Cambridge Literature is a series of literary texts edited for study by students aged 14–18 in English-speaking classrooms. It will include novels, poetry, short stories, essays, travel-writing and other non-fiction. The series will be extensive and open-ended and will provide school students with a range of edited texts taken from a wide geographical spread. It will feature writing in English from various genres and differing times. These two plays by Caryl Churchill are edited by Lib Taylor of the University of Reading.

About the author

Caryl Churchill (born 3 September 1938) is an English dramatist known for her use of non-naturalistic techniques and feminist themes, dramatisation of the abuses of power, and exploration of sexual politics.[1] She is acknowledged as a major playwright in the English language and one of world theatre's most influential writers.

Her early work developed Bertolt Brecht's modernist dramatic and theatrical techniques of 'Epic theatre' to explore issues of gender and sexuality. From A Mouthful of Birds (1986) onwards, she began to experiment with forms of dance-theatre, incorporating techniques developed from the performance tradition initiated by Antonin Artaud with his 'Theatre of Cruelty'. This move away from a clear Fabel dramaturgy towards increasingly fragmented and surrealistic narratives characterises her work as postmodernist.

چرچیل در این اثر مانند یک بوکسور چابک خروس وزن ضربه های پی در پی و سریعی را بر پیکره ی خیریه ها در کشورهای پیشرفته وارد میسازد؛ این سرعت به علت حذف کردن پرده است و در آن تنها صحنه ها پشت هم می آیند و میروند. نمایش نامه کاملا سیاسیِ چرچیل با اینکه در ظاهر از خیریه ها و کارکرد آنها انتقاد میکند ولی در واقع سابقه ی استعماری کشورهای پیشرفته را نشانه رفته است و علل فقر و هر حادثه ای را در جهان ناشی از عملکر آنها میداند به طوری که در دیالوگ ما بین سلبی و شهردار شهر مصیبت زده سلبی نهایتا اعتراف می کند که: "باشه، بلاهای طبیعی هم سیاسی اند"
طنز دلنشین و ضرباهنگ تند نمایش از نقاط قوت آن هستند ولی نگاه چپ و اینکه نمایش برای تلویزیون نوشته شده نه اجرای صحنه‌ای ممکن است کمی آزار دهنده باشد

نمایشنامه ای تلویزیونی که با نگاهی مارکسیستی به بیهودگی انجمن های خیریه در کشورهای توسعه یافته اشاره میکنه . در واقع مرکز نمایش بر شکلی از انتقاد از استعمار گرانی که از درآمد استعمار خود به استعمار شده ها کمک میکنند استوار است .

نمایشنامه‌ی اپیزودیک "لطیفه‌ی پس از شام" چنان که خود اشاره می‌کند از پی متنی نوشته شده به همین نام، کتابی که به سخنرانی‌های بعد از شام آدم‌های بزرگ – شما بخوانید کله گنده‌ها- می‌پردازد. آقایان و خانم‌هایی در لباس‌های شیک مجلسی که با قاشق بر جام‌های شراب‌شان می‌زنند تا از سر شکم سیری همگان را به لطیفه یا داستانی مفرح دعوت کنند. نمایشنامه لطیفه‌ی پس ازشام کنایه‌ای‌ست بر پوچی مضحک این تصویر در مقابل فلاکت، گرسنگی ، فقر و حس نوع دوستی در جهان معاصر: کنایه‌ای به شکم‌های برآمده در مقابل شکم‌‌های گرسنه! این تضاد در ساختمان اثر خود را به شکل تکنیکال عرضه می‌کند. آیرونی یا تضاد و بالطبع طنز عنصر مسلط اثر و همچنین نیروی محرکه‌ی تمامی صحنه‌ها، موتیف‌‌ها و حتی شخصیت‌هاست. و از طریق همین عنصر فرمال یعنی آیرونی، سه مفهوم کرد و کار نهادهای خیریه‌ که در نمایشنامه بیشتر ازاینکه حافظ امر خیر باشد تامین کننده‌ی منافع صاحبان قدرت هستند، با سیاست که در دست‌ سرمایه‌داران به سیاست بازی تبدیل شده و فقر که معلول طبیعی آن دو دیگری است، به هم گره خورده و مورد مداقه قرار می‌گیرد.
