The book consists of Elementary and Pre-intermediate courses with parallel Finnish-English texts. The author maintains learners' motivation with funny stories about real life situations such as meeting people, studying, job searches, working etc. The ALARM method (Approved Learning Automatic Remembering Method) utilize natural human ability to remember words used in texts repeatedly and systematically. Each sentence was composed only with words explained in previous chapters. The second and the following chapters of the Elementary course have only 29 new words each. It was useful to have level appropriate reading and learn some new vocabulary. The stories are a little odd, funny and silly. Not great literature but entertaining enough. Sometimes I felt there were too many new words, but it was generally doable. I wish there were more graded readers for Finnish. The audio is useful. At least one story is actually a revision of my favorite chain mail from the 90s. Is chain mail still a thing?
Today while practicing, I said out loud to myself, “This is just great!” I haven’t studied Finnish since the 1970s. At the conclusion of the primer, so much has returned to me. Kiitokisia paljon Herra Saariselle ja Herra Saarisesta!
