Candelaria Siobhan Masuko Bagani is Poseidon Station's youngest crew member - and eleventh-generation master gardener. Her job will be to carefully hand propagate the seeds that Monsanto crippled, helping plants to do what they can't do for themselves. So that the people of Poseidon can eat. So they can breathe.
The dandelion seed is one of three, sent from Earth. Scientific treasure.
And then one day, seed meets girl - and everything changes forever.
Dandelion Kisses is a short story. It's science fiction, and it's life, and it's what happens when a writer's little girl used to have a love affair with a certain yellow weed. :)
Each short glimpse into one person's life from childhood to old age is filled with specific emotions. The science fiction was plausible and a cautionary yet hopeful view of the future.
I enjoyed reading this story that spans the lifetime of a very special, brave girl.
The idea that a company that really exists in the real world combined with climate change made it necessary to colonize an asteroid is scary stuff. Possible outcomes of our fooling around with evolution and Mother Nature.
I absolutely LOVE this author's books! She pulls you in and it seems like you are part of the scenes she writes.
My favorite part is when Ari mentions how she chose great genes with which she would reproduce with. The choice of these words ties in with how the company on Earth messed with genes so that plants could not reproduce without our help. Also makes the point that you should THINK ABOUT the makeup, the DNA, the characteristics you will pass along to your offspring. THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU MAKE BABIES with someone!! Know the father before making a human being that will carry a lot of his traits. Same thing for men. Please consider the DNA you yourself are passing on.
Rhia, the grandchild, has a delightful mix of qualities that are present in her grandparents.
My sister decided to make two children with the father who is severely ADHD and is antisocial. This used to be called sociopath. Both kids suffer with ADHD and poor decision making. Impulse control issues abound. I love them both, but I cannot allow the younger boy over to spend the night with me. He disregards rules and boundaries. He tries to justify his behavior because the rules shouldn't apply to him. It's something I deeply worry about because one day this child will be driving. He will be 18 and I'm afraid I'll be visiting him in prison.
Anyway, those are the thoughts that I had after reading this story. Besides plant gene manipulation and climate change, we should think about what kind of DNA we are passing on to our children.
A love story. Love in so many forms. Familiar love, love for society and duty, love for a little rebellion, love for a man and woman, and love for a little yellow flower. One that I can remember picking bouquets of as a child, loving their bright yellow, sunny, happy disposition. I remember getting irritated at my Mom when she called them weeds. I called them God's flowers. A lovely story.
A sweet little story about the future that might cause you question the choices we make today. Audrey Faye's talent lies in the fact that whether she be writing a full book or a short story, she is always able to create characters that the reader can identify with and root for. This was a nice little treat for my Thanksgiving holiday!!!
I really enjoyed this story.......a lovely glimpse into some of the most important moments of a courageous soul's life. Thank you, Audrey Faye! Can't wait to read what comes next!!!!
Such a lovely tidbit. A pleasant short story read on this Sunday morning filled with imagery and emotion. If you are new to Audrey Faye be sure to try her full length novels.
