resurrection" of Reaver, you can't help but feel sorry for what he has to give up.
Reading Cutter's Hope, we get more insight to the wonderful man Cutter truly is. Yes, he is the head of an MC. Yes, he has his violent moments. And yes, he, too, does have feelings and they revolve around Hope. Sassy, strong-minded, determined Hope was just the woman to "handle" Cutter. And when she has weak moments, Cutter was there to be her pillar of strength. The dynamics in their relationship just work well.
The sub characters... well, I just have to say I can't wait to read Nothing.. but alas, his is the third book. But that's not to say, I am not looking forward to Marlin's book.
As always AJ Downey, I enjoyed your book and look foward to the next one anxiously! You rock!!
After reading the Sacred Hearts MC series by this author, I knew I had to read more. I found that this first story in the Virtues series was next on the reading list, so picked up the whole set. I started, thinking I'd read just a little at lunch each day. It ended up grabbing me by the heartstrings and dragging me along for one of the best rides I've ever had. I couldn't put this book down, and finished it in two days. I highly recommend you read the SHMC series first, but you won't be disappointed when you pick this one up. Definitely worth more than five stars.
I couldn't put this book down. Excellent story, the characters made you want to fist pump their "baddassary", laugh, and cry. Super sexy (H) and Ass kicking (h). Many twists and turns. The author does an excellent job at bring the story to life and makes the characters real.
This was SUCH a fabulous story! Hope is a strong, kick ass woman on a mission to find her sister. Cutter is a strong and tender-hearted man (shhh, don't tell him I said that) that knows right away that Hope is the woman for him. Together they are explosive, in a great way!
The cast of loyal and supportive friends just rounds out the characters perfectly. The storyline was great and kept my interest all the way though! (I'm not much of an MC reader, but this series is going to be a favorite if the other stories are just as good!) I wish the rest of the series was out, but I guess I'll just have to listen to it again when they are released. Oh darn!
The narrators are both new to audiobooks (not voice acting though) and they BLEW ME AWAY! They both gave outstanding performances, not just read the story. I wasn't too sure in the beginning because it started out with Tammy Thomas reading really slowly. I usually listen at normal speed, but I had to bump it to 1.25x, which is a lot for me! I was afraid it would make the other narrator's chapters too fast, but it worked out perfectly. Within 3 chapters, I felt like Tammy had nailed Hope's character Tammy perfectly. Bob Carter has a *fabulous voice* that I knew instantly I was going to love. And OMFG the way he sighs and puts guttural sounds into the dialogue really brings it to life! I reached out to him to find out if he had more audiobooks lined up and he's finishing up "Her Thin Red Lifeline" also by A.J. Downey. I can't wait!!
I'll be looking for more from the author and both narrators! AJ Downey was also a new-to-me author, and I'm glad to add her to my favorites! I didn't realize this was a spin-off series from The Sacred Hearts MC series, so now I've got to go back and read that! (I could tell there was a backstory I was missing, but I don't feel like I missed anything by not having read the other series.)
If you are looking for a great audiobook, this one is definitely worth the credit!!
I received a review copy of the audiobook from the author (who was unknown to me at the time) in exchange for an honest review. I'm SO happy she did, too! It's my pleasure to write this review and share my recommendation for Cutter's Hope with others in my book groups.
Cutter’s Hope The Virtues, Book I By: A.J. Downey Narrated by: Bob Carter, Tammy Thomas
Wow, I loved everything about this book, from A.J. Downey’s wonderful writing style to the story and characters she created. The book grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it all the way to the end. It is the type of book you can’t put down because you need to know what happens next. The characters are realistic and easy to relate to, I adored the two leads, Hope and Cutter. Hope Elizabeth Andrews is fierce, a badass who does not stand down to anyone even badass bikers. She has been search for her sister who disappeared. A lead brings her to a bar in Florida and an MC, she questing them about Faith’s roommate, Tonya, she may have info on her whereabouts. When she starts asking questions that may cause problems for Cutter and the rest of the members of the Krakens MC. Cutter met his match in Hope, actually the whole club did, took them a while to learn to trust her but once they did she not only earned their trust but their respect too. I loved how everything played out in this book, from Cutter and Hope’s romance to challenges she faced hunting down her sister. The book is brilliantly plotted and there is never a dull moment, there is plenty of drama, heartfelt emotions, some angst, some mystery, thrilling and suspenseful moments and some hot loving. A.J. Downey, thank you for this awesome story, loved the characters, the club dynamic and the camaraderie amongst the members.
I listened to the Audible edition, Bob Carter and Tammy Thomas are terrific narrators and voice artists. They do an amazing job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving each their own voice and personality, as well as heart and attitude. They capture and project the characters emotions into their performance. Bob Carter’s take on Cutter was perfection, he sounded as I pictured him to. It took me a little while to get used to Tammy’s Hope but she grew on me after a while. These two are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the awesome listen🎧
I received an audiobook copy of Cutter's Hope in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I have been so excited to start this book - I really loved the Sacred Hearts MC series and I've been hearing nothing but amazing things about The Virtues series. Our main character, Hope made me so happy! I LOVE when we see heroines who stand up and don't let men walk all over them. Hope is determined to find her sister as she went missing. I truly had a hard time putting this audiobook down, they NAILED the narration down TO THE FREAKING SIGHING!!! YES! Seriously, such an amazing audiobook. If you are able to snag the audiobook, I HIGHLY recommend! Also, I recommend reading Sacred Hearts MC first.
