Nice and spooky. The beginning was a bit slow but then it picked up. Not too fond of the ending, I guess it would be better if there was a sequel but I don't think there is one.

CNs for spookiness and rather graphic injury description, but it doesn't turn into body horror. There's some ableist language and some unquestioned cultural appropriation which I find irritating. I would have given 4 stars if it wasn't for that, but racism always eats one star.

My rating is actually 3.5/5 stars, but you can't do half stars on here! Also, I've done my best to keep this review spoiler free.

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway (my first ever!), which I was excited about. The synopsis made it seem like a YA horror novel. And it is, but it is so much more than that.

The thing I loved the most about this book is that it has a queer protagonist. Which is fantastic. But even more fantastic is that you don’t know this until about halfway through the book (something like 130 pages in). Because that information isn’t really pertinent to the plot, and you are able to get to know Casey well before that point. The entire novel is told from Casey’s point of view and the reader gets all of Casey’s rambling thoughts and feelings throughout. So if you’re looking for an interesting queer character, I would definitely recommend this book!

The plot is where it fell a little bit flat for me. I don’t think I felt the terror I was actually supposed to. The initial leading up to finding the characters was tense, but not that scary for me. My interest was peaked again once Casey and Lisa found the creatures. However, the end of the novel, felt rushed to me. I thought the creatures' reveal/admission at the end was not well-developed or particularly interesting. I would have preferred if the story ended with Casey and Lisa and Jason escaping.

However, Casey’s unique voice (which I was actually annoyed by at first) carried the novel. The story kept me intrigued enough to keep reading, I just wish I would have felt a little bit more of the horror I was expecting.
