A fun, humorous cozy mystery - with ghosts! Laurel Bay is conducting a funeral when someone is strangled in the bathroom. Now that there have been two deaths in the funeral home, business is as dead as a doornail. As Laurel sifts through the clues, she is faced with too many suspects, a wisecracking ghost, and a woman journalist who appears to be after more than Basil’s files. Laurel thought that inheriting the funeral home was an opportunity to die for, but it seems to be quite an undertaking.

Really enjoyed this book number 2 in the series. I may have bopped Mom in the nose a time or 2 as she is a bit pushy to say mildly, lol. Imagine running a funeral home and being able to see ghosts, whew. A must to solve the most recent murder that takes place in the funeral home or there will be more bad publicity. Can't wait to get book 3 to find out how the romance goes!
When her father dies, Laurel was hurt and confused. When she finds out that she has inherited the family business, she wasn't sure she wanted it. She is now the proud owner of "witch woods" funeral home. And on top of that she has her very religious mother to deal with always telling everyone what a sinner Laurel was. If she didn't have her best friend Tara around, who would she chat with about her big crush on Basil, her business accountant. And if holding a funeral service for a mob boss wasn't bad enough, the musician who was hired to play music there, is found murdered! Poor Laurel, so much to deal with trying to keep her funeral business going after customers begin to cancel future services. What is she going to do? Figure out who the murderer is naturally...and that's where the secrets come out as she gets closer. I really enjoyed this book because the main character is strong and not afraid to be herself. And when she finds out Basils secret, it just makes her more confident. Good story with funny ghosts, including old man Ernie, the funeral homes resident ghost !
When the singer Laurel hires for a funeral is murdered at the funeral home. Bad publicity from the press once again threatens to shut down drives business elsewhere. It's up to Laurel to find the murderer to save her business.
Meanwhile her mother is still trying to run the business and Laurel's life. Laurel has just about had enough of her mother's piousness.
This is another fun story from Morgana Best. But she had brought in another line of conflict for Laurel during the story, and made no other references to it. I will assume that this issue will be addressed in another story, but with no more mentions of the possible legal problems from a rival funeral home. It left the story feeling incomplete, at least for me.
This is the second book of the funeral home series and I loved it! Morgana Best has definitely made it to my favorite authors category. Laurel is doing her best to run her father's funeral home since he passed away. It's not easy with an overbearing mother who thinks SHE can run the funeral home and attempt to boss Laurel around. Then there's the resident ghost that only Laurel can see. To top that off, there has been another murder in the funeral home. Hopefully Laurel can solve that, build the business back up and not lose her mind. This is a really fun book. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!
Nothing to Ghost About by Morgana Best. This is book 2 in the series
There has been two murders at Witch Woods Funeral Home and business has been canceled because of newspaper articles and threats made by an abusive competitor. That's why Laurel decides that she has to solve the murder.
This has been a wonderful story written by Morgana Best. Love the characters: sweetheart Basil and freeky mum, Thelma; even poor John Jones! This is a book you have to read! Now I need to look for book 3!
The second installment of the Funny Cozy Mystery Series finds Laurel and Thelma going toe to toe over Church, Basil Sandlewood and everything else that Thelma can take offense over. A short list of murder suspects means Laurel has to make sure she points the police toward the right one.
Laurel tries to keep her family's funeral home going while a crazy cast of characters interrupts her life! Her mum is a nightmare! And she keeps trying to set Laurel up with her church friends!
This is a fun read! The characters are hilarious! I binge read this series and really enjoyed it and hope there are more to come! It is about a woman, Laurel, who inherits her dad funeral home much to her mother's dismay! Her mother expected to inherit it! The unfortunate side, Laurel can see ghosts! The worse part, moving back with her mother! Her mother is super religious and refuses to believe in Laurels' ability! If you are easily offended, read at your own risk!
I’d give it 2.5 ⭐️ if that were possible. It was definitely an improvement on the last one, and the main character is starting to stand up to her mother, and with the ending now I’m interested enough to read the next one.
I laugh each time Ernie shows up. LOL. Can't wait to read more. Hope to read more about Basil and less about Ian. His Ian and her mom have a thing going on?
I fell in love with this author's writing as soon as I started the first book in this series.
Laurel Bay is getting used to being the owner of her (dead) father's funeral home. She is also adjusting to being able to see and talk to ghosts. Neither of these is a problem for Laurel. The problem is her mother. Nothing Laurel does is right in her mother's eyes. There is a lot of emotional and mental abuse given out by Laurel's mother towards her daughter.
Unfortunately, the funeral home itself seems to be a magnet for dead bodies who appear to Laurel for help in finding who killed them. (In case you don't know: this is not a good thing for the funeral home itself and its finances.) Now Laurel has to deal with how to make the funeral home viable again, her mother, and another ghost. Oh and then there is the developing sort of romantic relationship that is going on between Laurel and Basil (her accountant). :)
The first two books in this series are hilarious! (Though there are times when I would like Laurel to tell her mother a few home truths!) The mother is bats**t crazy and a religious fanatic taken well beyond just being a religious fanatic. (Read the book and you will see what I mean). Still, there are a lot of chapters that made me laugh out loud.
The author has a knack for giving characters their own personalities and quirks. The plots are well-written and flow along in a natural course. The ghosts have their own stories beyond their murder which gives the reader of sense that they were real people before their murder. The romance between Laurel and Basil is taken slow which I like as a little emotional turmoil and wondering should ensure that the partnership will last.
