I was asked by the author to review this book. First off...Werewolves, Faeries, and Hamlet...Oh my? Weird, but it works.
The story starts off with Felken finding he killed a human girl from his german village. We are fed information regarding "his world", AKA the werewolves, and his current situation with his Uncle. Right away you can see the Hamlet-esque situation.
And then along comes Rue. Oh Rue. I won't spoil anything, but for a quiet character, I really liked her. We gain her personality through actions, instead of words. Felken often has to tell her, "stealing is wrong!" but she keeps doing it without a care. I never thought I would see werewolves and Faeries in the same plot, lol. I love how their relationship grows from curiosity, to friendship, and then love, instead of the YA "Insta-love" most character fall victim to.
Felken is...Felken. For about half the book he is a very passive character, just going along whatever happens. Eventually he does start to take charge, but honestly his character works because of his cousin, Henri. They contrast well.
Overall, it was a quick read, but good. The writing style is full of details, but simple. I can picture just about everything. Everything was finished up but one detail, which I hope is explained in another book.
