Hexus Journal. Issue 1: The New Black

Rate this book
Hexus is a journal placed somewhere between the boundaries of experimental fiction and art writing, illustration and fine art, whist maintaining a focus firmly on horror—positioning itself somewhere between Hammer Horror schlock and The Shock of the New, it’s aim is to offer a contemporary perspective on a much-maligned genre.

The first issue, The New Black, dwells on (and in) the darkness of dissolution—of body, mind, and spirit. Within its pages you’ll find writing and artwork from an international and highly acclaimed line up, all dealing in their own way with the loss of self—be it through mental deliquescence, miasmatic bleeding out, the ever-narrowing strictures of power, the price of fame, spectral malevolence, Dadaistic tumbles to the void, or good old-fashioned violence.

Featuring writing from Michael Cisco, Brian Evenson, M Kitchell, Thogdin Ripley, Gary J Shipley, and Philippa Snow, and artwork from Dawn Arsenaux, Fran Cutler, and Angela Deane.

Numbered edition of 200.

“Hexus Issue 1: The New Black”, describes itself as a Journal not as a magazine. As such, the journal is not what I would consider a horror publication. The collection does contain "Horror" but I believe it is much more than that. This issue is filled with dread, and through a variety of contents it's contents will leave you unable to rest easy at night.

The publishers have been able to construct the contents of this Journal with such a uniqueness as to cause dread and uneasiness to take the spotlight instead of traditional horror. Through the use of words and pictures the unease of the reader grows as you progress trough the pages of this offering which consists of the following:

04 - Thogdin Ripley – “The Party With Your Name”
08 – Michael Cisco – “Coptic Light”
25 – Fran Cutler – Four Faces
30 – Gary J Shipley – “This Is Slime”
32 - Gary J Shipley – “Reptile Christ”
34 - Gary J Shipley – “It Erases The Sky”
36 - Gary J Shipley – “Cubicle Germ Stain”
39 – Dawn Arsenaux – Four Collages
44 – Brian Eversob – “Cardboard”
66 - Michael Cisco – “The Watchful Eyes Of Cops”
68 – Philippa Snow – “Begat”
70 - Philippa Snow – “The Lindsay Lohan Sex-Tape”
75 – Angela Deane – Ghost Photographs
84 – M. Kitchell “Rope Trick”

Editors: Thogdin Ripley, Philippa Snow
Designer: Christopher Gray

Loved the design, and Brian Evenson and Mike Kitchell's pieces.

I was amused to note that the "dyslexic" rendering of naloxone as naxalone is actually quite common.