Book two in the series was another fun look at an overly religious mom who can't resist butting into her daughter's business 100% of the time. Oh and there was another murder at the funeral of a big time mobster. This time it was a singer hired to perform at the funeral and no obvious connection to the mobster or anyone else involved. While Laurel tried to find out who murdered the singer, he was less than helpful, and didn't even manage to maintain much of a presence around Laurel. I was a bit disappointed since it seems he could have tried to be a little more appreciative of her help!
Some things never change in Laurel's world. She is still bucking her mother and her friends at every turn. She is still being pursued by her mother's choice of suitor from her church. And she still lights up when her accountant, Basil, is around. It takes another life threatening occurrence for Basil to finally admit his concerns and his interest in Laurel. And glory be! Laurel is talking about moving out of her mother's house finally!
This book seemed to go by faster than the first one. Perhaps it was because I knew most of the main characters. Whatever the reason, it was a delightful read and I am now turning to book three in the series. You definitely want to read these books in order, even though each mystery is solved within the book. But getting to know the characters gradually makes you appreciate them more, and adds to the humor of the stories.
I love this series! This has everything you want all rolled up into one great book! Laurel inherited her father's funeral business after he passed and has been trying to make it work even though her Mom likes to stir up trouble. When a big time mob boss gets killed and Laurel is the funeral director his family chooses she is thrilled. The extra money is really needed and hopefully this will give her business a boost! Things don't turn out well when the body of the singer Laurel hired turns up dead in the casket along with the mob boss! If Laurel doesn't find out quick who killed them both her business will be the next thing she buries! With a crazy lot if characters including her overly zealous religious Mom who swears you will burn in hell if you don't go to her church, Ian her mother's friend who has issues of his own, John who her Mother insist on trying to fix Laurel up with and who swears she just needs guidance from a man, Ernie the ghost who likes to scare you and tell bad jokes, and Basil the accountant whose is sexy and mysterious! I can't wait to read the next book in this series to find out what this cast of characters is going to get into next! I highly recommend this book!
Nothing to Ghost About is the second book in Morgana Best's Witch Woods Funeral Home Mystery series. We find funeral home owner, and ghost whisperer, Laurel Bay officiating at a funeral of a known crime figure struck down in a hit and run accident. But it is no accident when the hired funeral singer is found strangled in the restroom
With two murders at Witch Woods Funeral Home in the short time Laurel has been the proprietor, business is at a standstill. There have been scathing newspaper articles, threats by a competitor, and moves made on the object of Laurel's interest, her accountant Basil Sandalwood, by one of the reporters.
And of course, there is the continual friction between Laurel and her holier-than-thou mother, Thelma, and her over-zealous cohorts, Ian and John Jones.
Laurel decides the only way to help her business is to solve the murder as quickly as possible, putting herself in harms way. But when the crime is solved, how will Laurel solve her other problems?
Another tale told with humor, mysticism, and clues cleverly strung along as you, too, seek the perpetrators. I have enjoyed the Morgana Best's stories, great little islands of escape. I recommend this book.
Creative and fun, very enjoyable to read. Ms Best always delivers! I love getting to know the characters and I've always had a rather morbid sense of humor and curiosity about the running of a funeral home. Thank you Ms Best, once again!
This is a great book; this is the second book in the Ghost Cozy Mystery series by Morgana Best. This book can be read as a standalone, but once you read one you will want to go back and read the first book. Laurel Bay can’t catch a break with her medaling mother who takes her religion too far. She is finally getting things picked up at the funeral home that her father left her when someone is found strangled in the bathroom during a funeral. Now that there has been another murder all of her clients are canceling the funerals and going with another funeral home. She needs to find the killer before she loses everything. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this great series! A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Witch Woods Mysteries Book 2. Another fun read in this promising series. The murder mystery is an important part of the book, it a cozy mystery after all, but this series is also about character development. The writing is well paced and clever. I like Laurel Bay and I want her to be successful. I like her friends. Laurel is the owner of a funeral home in Witch Woods, a small town in Australia. Laurel can also see and hear ghosts...not always a plus for the operator of a funeral home. There is a lot of humor as Laurel goes on a quest to solve the murder of a furneral singer. The antagonist in the book is Laurel's mother who isn't a character one is supposed to like but I admit I find her repugnant. I'm hoping Book 3 has less of this awful woman and much more Laurel.
Ok I really love how Laurel stands up to her highly religious Mother it is just hilarious. Laurel is back in book 2 with more hilarious action owning a funeral home can be a very dangerous business dead bodies and murders everywhere lol. The sexy accountant Basil is back again with his judgemental attitude I'm not sure if I like him or not so for now I'm reserving my opinion on him even if Laurel likes him. This cozy has it all lots of laughs, action a great murder mystery what more can you ask for.
Nothing to Ghost About continues the story of Laurel, her friends, her funeral home, her mother, and murder. Although it is the second book in the Witch Woods Funeral Home series, there is enough information in the beginning that it can stand alone - for a short time. After reading it, you should look for Books 1 and 3! Laurel's mother carries a big Book - thank goodness. Once I started reading, I had to finish the book in one sitting. I enjoy Morgana's writing style and plan to read some of her other series.
Too bad talking to ghosts is not admissible evidence. One of the best cozy mystery series around. The sleuthing is excellent, the characters certainly are, and the humor is awesome. "She had this raucous laugh like a thousand kookaburras on steroids." Or the word picture of the unsuspecting woman who tried to serve cupcakes with bacon laden frosting to the vegetarian heroine. If you need some good laughs with your sleuthing, here is a book for you!
I really enjoyed this book, and I did laugh out loud several times. Poor Laurel, dealing with murderers is definitely better than dealing with her crackpot mother and her zealot friends. I love this series!
I would not recommend the book, which just seems to be an after thought to book one. It seemed to go in circles until the end and just lacked the depth to be interesting!
